17/08/23 - Update - I now have the final consumer Bigscreen Beyond headset and my review remains the same. Overall, the build quality is better but the glare and small sweet spot remain.

This is partly why I sent the PSVR2 back - super bad sweetspot that was annoying af. I went to Quest Pro and, of course, super clear massive sweet spot.. on and in no messing. Also no face gasket which I no longer want touching my face. So.. until the future Quest Pro remains the best PCVR HMD for me (and I do it wirelessly via WIFI6e on a dedicated raxe300 and with decent built in sound - great controllers that track anywhere and can move around to any room). I know QP isn't perfect but it's about as good as it gets, on balance, for PCVR right now. A sweet spot with no cable needed.

I have and Index I run at 120hz. My primary concern with this unit is the limit of 90hz refresh. Did you find this impacted your enjoyment of the headset at all? It would seem "no", but I have to ask...

It’s appointed but not always shared. I’ve used the Quest Pro from day 1 and it’s till the most comfortable headset I’ve used out of at least 8 others. I can play for hours and have none of the forehead pressure people complain about. Just goes to show how individual VR is.

Ya imo the most annoying thing about headsets is the size. If you can reduce the size significantly while not having the drawbacks of smaller sweet spot etc. then you have a great product. The only other thing i would like is to have accurate tracking without bay stations because those are pricey.

It's so close but I'll keep waiting like I have been for the last few years. If they ever release a full 2.0 that fixes the issues and increases the FoV, I'll almost definitely buy it. I am getting really tired of waiting tho, so I plan on just buying a Quest 3 when it comes out (or Quest 2/ Pico 4) to bridge the gap, if it seems like Valve isn't going to be releasing something within a year of the Q3 release.

I can see other big companies like meta bringing out smaller size headsets in the future, this one looks more like the headsets in ready player one, hopefully they can tweak the few flaws for the future models and also the price range comes down in the near future, apart from that I see these kind of smaller headsets being the norm going forward and the next step in vr evolution, thanks Mike for the video once again

This is the closest call I've had on whether to buy a headset in a while. I'm definitely getting a Quest 3. I still like PCVR on my Quest 2 but primarily play native apps like Supernatural. If Supernatural came out for PCVR then it would be a no brainer I would buy this right away because this seems like it would be perfect for that app. After thinking about it I passed on PSVR2 (even though I have a PS5) and the Vision Pro. Glare doesn't bother me so that's not an issue and I would like to use this for watching movies and videos, among other things, if I get it. I have an HTC Vive so I have the original first generation base stations and the old but still pretty decent VIve controllers. What to do?

I'm visually impaired and brightness is a huge deal for me.

For me the problem with those headset is to have a complex external detectors installation, so you can only use it in one place. I like playing sometimes in living room, but if my wife or kids are there, i can use my quest anywhere else, in bedroom, garage or even in the garden ! Hopefully, Quest 5 or 6 will have this size 😁😁

That's why VR has diverged and must diverge into two subcategories, portable and tethered. The small form factor achieved here is plainly possible because most processing and sensors are not inside the headset. This is a fundamental divergence to two VR categories so IMO you shouldn't expect the perks of portable VR in a dedicated tethered product.

I can't remember which was announced first, the Nofio wireless add-on for the Index or this but I decided to go for the Nofio. If someone gets this working with the Nofio I might up grade but eh, I'd rather wait for the Deckard. It might never come out, ever, but I'll wait for it. I'll give it a few more years and if it isn't out by then I'll buy the Bigscreen 2. I didn't think I'd want eye/face tracking but I know someone in VRChat with the Quest Pro and eye/face tracking and holy crap, now I want it. For social VR and controlling the interface. And to squeeze every frame out of my graphics card with foveated rendering.

Hey! Thanks a lot for the video, it was really great.👍 Could you please give me advice? I think you're the only one who has enough knowledge in this area to answer my question. I'm mostly looking for a headset to watch movies and shows. I have a good 65" hdr oled tv but want to get really cinema and 3d effects with good picture(I don't have an appropriate wall for a video projector). My priority is not comfort but to get the most enjoyable and realistic picture from watching movies. I'm ready to buy Pimax Crystal but is it the best choice in comparison with Bigscreen Beyond or maybe there is a better choice? I mean which one can give the best cinematic experience? I've read that Pimax Crystal has HDR and Bigscreen you said has a "glare" issue during scenes with high contrast... Or maybe it's impossible for now to get better cinematic experience from a VR headset than from a good 65" hdr oled tv set? What do you think?

The glare is the only thing scaring me from the headset. It's still the best contender for my next headset currently, but man I don't want to deal with that. I'm really invested in the SteamVR ecosystem, and my main game is VRChat. I need a headset that doesn't need OVR space calibrator for my vive pucks so the Quest 3 is out of the question. I guess I will have to wait another 5 months to see what 2024 has to offer. My 2016 HTC Vive is really dated, and I want to have more clarity. I have the whole system. 3 OG Vive trackers 1.0 and 2 OG 1.0 Vive base stations and the OG 2016 Vive wands. Everything works fine. However, I think it is time for a hardware refresh. What headset should I go with. my wish list is PCVR, Passthrough and Wireless with full body tracking. I was looking at Quest 3. I was also looking at Bigscreen of course. Lastly, the Vive XR Elite. If you have any proper recommendations. Let me know. Budget is not an issue.

I would like your opinion on something - I'm thinking of pre ordering a Bigscreen Beyond but not completely sure yet. Currently, all I have related to VR is a Quest 2, and I don't own any steam VR games or basestations/controllers. I will have a decent amount of money to spare, but ~$1,500 for a VR setup Is still quite a bit of money. Do you think I should get the beyond or wait for something else - maybe Valves "Deckard" headset? I definitely would like to get into PCVR sometime soon, but I'm just not sure what headset I should go for.
@PikaPilot
@PikaPilot 9 ай бұрын
depends on how much you value that comfort. the deckard will be a big, heavy HMD like everyone else's in comparison to the bigscreen beyond. also, don't forget that buying into SteamVR also means you're buying the best consumer tracking setup money can buy right now. if you want full body tracking, steamvr trackers like vive and tundra are much better than IMU trackers like slimes The beyond's best selling point is the < 200g weight while packing OLED panels. If you spend time with people in VR a lot, or if you play sims for a long time, then IMO you'll find that the bigscreen is worth it. finally, we have no idea when the deckard is coming. The bigscreen should be able to fulfill orders made now before the end of next year

After using a headset that practically eliminates the sweet spot issue (quest pro 2) I could never go back to having to deal with it. It's a shame to hear the beyond has such a small sweet spot given it also uses pancakes lenses, and it's ultimately a deal breaker for me, unfortunately.

I do want one but I realize now watching you do the face scan how many damn hurdles I have. Not only do I not own any apple products (I could get access) I have range of motion issues and cannot turn my head. One reason I avoid phones with face unlock is I can't onboard them at all. I may be screwed here.

It would be easier to just send them a clay face mold than to waste 1k+ on an apple product. They could just send a fixed face cushion to skip the trouble, or a third party could make a leather+foam cushion so we don't have to worry about it.

I really like the small design and this is definitely a huge step towards VR glasses. But the resolution downgrade in 90Hz mode (what's the actual reason beyond this?), the lack of wireless and the need for bases and index controllers is a big no for me. I want to be able to play my PCVR games from anywhere.
@ChristesII
@ChristesII 9 ай бұрын
The resolution reduction at 90hz is because of bandwidth limitation over the cable. It's like how wireless headsets have to compress the video, but at a much less significant scale.
@MuffinTastic
@MuffinTastic 9 ай бұрын
@@ChristesII According to NDA documents (see SadlyItsBradley's channel), the bandwidth limitation is actually in the OLED screens and display controllers themselves, not the cable. This is why you see headsets with higher resolutions running at 90hz. The DSC (display stream compression) stuff they talked about is used in both 75hz and 90hz modes. Them bringing DSC up in the first place confused a lot of people...

I have a Quest Pro which has a noticeable difference in the blacks compared to the Quest 2. I feel like most games are made with Quest 2 in mind and try to compensate for that because once you put on a headset with deeper black, it's near impossible to see anything. Then you raise the gamma and it just makes the maps and menus completely bloomed out. A lot of parts in Propagation Hotel were too dark and kind of reminiscent of the same issues Saint and Sinners Chapter 2 had in the dark areas (You mention that the darker areas made it ore intense for you but in my experience it just made it more frustrating. what's the point in playing in VR if you can't SEE in VR). Near impossible to see where you are going. I also find this issue in Phasmophobia. The deeper blacks isnt necessarily a better thing, even though it looks better, in my opinion. Wish maybe VR games had better setting customization to help with this, in a VR world still in the wild west days, trying to figure itself out. I don't know if turning off local dimming on the Quest Pro would help alleviate the contrast issues between brights and darks but then you just reintroduce more glare. I should try switching it off to see the differences...
@JimBob1937
@JimBob1937 6 ай бұрын
In the case of BSB the panels are micro OLED, so the deeper blacks are due to the panel's higher contrast as opposed to a poor gamma curve.
@Admodeus
@Admodeus 5 ай бұрын
I don't think the issue is the headsets themselves, but actually just poor game design. There should be light sources placed around the map to avoid pitch blackness in an area you need to navigate or loot. If you walk into a pitch black room in real life and try to navigate or find something in it, you will have a bad time too. Games that want dark areas should at least give us a powerful and useful torch to see what's directly infront of us. Arizona sunshine 2 was really bad for this.
