Have you missed my previous videos on Marlin 2.0? Check out this playlist for more information: kzbin.info/aero/PL4dGkbjUvBzpvkhay7Hf_fm3ygnvwQErt I'll also post any corrections or updates in this pinned post! - Clairification: Most of my comments about the display were in relation to the Ender 5 Plus which has a touchscreen display. The 12864 LCD on the Ender 3 and Ender 5 should work just fine with the Mini E3 V2.0 without modification. - Correction: The SKR Pro V1.1 does not have onboard EEPROM as shown on my table.

@@kerseyfabs I'm already compiling your version. But the problem is that your version also shows a black screen. Which I find odd since cheetah firmware works fine. Edit: Ok it's not firmware. It's something else. Now I also don't see any screen on Cheetah. And the board is not responding via USB. Odd. Edit2: OMG!!!! Two days of work because of the chinese SD card that was causing problems! Note to self and others. Even though they are only 128MB they are still trash (the ones that come with the board).

Hey. Just to add... I have checked your firmware and it's ok for a start but you really should enable UBL (or make a video about it) as it's not that harder to use and it's way better than BIL leveling. BIL leveling hase some issues with SKR e3 boards. They tend to ignore BIL leveling (I have been testing this for three days straight).

With both the BTT boards there actually is the option of using the stock screen - it's a little more complicated than using a TFT35, but has been done. Certainly for the E3 2.0 it makes it a much cheaper & better option than the Creality board.
@kerseyfabs

I know it's possible but I wasn't sure that support had made it into mainline Marlin. One of the benefits of the upgrade though was getting that stock Marlin text control. I prefer it. I was looking into flashing the stock display though to newer firmware to add functionality in a future video.

Sometimes boards with 512k on board are rated only at 256k due to leaving enough room to update the firmware without writing over existing firmware. That way it always has a backup of the firmware stored. Not sure if this is the case here but I have seen this done a fair bit

What I am finding out a lack of knowledge about how a stepper motor works and how relatively simple changes can augment the performance of s stepper motor. Also how to recognize a good stepper motor from a cheap one. Stepper motor controllers like the Trinamic ones can control de amount of current that flows through the coils of a stepper motor. The Ics use PWM to control the amount of current flowing through the coils. Let's show a simplified equation for 2 different stepper motors, both with the same power in Watts and the same torque. Motor 1: P[W] = I[A] * U[V] = 1A * 12V = 12W If I use a 12V power source and the nominal values for the motor are 1A and 12V the Trinamic IC PWM would operate with a PWM with a duty cycle of 100%. Motor 2: P[W] = I[A] * U[V] = 4A * 3V = 12W If I do operate this stepper motor from the same power supply with a voltage of 12V the PWM will have a duty cycle of 25% to ensure the current value continues to be at a maximum of 4A. Let's apply the numbers to the same equation: P[W] = I[A] * U[V] = 4A * 12V = 48W Now the stepper motor offers 4x the power and so also about 4x the torque. This is such a simple thing to do, as Marlin would just have to set the current value max to the nominal value of the motor. Trinamic even offers the feature to address peak torque needs by allowing for a short period of time to increase the current by 20%. I believe Kersey you should look into this. I find it very bad that I could not find the nominal values of the stepper motors used in my Ender 5 Plus. There should be this information supplied. I even guess that Creality uses the PWM functionality to operate SilentStepSticks with either 12V or 24V

That should only be possible if people decided to bypass the external mosfet and go straight to the board. If you're using the external mosfet that is standard with the printer, there's no way that would happen. Use the external mosfet.

Sorry to hear about your problems. You could be running into some noise on your wiring. This can be worse when heating the hotend or heat bed which pull more current. I'd suggest trying to separate your endstop wiring from your hotend, heat bed, and fan wiring. Just run them separately instead of right next to each other.

All those boards support the Creality Ender 5 Plus / CR10S Pro style TFT touch screen through the TFT port on the SKR boards. I currently have a CR10S Pro Touch Screen wired to a SKR V1.4 Turbo board and it works great! You just have to get the correct pinout for the Creality touch screen and match it up with the SKR TFT port. 5V and Ground are easy. The Touch screen has 2 pairs of TX/RX and you only need 1 pair. So ignore the pair of TX and RX that have a 4 on them. TX4/RX4 on the touchscreen connector will not be used. Also, the RST line on the TFT header is not used / not connected to anything. Literally all you have to do is connect the 5V of the SKR to the 5V pin of the Creality Touchscreen. Ground to Ground. The TX of the SKR connects to the RX2 of the touchscreen. (Notice TX connects to RX in this case) and the RX of the SKR connects to the TX2 of the touchscreen. That's it. You're done. Well, except you also need to use the flag in Marlin: Force10SProDisplay. With that flag enabled, your SKR board can operate your stock display. You also need to make sure that your touchscreen is updated to to run with the matching screen firmware files that go with the particular version of Marlin you are using. TM3D usually has a zip file in their firmware package that you extract to a microsd card that you use to update the touchscreen. Pretty easy process. Copy the files to the card, insert it into the touchscreen microsd slot, power it all on, wait for it to copy the files, power it off, remove the card, and it's updated. Here is a picture of the touchscreen without the pins and without the plastic header blocking the view of the pin names! imgur.com/gallery/rcrRf0u

I have 4 ender 5 plus and they all running at octoprint on there own dedicated raspberry I haven't done anything on the boards besides raising the voltage a little for the extruders because of the skipping. I have a 32bit mks gen 1.0 board with 2208 drivers bought butt the thing is that they all print great! I'm kinda at a point of "don't fix if it ain't broken" I only done the gen 4 double fan ducts and 1 converted to direct drive butt what is the BIG advantage of a new board? I don't think the printers are too loud for me so silent drivers aren't worth it for me.
@kerseyfabs
@kerseyfabs 4 жыл бұрын
Great questions! I'm a big proponent of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it," but many people like to upgrade for reasons such as silence, better stepper drivers, and new features. Just a few notes: The smoother TMC steppers can produce better prints. In side-by-side comparisons, you can see small improvements. The new boards have new features which I discussed in part 1 of this series. The new boards have more power for new features of for printing faster. If none of these issues are as important to you as a known stable printing environment, leave it alone. If you want to try it out, go for it. If you're careful, you can always switch back.

I'm stuck now as I modified my ender 5 plus and planned on using your videos and firmware, only now it turns out that you can't compile marlin 2.0.6 with current version of platformio... So I'm stuck with a bricked printer and can't for the life of me figure out how to do the firmware myself

You have to install the correct firmware on the board so it knows which printer it's in.

does it work with the normal ender 5? (the smaller "vanilla" one)

Yes. The Mini E3 V1.2 and V2.0 will work as a drop-in replacement. The SKR V1.4 will require an adapter of some sort.

Just FYI, Big Tree Tech support says that their boards are not compatible with the Ender 5 Plus. I bought the BTT SKR v1.4 Turbo (2209 stepper drivers) and their TFT50 touch screen. After following their install instructions the screen had a rolling distortion on it (horizontal line going top to bottom). I was able to activate stepper motors and heat the bed, but after a few minutes of use the screen starts flashing to a blank white screen and stops talking to the printer. Restarting the printer starts this loop all over again. When I sent video of this to BTT, they sent back a response that their products are not compatible with the Ender 5 Plus, only the Ender 5 Pro. Since you and a number of other KZbinrs are using the Turbo boards on the Ender 5 Plus, this makes no sense, but I thought people should know they aren't very helpful. I'd also love it if you know a fix for this glitch. 🙂

I talked to BTT about the Ender 5 Plus not being supported last night since I have heard it at least twice now. She told me she would look into it and try to get it fixed. As for the screen issue, either something is off with your connections or something is off with your display. Have you verified that both Marlin and Touch mode are working correctly?

@@kerseyfabs I appreciate you looking into this: I think the last email I got from them was provoked by you contacting them. They are telling me now that the reason the motherboard isn't compatible with the Ender 5 Plus is that the holes don't line up ("the motherboard holes are different, so the printer cannot be installed"). Makes no sense since they say it is compatible with the 5 Pro, which has the same case as I understand it. Still, not a huge issue since I already printed the adapter from Thingiverse for the board and it's sitting nice and snug in the case right now. They also stated that they "...do not provide the service of compiling firmware, we need customers to DIY." So they don't provide firmware for their products and depend on the community to figure out how to make things work? That sounds insane. I've built computers before, so I'm not completely new to working with electronics on this level, but I admit it's possible I messed something up somewhere. That said, the connections seem pretty straightforward and hard to screw up. When the display started going crazy I shut the printer down and only powered it back up again to see if it happened again and to get a video for tech support. It was in the touch screen mode (bright colored icons) and I'm not certain how to switch it to the other mode to test it. Advice to I can test it further is always welcome.

@@kerseyfabs: Please test the SKR Pro V1.2 with the SilentStepSticks using the TMC5160hv. This can operate with up to 50 VDC. his SilentStepStick TMV5160hv I did purchase directly from Vatterott, the company partnering with Trinamic to design and produce the SilentStepSticks. I did also purchase a Meanwell 600W 48 VDC. So please show and test the SKR Pro V1.2 operating the Stepmotors at 48 VDC with the SilentStepSticks5160hv and how it is done to use that 48 VDC.

I watched this video and then went to the BTT website and im completely shook on the number of products they have available. between the new stuff I'm seeing available on there and my CE5P seemingly pretty new generational wise not just out of the box.... a new video that include an updated version of guide above and difference between the component levels would be so amazing... like For example on here you talk about the 2209 URT being really nice, so i went on BTT to find some thing and now they have even newer ones and I'm like "aaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh helllpppp!!!"

Will these boards work with stock display? Also, is there a level code? So that the bed can level corre tly on tbe threaded rod.

@kerseyfabs Жыл бұрын
Is it possible? Yes. Does anyone support it? You may be able to find someone but I've never tackled it. It's a pain both from hardware and software. The bed can be leveled automatically if you use a board with two separate Z controllers. So that's at least 5 drivers, not just 4.

Great video. Have you been able to have the filament cooling fan have a dynamic control instead of always on?
@kerseyfabs
@kerseyfabs 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The problem is the lack of computer controlled fan headers. The SKR V1.4 boards only have one (which is used for part cooling) and the mini E3 V2.0 has two but you'll have to decide whether the second will be used for your controller fan or your hotend fan. I have mine on the controller but it could be switched around.
