Bigtreetech SKR Mini E3 V3.0 - Ender 5 and Ender 5 Plus

NOTE: The Ender 5 Plus requires a new display (at this time) to upgrade to this board. Please see my other Ender 5 Plus videos using Bigtreetech boards. ALSO NOTE: There are many reports of people having problems using this board with the stock BLTouch on the Ender 5 Plus. It does not happen to everyone. It did not happen when I tested it myself. The only known POTENTIAL fixes are switching to a CRTouch, switching to Klipper, or there has been a case of just needing to update the touchscreen firmware to the latest. With that being said, I CANNOT and DO NOT recommend this board on the Ender 5 Plus at this time. There are too many people having these issues and, while I've improved it in my latest 2.1.1 firmware, I have not been able to provide a fix for this issue. So far it appears to be an electrical issue that software has not been able to work around.

I recommend the SKR 2 or SKR 3 (just released beta firmware) at this time. The SKR 2 has been running great in my printer.

I was talking a rep at Microcenter, and he stated that if you change the BL touch to use the 5 pin Z probe, and change the firmware, it will fix the issue. Have you tried this?

Thank you for providing the compiled firmware. I had trouble with my ender 5 pro and the skr mini e3, I almost gave up on it and bought a creality board. I thought my prints were being underextruded but my problem was the Z screw on my old ender 5 pro is different from the newer ones. My lead screw had 4 starts and the provided firmware was built for a printer with the updated 2 start lead screw. Change your steps/mm for the Z axis from 800 to 400 and you'll be printing normally or change the lead screw to the new design.

I just did this in a Sovol SV05 which started with a Creality 4.2.2 board, I wanted TMC2209 stepper drivers so installed the BTT SKR Mini E3 V3.0. All of my issues were firmware based I burned up a CR Touch because I thought it was electrical, it turned out to be firmware. I replaced the CR Touch with a BL Touch. Ended up building Marlin from scratch.

You cannot right now. It may be possible in the future but it will still need rewiring most likely.

@@marcusmannes3410 Check your firmware again to make sure you have that activated and the original z endstop device commented out, some people have had to plug the black and white wires into where the mechanical z endstop would go instead of with the 3 BL Touch wires plugin, try that you cant harm anything

@@marcusmannes3410 There is a very common fault with the BL Touch having bad connections with the Ender 5 Plus when assembled by Creality, you can check if this is the issue by taking a small Allen wrench and push down on each side of the JST connector on the BL Touch and then power up it may look well connected but may not have a good electrical contact, also if the Hotend is parked in the back left corner it reports a flashing red error with the BL Touch.

My printer got unsusable because it keeps trying to print outside the board, how is this possible? I thought this would be plug and play. All the wires are in the right place, first it homes and then it makes the test line on the other side of the bed, it makes no sense, tried to compile marlin but it also does not help. It like it is reading the gcode of the slicer wrong.

I know its way to latr, But, you have propably plugged the stepper motor in the wrong Direction , if you dont want to change the wires, just put a ! Before the pin of the stepper . Cheers

I downloaded the firmware for my Ender five plus. However, I keep getting the error of Failed to enable bed leveling. I try to turn on the BL touch, it goes to the limit switches, goes to the middle and then the bed drops down about 40 mm and then errors out. This is my only issue with going forward with printing again.

You have two errors here. First, make sure your black/white BLTouch wire is connected correctly. That should hopefully fix probing. The "Failed to enable bed leveling" just means you haven't run a mesh (ABL) yet.

Need to create a walkthrough for everyone next so they can do the LCD cable wiring correctly and how to flash the LCD controller with the required update. You need to go into the menu and run the auto bed leveling. That will clear it up.

A drop of denatured alcohol (mineral spirits) will debond hot glue quickly. Give a few moments to wick in, you will be amazed. Do keep in mind that it is flammable so only use with power disconnected.

I believe that goes into the E0 Stop. Find a pin-out diagram and make sure the wiring is right: PC15 - yellow, GND - Black, +5V - red

I've just Installed the SKR Mini E3 V3 and TFT50 On my 5 plus with bl touch. What a nightmare. Started with leveling issues, then filament detector issues. Worked on marlin 2.1.1 for 3 days but got it working with bl touch connected to 5 pin input. Filament detector still not working. tried FD plugged into tft50 but keep getting errors, found it set to off in screen firmware. Tried to enable in marlin and get a build error. will keep trying but done with BTT.

BTT is definitely a DIY solution. The troubles you're describing don't seem to be a problem with the BTT products. I have a 2.1.1 build available. Check my KZbin community page or Facebook page.

You didn't successfully install my firmware. Download the correct file for you printer, rename it firmware.bin and try again.

Realistically you need 5 drivers because independent dual z -> less fiddle more print. 3 controllable fans. Skr turbo on my ender. I am 34% sure heater and thermistor polarities dont matter.

I like the feature but it's not like I use it much. Unless I hit something or move it, it usually doesn't need it. For those that don't want to cut up their case, this is an easy solution on the Ender 5 Plus. You're right on polarities but on some beds polarity matters. If you see two different colored wires, assume they mean it.

How do you enable the sd slot on the BTT Mini E3 V3.0 ? This is my second one that came that way. I returned the first one because I thought it was defective but the replacement is the same. No sd slot function. The system doesn't even see the slot on it's own. Board. Also just like the first hoard it says no printer attached. I really need some help please. I've contacted BTT and they are useless. They don't even respond. Please help me. My printer has been down for 4.5 months and I tired of the frustration. Thank you.

@@kerseyfabs Well have you ever felt like a total idiot. I'm there now. For whatever reason I had the TFT plugged into the wrong serial port. What an idiot. Just goes to show that even us so called old and wise can make some pretty stupid mistakes. And I made a big one. I still heeded to do a lot more playing with firmware and the such but it would have gone a lot faster had I noticed that mistake. However, I still appreciate your responding and trying to help. That was very kind of you. Thank you. I'm now doing some fine tuning for nozzle distance from the bed and a couple other minor things but at least everything now functions as they should. I've got the SKR Mini E3 V3.0 with the TFT 35 v3. Using the Ender 5 Plus (bl touch) firmware and.. it randomly restarts mid print and stops. Biqu hasn't responded to anything. So my Ender 5 plus is currently unusable.

I don't see any reason it shouldn't work. It may need a new display too. Then you would need custom Marlin or custom Klipper.

Did you make sure the black/white probe pins were plugged into the right location? See the video description. Each file says where it should be plugged in.

@@kerseyfabs Thank you for a quick answer, I observed that I had to switch the polarity on the black and white wires so they plug in correctly. Now when I tried to flash your firmware again I cant it into the machine. The filer changes to CUR but in the printer info it says "unkown" and I get a message "no printer attached". This other firmware works, I defined babystepping in marlin but I do not know how I can get it into BIN file so that I could flash it with changes I did... I could try to swap the polarit on the black and white wires back but then we come to the problem that it doesnt flash it correctly anymore...

Upgraded my new Ender 5 Plus with Bigtreetech Mini E3 V3.0: and TFT35 V3.0 this week and have spent hours disassembling and reassembling rerouting BLtouch cables and recompiling firmware and FINALLY have it doing auto bedlevel much more consistently. It seems that the V3 board has some issues with ADAPTIVE STEP SMOOTHING in configuration.h being enabled on this board The symptoms were not completing a full bed level and erroring out both in Marlin Mode and TFT Touch mode On Marlin forum it has been noted for a while that this seems to be an issue I run a V2 board and TFT without any issues on ender 3 but ender 5 had me beat I post this here in the hope it may save someone else the frustration that i have had Luckily i am a software and hardware nut and could imagine a new upgrader being really frustrated It would be a good ide to release this mod as a binary for others who have the same issues Be aware i am not guaranteeing this will fix all problems but it fixed mine

So I installed the SKR Mini v3 in my 5+. Get no display and the status light just flashes, even after trying to update the firmware. Sent email to BTT support and I get a reply saying that the display won't work with the board and that I have to buy a new display. I was under the impression that the board would work with the stock display, guess I return the board.

Will not be buying any more BTT/Biqu products, support/customer service is terrible: 1) Took them 3 days to respond to initial email and then another 2 days to tell me that the stock display isn't supported with the mini v3 2) They didn't even try to keep me as a customer (offer a discount on a new display or even that they are working on a fix to allow the board to work with the stock display) 3) Informed them that I will be returning the board and going with a competitor and get "thanks for the information" as a response.

I seem to be having an issue with the cr touch on my ender 5 Pro, correct firmware installed and with the z end stop unplugged when I run a bed level test the nozzle will move to front left lower down and raise slightly before giving me an m112 shutdown. With the z end stop connected it will try to do everything however the probe won't deploy

Either board works great. I do like the extra header though. My printer is almost completely silent when not in use. This means I can leave it on and ready to receive prints.

If I have a Creality 4.2.2 silent board (steppers in standalone mode) will it be worth upgrading to a SKR Mini, or would it be better to upgrade other parts of the printer?

I've downloaded the Ender 5 - BLTouch - BLTouch connected to Probe one but when I try to Validate Mesh it gives me the error - Unknown command: "G26 H200 B60 R99" and I think that is because Mesh Validation was not enabled in config. Can i fix this myself without rebuilding the whole firmware?

Hi, is the firmware the same for the Ender 5 pro? It has a different pitch on the Z axis so I'm guessing there must be a difference. ... I just installed the SKR Mini e3 V3.0 , the E3 V3 TFT screen and a CR touch.

It should work just fine on both printers. If you find the steps on the Z axis are wrong, you can change them in the settings menu without recompiling.

Right now I don't support any Bigtreetech board with the stock display but the BLtouch works with all of them. I am working on some new firmware with the stock screen but it's not ready yet.

Where exactly can we find the Configuration.h and Configuration_adv.h files that you used to generate your firmware downloads? On your github it seems that the configs now point to MarlinFirmware. I'm trying to just modify my Ender 5 Plus firmware to use the probe connection rather than the Z-stop connection for the BLTouch, so it should be a simple mod of your .h files if I'm able to get to them. would this work on a 5 pro? your video was super helpful and you firmware has gotten me the furthest so far but im still getting an issue where i turn the printer off and it disables the steppers, also if i hit auto home it will never raise the bed up and the z probe wizard is helpful but wont help me home the printer.

When you turn the printer off, it will always disable the stepper, they have to have power to stay engaged. If the probe self test works on boot but it won't home, check the location and polarity of the black/white wires from the BLTouch.

@@kerseyfabs I’ll give that a test. I was able yo get it to raise the bed by removing the z probe wires off the 5 pin harness and putting them into the z end stop a harness. The bl touch tests correctly but now will when I hit auto hone it will not deploy the probe and tries to crash into the bed. I did test out BTT firmware and it’s lacking some of the features of yours but it has the issue of dropping the pin but not stopping the bed. I am going to swap the polarity z probe and see what that does. I can handle hardware issues well and some software but not compiling or writing code.

@@PetrolheadDan14 somewhat yes, I had to break off the two wires for the z stop instead of the 5 pin for bl touch. I couldn’t get his firmware to work, but I got one of the btt pre compiled firmwares to work, I lost a bit of functionality and my printer flipped the home of x&y to the opposite corner (my purge line is on the left now). It’s working so I haven’t messed with it but I did buy the unified 2 firmware but I haven’t messed with it.

What do you mean you have to break the wires off for the z end stop? This is the issues I'm having and what I've tried already Cr touch connected and z end stop disconnected: auto home will only home x and y. If I run a bed level test the bed will move down around 40mm and then raise 10mm, will then give me a m112 shutdown error. Cr touch connected and z end stop connected: auto home will home x and y then try to home z however the probe won't deploy. Saw something online about removing the red and blue wire from the cr touch and connecting them into the z end stop connector on the board: however again on a z home the probe doesn't deploy again. I have tried multiple firmwares and 1 with the z end stop connected deployed the probe on a z home however it was still using the z end stop for home as when I removed the adjustment screw for it the nozzle crashed into the bed even though the cr touch probe had touched the bed

I'll be honest here, from a quality stand-point, you're not going to really see a difference under normal circumstances. MAYBE if you try and go too fast but not under normal print speeds.

Yeah. Stay away from the 3 still with the BLTouch. Through a lot of minor tweaks I've gotten some people stable on the 3 but not everyone. Go with the 2.0.

Great video, i used it as a guide and my E5+ now is back to work after a fried axis drive. Only issue as the print start after homing X-Y-Z (have cr-touch) suddenly runs X-Y fast and clash, the thing doesn't happen if a print tuzi gcode that came with the printer SD but with all my GCODE from CURA previously printed does. Any tips to solve the issue? Thanks

Thanks for great videos :D I have a Ender 5 plus upgraded with SKR Mini E3 V3.0 (and use your firmware) i have problem that Z stop doesnt work with the bltouch (have tried CRtouch also) the bltouch toes some clicking when startup and star with red light, when i try to autolevel the bed rise and push the hotend nozzle and i have to turn it off. i have tried switching some cables and double checked that its ok. (i have the original bltouch that came with the printer) Any advice? (i have also tried both the "probe" connector and the "Z stop" and corresponding firmware. Thanks in advance

Are you sure you are using the correct firmware? (BLTouch connected to Z endstop) Mine had the same symptoms when I used the wrong firmware. Also check that the wires to the z end stop are inverted and that the contacts of the probe are inverted correctly

I like the Bigtreetech TFT35 V3.0 (amzn.to/3v5sUoz). It's a good size screen and it's easy to find mounting models. I even did a video on it. With that being said, Bigtreetech makes several sizes and they'll all work if you can find someone that's designed mounts.

I couldn't get it to work so I tried a couple others and got bigtreetech's marlin 2.0.9.3 working with the cr touch but I thought yours might be better. Does the fan voltage depend on the main voltage or can this be set? There's no step down?

Some newer boards have a couple of fan headers that can be configured to different output voltages. Most boards you cannot change the output from the input voltage. So, 24V systems use 24V fans.

Hi Kris. I'm new to your channel and really need your help installing this board. My Ender 5 Plus is less than 5 months old and already 2 Creality silent boards have failed now. Consequently I'm trying a different board. Listening to your videos I hope I heard you correctly that this BTT SKR Mini E3 V 3.0 is compatible with my Ender 5 Plus with stock BL Touch, as the new board arrives Tuesday. My first question is as follows: I gathered from this video that the board would work in my machine. Is this true? Also from the video it seems implied then that I should follow the instructions you present installing it in the Ender 5 and apply while installing it in my Ender 5 "Plus." Is this somehow correct also? because it seems like to do so I need to fill in many blanks. :( In addition, if the board is compatible, and the board will work with the stock display as well, which firmware am I supposed to use.? There is only one listed that appears to be compatible. That being: " SKR Mini E3 V3.0 - Ender 5 Plus - BLTouch connected to Z endstop -drive.google.com/file/d/1TIa6..." Only my main concern with that is i don't think my BL Touch is connected to the Z endstop, unless you're referring to it being connected there down at the main board.? I'm sorry but while I'm a retired electro-mechanical technician I must admit I'm struggling to follow much of this. I especially hope your firmware "is" what I need and it's truly plug and play, simply installed by copying it onto a microSD card and booting the machine with it installed in the sd card bay. Because I've tried to digest much instruction compiling firmware, seeing if I fully understand the process before actually attempting the task, and I just can't seem to get through it yet trying to follow along with the instructions presented by several different youtubers so far. So I'm limited to using a completed file from you, or buying another junk Creality silent board, because they are shipped with firmware loaded and all set to run. Thanks for the great videos. Hope you can assist with my issue. i aslo am getting the error "failed to enable bed leveling". When I try to do the auto bed level the BL touch lights red the table lowers, the prob cycles in and out then it says level z first. after that it will say bed level complete and ask to save. It also won't allow the bl touch to be enabled it get an error failed to enable bed leveling. Any sugestions would be greatly appreciated.

Upon looking at the wiring of the BL tiouch I found the the original BL touch that came with the printer was wired in the oposite order as the replacement bl touch I switched out, so when I used the stock wire harness I think it damaged the BL touch. I am going to replace the BL touch and try to see if that fixes the issue. I will let you know it that does it. Thank you very much for your reply.

There have been different boards in the Ender 5 line over the years, so for the stock board, firmware may be different. For this board, the firmware should be the same.

Yes, absolutely. Same deal. Functionally, there's no difference in the connectors. The firmware just had to know wear it's connected.

Hey, thank you a lot! The instructions are awesome and not over-detailled. It was a great help! There is only one issue, I used the firmware, you provided and it seems, ist doesn't support dual-Z. During printing, everythig ist fine, but in the end of the auto-homing cycle, only one Z-stepper goes to +5 mm, the other one ist blocked. Ist there a workaround?

I appreciate all of that. On the Mini E3 boards though the two Z stepper ports are connected to the same driver. There's nothing to configure or setup. Just make sure you have both steppers connected to the board.

So... I now connected both z spindles with a timing belt and ran both steppers seperately - it worked perfectly fine, when only one stepper is connected electrically The problem only shows up, when each stepper is connected to it's own z-port. I now simply use an Y-cable to connect both steppers to only one port. For additional security, I leave the timing belt installed. That works for me, but the mysterium remains... In the video I show the correct mapping of the BLTouch pins on the board layout. You may need to manually rearrange those pins to match the pin-out.

The best board I've CURRENTLY used is the SKR 2. The SKR 2 requires some case mods though, that I show in my SKR V1.4 video. The SKR Mini E3 is a drop in replacement. You will need a new display for both and to print some mounting hardware. That should be it beyond some possible screws.

Great video. Found this when I bought SKR Mini E3 V3.0 for my Ender 5 Plus and wanted to know how to swap my board. Looks like I connected all correctly as per diagram and your guide helped me a lot. Now I wanted to flash the new firmware. It looks like the flash was ok, since the the file on the SD card got renamed as instructed but my printer remains dead or at least it looks that way. The BL touch turns on and does 1 cycle of "clicking" and nothing happens after that. The screen remains black. Is there any way to debug and see what is wrong?
