The company I work for has just had a Ford Courier van's DPF cleaned after the van went into limp, mainly due to it being used for short journeys. The mechanic told me that a regen involves over-supplying diesel, some of which washes down the bores, contaminating the engine oil. The oil level might even rise! He recommends _much_ more regular oil changes, because of this. I like the idea (from another comment) of opening the DPF chamber, throwing away the contents and welding it back up!

It does add a pile of complexity that make one want to return to the days of simple electromechanical vehicles. The easiest way to simplify things again now is move to an electric motor. You don't need all that anti-pollution kit because there isn't any in the first place. OK, you don't get 700 miles per tank, but you do get clean and quiet (and significantly cheaper motoring if you can charge at home). Seems a reasonable tradeoff.

I have a 2010 VW Polo TDI, and almost exclusively do short trips. You can notice when the DFP-filter cleaning cycle starts. The telltale signs are: choppy running at lower rpm, extra smoke, and bad smell coming from the exhaust. Higher idle RPM, goes from 900 to over 1000. Whenever this happens I simply go on a high octane detour from work, instead of going straight home. Had zero problems, since I started doing this. Now the car only goes into cleaning occasionally, instead of all the time, fuel mileage has also improved, except for the times I drive it like i stole it to clean the filter...

At high enough temps during a regen cycle the black carbon should burn off... its the white ash that comes from the additives and oil burning and such that clogs them up... and by about 100,000 km it's effects get noticeable. Unfortunately the regen cycle won't burn that ash off.. so your method will help hopefully get rid of the ash but not damage the latticework inside... wondering how that high pressure hose affects things inside...

The main reason the contaminants dont flow through the filter is because the particle size is too big. by using a solvent the dissolved contaminants can become smaller than the filter can hold and it will exit, so those on-car cleaning methods *can* work, but taking it off and cleaning in both directions is by far the best way.

i had problems with me last kuga had to remove the dpf to clean it. did clean it before via dpf pressure sensor tube this worked just as well as the removal watching the pressure drop on my forscan system. then doing DPF rest the values. the biggest problem is people don't investigate correctly as to why the DPF regen is not working in the first place to keep it clean. Mel this could be to the fact that your DPF pressure sensor is faulty. also make sure that your sensor when you get fits in place and goes as deep into the exhaust as the original or you could get incorrect readings. that sensor works like a 02 sensor it needs exhaust flow over it hence the holes in it.

it doesnt matter which way its flushed, best not to use narrow stream or turbo nozzle pressure washer on ceramics. soot doesn't matter, it can be flushed out after soaking in dishwasher tab or washing liquid, its the red ash that needs dissolving. wynns works to a point and needs 2 days, actually coca-cola works pretty much the same. alloy cleaner or HCL works better and does the job in 2-3hours,

Can you name all the tubes and wires going on to the dpf? it's not all sensors are they?
@BigVanSmallWorld Жыл бұрын
Basically yes they are the one I broke was a heat sensor the two pipes are for a pressure sensor that senses the difference in pressure between the inlet and outlet of the DPF if the pressure is high on the inlet side and low on the outlet this tells the ECU that the DPF is blocked 👍

I vrone down up scotland blocked DPF so ordered a reconed one from DPF clean team down Lester £750 😱 causw of the blocked DPF was a machanic fitting a cheap sensor and couldnt delete the engine management light which wouldnt allow the DPF to regenerate. Cost me a thousand pound in total and ruined trip.

So,they put these filters on the vehicle so it doesn't polute or contaminate the enviroment but loads of people are flushing them out like yourself (and i'm not pulling you on it as i would do exactly the same) with some kind of detergent/chemical and then rinsing it down the drain or into the nearest grass verge etc which then contaminates the enviroment,what nonsense. I just cannot see any difference between the old steam engines were they had to clean the soot and clinka out of the boilers and this dpf filter,it's ridiculous. Great video glad you got the soot and clnka out 😀👍

Just wondering does anyone know oven cleaner or WD-40 work?also how long will that cleaning out filter last for cheers
@danny6574 Жыл бұрын
@BigVansmallWorld Your reasoning for taking off the dpf to be cleaned is flawed. The dpf captures the bigger particles created at lower temperatures when the engine is cold. Then burns them off during the regen allowing them to passthrough the filter. Blowing a cleaning solution into the dpf dissolves the soot into small enough particles allowing it to passthrough the filter.
@andreadossi10 ай бұрын
The reason why dpf additives are used inline with the flow is because they make tue ash burnable thus allowing the filter to catalyze it , still a nasty process for the enviroment
@nigeldlm Жыл бұрын
That's probably why a lot of companies clean a dpf on the vehicle? You went from a £60/100 job to £500 or more depending on vehicle ! BUT you have only fixed a symptom of a fault that was causing your dpf to not be doing regens to burn away the soot ! Usually when they block it's because of ASH that needs cleaning but soot is usually a different problem !
@BigVanSmallWorld Жыл бұрын
You’re right there thanks for that 👍😂👍

Im not a fan off DPF how ever they there for a reason and work reasonable well untill the mileage get to around 100.000 mile then we all have problems However in my experience the dpf is blocked by oil coming from the crankcase breather filter which is blocked As the soot and ash build up then you add engine oil fumes you have a real stick mess inside your dpf Check inside intercooler pipe make sure it bone dry if not you will soon block the DPF

@merlin1346 Жыл бұрын
In theory your right, in actual fact you are incorrect. Wet cleaning is just as effective from the 'inlet' end of the DPF especially if the DPF is near vertical such as a Mercedes S class. One other point, is the heat sensor going to be at the right depth into the gas flow...

@@patkelly9907 Crankcase breather pipe. It's normal to have some oil residue going through the intake. The unfortunate part is the oil vapour mixes with sooty EGR gases in the intake manifold and turns to gunk attaching itself to components and over time clogs everything up.

More 'forever chemicals' finding their way into our drinking water. These are not totally cleared out by current water treatment practices with 18 out of 20 plants tested having well over limits deemed safe (although even that is a daft idea, they are not safe at all). We all (literally) pay the price for laziness like this.
@anthonyshaw7251 Жыл бұрын
Years ago I looked after forklift trucks in chemical plant, they had large honey Combe spark arresters on the exhaust, always used pressure washer, but importantly they were allowed to dry in a heated room, otherwise the soot stuck to them very quickly, like you see on videos in situ loads of steam but builds up too quick if not dried. 👍

@danielhines5698 In a normal regeneration cycle the soot is burnt off at high temperature, very different to removing soot by chemical methods. @@Dickie2702it's soot that's basically carbon. Carbon actually absorbs lots of bad stuff - it's used in NBC suits and filters and such, so while looks dirty it's ok. No worse than emptying a BBQ.
