FINALLY, I got the opportunity to test the difference between the modern formulation and the vintage formulation of a fragrance with Bijan Men. I absolutely love the modern version of Bijan, so after watching this video, it piqued my curiosity enough to get me to pull the trigger on the vintage. The difference between the two really is astonishing, to be quite honest. The vintage is such a powerhouse that my nose is so overwhelmed that I find it difficult to pick anything up from the modern formulation by comparison. As much as I love the modern version, I freaking adore the vintage and will enjoy the absolute hell out of it. So, here's a shout out to Enchante Perfumes - it is a wonderful place to be on the lookout for vintage perfumes, and Anooj is just a fantastic proprietor - I haven't seen better service. And thank you, Ramsay, for bringing that absolute gem of a store to my attention.

Just got a bottle of the Five Star version to fill out an order. I love it. A slightly sweet incense bomb to my nose. I do get a bit of oak moss and leather. But I enjoy the hell out of it. Still a power fragrance.

I thoroughly enjoy your reviews, so rich and full of information... You're a gem Mr Ramsey... Man, you and Rich Mitch are keeping me on my toes when it comes to the vintage sruff... I love my old school colognes and each time I see your videos about similar old school Colognes I own, that you have. I know a lesson is coming and especially when I check the distributors or batch codes man I get so dissapointed because it's only modern reformulated stuff. But however since I haven't placed my nose on the vintage stuff I am content as I love old school Cologne. But one day I shall be able to get the vintage stuff. And by the way I also wear one Cologne the entire day and I never layer unless I get an Attar of which there's a company here in South Africa which makes pure perfume oils attars of the vintage stuff...

Ooooh yes...this is the video I've been LOOKING for! I discovered "Bijan" (Vintage) earlier this summer and it ROCKED MY WORLD!! I've been on a trip backwards in time for fragrances ever since. I still buy a few modern frags, but I'm focused on hits from the past like "Boss no 1", "Antaeus", "Lapidus - Pour Homme" and eventually...."Kouros". Thank you for this video! I've been trying to tell everyone I can about Bijan. I even bought my frag-friends a few bottles of the modern version of it to spread the gospel a little...hehe.

A superb comparison! 💛 I actually picked up the beverly hills version a while ago, and then a 30mL of the new one shaped in that "b" recently. Definitely a good hit of oakmoss in the vintage with a clear nutmeg, rosey fruitiness, pine and dry herbalness. Rooty is a perfect descriptor. And that clove is literally the reason I picked it up. Amazing stuff. Besides the shitty atomizer, the new one has that benzoin, sandalwood and cinnamon in the drydown, but I also get a strong parsley in the first 20 minutes. Weird, but I've grown to enoy it. A warmer fragrance to be sure.

I had to get a bottle before the donut is gone. I lived in so cal in the 80s as a kid. Bijan is a landmark store on rodeo drive. This cost $360 there right now. It still has 80s powerhouse vibes. I really wanted the bottle for display. It's art that makes you question??? I love it. I get what you're saying about the patchouli vetiver blend in it. I really like that part of this one here. I very happy with this pickup

nice review, when you say dry rotting forest floor aromas, pistachios come to my mind. I had a bottle from when Bijan was alive, I bought it from Macy's but I remember the oakmoss clearly, that dry vegetal feel. Imma get the new bottle now!

I recently sent an email to Bijan and told them that I was looking for the original version but they didn’t tell me in their answer that it’s not the Five Star Version they are selling for 350: „Regarding the original Bijan fragrance, classic, years ago it was eau de parfum for lady and for men, it was little bit stronger. Over the years it has changed to eau de toilette and cologne for men and women. It is exclusive for the House of Bijan for US $360 for 2.5 ounces.“

This will be interesting..I've just picked up the modern version of Bijan and really really like it a lovely powdery vanillic musky floral..sprayed it on the back of my hand at 9 o'clock this morning and it's now half 8 in the evening and I'm still getting little whiffs of it when I move my hand..

Thanks for this video! I purchased Bijan in the 80's when I was a kid. I remembered how much I loved it and how sweet and comforting it was. So I recently purchased a new bottle, but was sorely disappointed in it. I feel it comes off much stronger and a bit acrid in the opening. I was able to obtain a vintage bottle from Enchante and it had all of the soothing sweetness and warmth an amber fougere should have. They both eventually settle to a similar experience, but I have to say, the first couple of hours with the new bottle on were unpleasant ... of course that's my subjective experience!

excellent review, anyone who says that there is no difference between almost all the versions released in the past and the current ones means that they have never compared them together. Try 80s Kouros against the current, try Santos 80s version against the current, try "ancient" Paco Rabanne against the current, Try Givenchy Gentleman against the current. Try 80's Arrogance against the current, both black and grey. These that I have mentioned are the most markedly different, practically only the name has remained, Equipage has changed a little but not much, even the great Azzaro is different but not toned down like the others. Bijan reminds me of the evolution he had, Giorgio for man

Hello - have you tried any of the other Bijan flankers? I'm blind buying (uh oh!) Bijan Nude for men... Wasn't sure about Bijan VIP 😯 I think it's worth getting these 'old' fragrances now before they all vanish and go price-crazy 😱 Can still get them for under 50 bucks 😉 Got old bottle of Bogart Pour Homme and it too is noticeably different from modern version (juice colour is greenish but modern stuff looks like water 😅) Love these comparisons and it shows effect of IFRA-forced reformulations - so sad. I have two versions of Bijan man but the one that seems like the vintage came in the regular box. Comparing the two, the one that came in the regular box is an oak moss bomb and the juice is darker. It’s possible I got a fake that came in the cutaway box. That one came nib had the cutaway box, unopened but the Bijan logo on the bottle is not as bold, it also says eau de toilette on the back top side of the bottle which my regular box version doesn’t have, the glass lettering imprint on the bottom of the bottle is not very well defined, and the sticker is not as good looking. It might be good news if my cutaway version was fake because I absolutely love the other one especially the oakmoss so if there is a stronger genuine version out there wow I can’t imagine how strong that one is. It’s fragrances like this that make me want to try more of the vintage stuff you love so much, even if it’s harder to find.

Bijan was my favourite fragrance from 1991-2008. The perfume for men and the cologne distributed by Bijan were the best perfumes out there. Later they sold the license to Five Star Fragrances and it changed to completely different.

Nice comparison. I'm not a huge fan of Bijan Man, although I haven't worn it in ages so I guess it is about time to give it another spin. My old splash bottle is labeled as Bijan Cologne, distributed by Bijan Fragrances Inc, Beverly Hills, made in USA. Cologne, 1.7 fl. oz 50ml vol. 87.09%. I've never smelled the current or any other versions than the one I have.

@@RamseytheRam probably will start on the 5 star version just for the vibe ,but knowing I will far prefer the green earthy vintage version, oh got those 2 L.M frags yesterday their the newer bottle format which came out in 2017 the older style in 2014 not really big time factor right there,first impression of both hard leather the more interesting from the getgo the opening is really good and they both go into mid and base really similar,not big projectors very oily for edp concentration so 5hey can and do hang around ,Black Afgano vibe big in both Hard Leather is ,imo the best of both making Black Oud somewhat redundant,both not anything challenging very people friendly don’t pay over 100 bucks a pop. Only first sniff under my belt will full wear in a day or so and then we shall see for sure ,but I think they will be great low key wear anywhere fragrances 🥂

I have the 5 Star modern formulation. Never smelled the vintage. The way I always characterized my Bijan is as smelling like grass soaked in lemon juice and left to bake in the sun. Fairly astringent. I guess they followed IFRA-negotiated oakmoss levels, but tried to replicate the smell of oakmoss with other notes. I have a Dua clone of Tom Ford's Moss Breches, and the sour bitterness in my Bijan is similar to that in the Moss Breches DNA. And so I assume that oakmoss as a note typically smell sour/bitter like that. But my Bijan does smell "vegetal" to me in a grass soaked in bitter/sour lemon juice in the sun sort of way. But not really rotting vegetation on a forest floor. But.....this is NOT easy to wear for me. Ramsey, a big difference between your nose and mine is that challenging aspects, astringency, roughness, "dirtiness", "funkiness" is easy-to-wear for you but not me. Our noses are calibrated differently. The modern Bijan is not an easy reach for me. The modern Bijan does smell 80's-ish to me. I can only imagine what the vintage smells like.

Five star must have bought the rights to these colognes. I know one of my favorite vintage colognes is Pierre cardin cologne spray for men is distributed by them now or they did at one time but wasn't the original distributor. I haven't bought a bottle to compare yet but will soon. It's a great frag.,

The Bijan golf ball looking cap, reminds of "Annuci". The bottle is made up of two golf balls, one on top of the other. I've read some very good reviews on it, so it may be a hidden gem. It was originally released in 1989.

I have two bottles of Five Star - one is exactly like your vintage, and the other exactly like ypur modern bottle. I dont know when the switch was made, but if you're perplexed by other reviewers calling the modern bottle too strong, it's possible they got a strong first batch like me. Mine opens up from the top, I can't grt enough of that oakmoss, and hate the modern formulation. Both of mine have oakmoss in the ingredients.

Hey Ramsey :) Is it true that the drydown of vintage bijan is similar to Patou Pour Homme? If yes then how does the drydown of the modern bottle compares? I'm 26 and LOVE old school fragrances (especially Drakkar Noir and Boss no1) compared to the modern, soulless, shower gel crap😂so of course I rock the modern bottle of Bijan (as an alternative to the super expensive vintage Patou) hoping that it smells similar to Patou which was worn by Sonny Crockett in Miami Vice :D

Not even 50% similar 😂😂😂 There is one other fragrance you can hunt down that is similar to patou pour homme but you have to get the vintage before Elizabeth Arden bought them... its Called Giorgio Beverly Hills Red for Men... again DONT get the modern but the vintage is probably 60 to 70 % similar

I also just got vintage Joop Homme with the cornflower crest from Lancaster. My SOTN. It's not the beast as described by most people, which is probably the Coty version which I haven't smelled. It's very mild. Like a watered down version of Creeds Original Santal. A sandalwood green Patchouli based fougere with the cinnamon toned down.

Fantastic review bro. I’m in UK And the vintage of this is very very difficult to come across. The original vintage has “cologne “ written on back and is so resinous and spicy - a true masterpiece . The original five star versions are ok But the most recent ones have been really really water down

The actual original vintage version is labeled as Cologne Spray, rather than Eau de Toilette. What you have is still a vintage version, but not the original release. I can send you pics of the original box and bottle if you like.

This is true i own 3 of the Bijen Cologne versions as well they are the original 1987 1st realest and they smell way nicer i get more of a creamy sandalwood powdery smell mixed with cloves Oak mass smell slightly different from the Hole round bottle

So make me understand. The one that Enchante has on display on the page on their website ( without specifying "vintage ") is the real vintage one? Cause that one goes for like 70 dollars on Ebay. I agree with you that there is no challenge between the two of them but I don't agree that the modern one has more honey. Has less of everything in my opinion. Is like a Mozart played with an out of tune piano. Unwearable for me. The old one is a MASTERPIECE alongside Tsar, Antaeus, Kouros, Fahrenheit, etc Ah, ok, I cooled down. The shipping from Canada is like 25 Canadian, so like 19 American, so it's kinda like the same I would order from the American ebay. I will sit and wait, I love it but I just splurged on a Tsar from 2000, I paid a ton of money for it. For the moment my need for vintage oakmoss is satisfied

I only know the current version and considering the low price you get good quality juice. However to me it smells dated. I love a lot of 80s frags but this one as well as Quorum and One Man Show just smell very dated to me. Especially the opening. Once it dries down it‘s ok. A lot of IBQ (that leather molecule from Bandit, Aramis, 3rd Man etc). It reminds me of OMS and 3rd Man minus the carnation. Somewhere inbetween. I love carnation so I prefer the Caron.

This is for frag nerds like me! I love this! I have been around this fragrance, Bijan, since I was in junior high 🏫 school. My wealthy aunt would buy Bijan from Nieman Marcus and I loved looking at the “donut” shaped bottle and I enjoyed the scent. She bought me a bottle when I was in high school when I graduated back in 1991. 😂 I still have that fragrance along with another brand new “in the wrapper” box I bought for under $20 at Marshall’s several years ago. I love this fragrance. The newer reformulated version smells a bit weaker. I have Bijan Nude and at one point, I had Bijan 🧬 DNA, which I absolutely love. Thanks for this video! I really enjoyed it!
