I saw a documentary by C'est Pas Sorcier (French show that does research on different subjects, it's production was sadly stopped) where they talked about how normally your brain has these three things that balance each other out; they are mostly in charge of happiness, and that when you're gambling, smoking or doing drugs these tend to go haywire, and make it even harder to stop. A lot of people started smoking when they were teenagers (specifically lonely teens with no friends), because they felt curious or just wanted to try it. I personally have a theory; that people do it like they taste food; they start with a little bit, by either not liking it or not tasting it enough to formulate an opinion on it, and then going back in for a slightly larger portion. Then, they start to take a liking to it, and start doing it on a regular basis, and can't physically stop in one go as that would mean taking away their prime source of happiness.
