Awesome video, I have watched it many times, as I love retro Kona bikes. I have a 2004 Kona stuff I built in August last year, it needs a few things doing to it so I am inspired to do a rebuild video on my KZbin channel of my Kona stuff

This was my bike!! absolutely loved it then shipped it abroad when I moved country. Was never the same after snapping the deraleiur, not to mention moving from Scotland to the Middle East meant no more hills or dirt jumps! Nostalgia City!

Awesome bike aye, you still got it? Bummer about the no dirt jumps!

A dark blue Kona Shred was my first real bike! I loved it so much and regret selling it to this day.. In fact your video got me so nostalgic, that I looked them up in eBay, found a Kona Stuff just 20 minutes away and now I’m going to pick it up this afternoon. Thank you so much for that trip down memory lane! And thanks for giving me an excuse to buy a old new bike, my wife will love it!
@waveywheelies4 жыл бұрын
Awesome man! Makes me happy knowing there’s other people out there that share the same connection to old bikes! Bet you’ll have a blast on that Kona Stuff. It always takes me back whenever I take mine out, the feeling never goes away..
@rolux48534 жыл бұрын
waveywheelies yes you’re absolutely right! I picked it up a few hours ago, cleaned it, dialed in the transmission and already changed a few small things from my oldschool parts bin. Took it for a little trail ride and it was so much fun! I felt like I’m 15 again! Since it’s a size large frame (I normally ride small or medium frames) it’s one hell of a trail bike for me, even uphill it pedals very well with the seat post up high. So well that in fact I’m thinking about either getting a cheap dropper post or doing it the old fashioned way with a double seat clamp setup. Yes, it’s on the heavy side, but because of that it’s bulletproof and the geometry suits me so well. The Marzocchi Dirtjumper 2 needs some TLC (I.e. new oil and a few strokes with a fork/damper pump, because it’s way too soft and bottoms out on anything bigger than 30cm drops) but because of that I only paid 140€ for the whole bike! Of course I’m going to repair the Marzocchi Dirtjumper 2, but then I’ll consider replacing it with something like a Rock Shox Pike U-Turn (or Lyrik, Revelation etc, maybe even a Fox Fork if something cheap comes up) to enhance its amazing trail capabilities. It’s crazy how this cheap bike build is giving me so much fun and satisfaction! Again, thank you very much for your inspiring video on this amazing bike which started it all for me!

@@rolux4853 Yo when you do that fork swap you should definitely so some post on it! I have an old bike with the same forks by the sound of it and they need an upgrade but idk what to swap to
@rolux48534 жыл бұрын
@@wyatth6824 hey man, in swapped the fork a few days after writing that comment. The Dirtjumper worked fine after I took everything apart and cleaned it, changed the oil and pumped up the air cartridge. But I wanted more versatility for the bike, something that handles a little bit more sophisticated and is lighter. So I got a Rock Shox Pike U-Turn with a broken Motion Control Unit (the damping of the fork), for the unbelievable price of 40€. I was able to repair the motion control unit with new circlips I had laying around in my garage. Of course I also cleaned everything on the inside, made a service and changed the oil, spring grease and sealings. You can set the travel anywhere from 95-140mm which helps immensely for it’s intended „Trailjumper“ use. I would definitely recommend this fork if you’re able to snag one for a good price! I don’t know the prices in your country but over here in Germany you really have to be lucky to get a good fork this cheap now. The prices skyrocketed in the last months and some people try to sell their old 26“ Pikes for 200€ and more.

Great video, awesome reference to Kona frames, which in my opinion are the most underrated bike makers in the day. I recently acquired a Kona Scrap in camo green and slapped it with a RockShox XC30 TK and Deore drivetrains with Alex rims wheelset, and it still is above par with the new ones, maybe even better in durability.

Depending on how hard you wanna go with upgrades I highly recommend hydraulic brakes. I have a set of Shimano Deore hydraulic brakes on my mtb and love them. I still rock a bike with some cheap tekro mechanical ones but the feel of the hydraulic is so nice. Sick build as always dude!
@wyatth68244 жыл бұрын
On a side note if anyone is as much of a tech fan as I am, TRP makes a all in one hydraulic caliper for disc brakes that you can operate from a plain old cable system, though it is more for road bikes than mtb. So like, it is a normal cable and lever, but instead of a mechanical caliper it is a taller square-ish caliper that is a full hydraulic system.

I'm glad I came across your video. I have a 2006 Kona Stuff (bright green frame) and was thinking of selling it. It was a choice between that and a flat bar road bike I used for commuting. I don't commute by bike anymore and I don't really ride dirt much these days but I wanted to keep one bike for cruising around. Was only thinking of getting rid of the Kona because you know, 26" is dead and replacing parts is getting harder, but reading through the comments here it looks like it's still worth keeping. Thanks, you helped me make up my mind. Looks like it's bye bye to the flat bar.

I’m in the middle of building up my 2012 Kona stuff up again, if you can get your hands on a set I’d recommend some Rockshox Argyle forks man, those were really good jump forks a couple years ago, can’t go wrong there. Manitou circus forks are good too, although mines have been less reliable(both pairs cracked at the same part of the dropouts) but were very good forks when I had them. Nice bike though mate, my cousin used to have a shred just like that. Always loved a Kona myself. 👌
