@@superleggenda Are but have you got any other spares :) With modern computer inventory control, it should be easy to track down where parts are in stock. Before the UK stupidly left the EU, I was able to order computer spares from Poland and have them arrive next day or the day after here in England.

The scarcity and difficulty of finding parts is a big reason Ive hesitated getting a triumph, the Japanese bikes have parts readily available with multiple dealers.

As a big Triumph fan (and owner) I'm shocked that a head gasket for a relatively modern Bonneville like yours is unobtanium! Hope you're back on the road soon

It's good that Triumph stepped in to help but not great that they had to. In the past I have enjoyed or witnessed service above and beyond the call of duty from my local Harley dealers (and even H-D UK) when helping with unexpected problems. But, obviously, not all motorcycle businesses have the time or energy to do that for all their customers.

@@JakeM218 Well one way or another, worldwide demand for T120 gaskets seems to have outstripped supply. I suspect the root cause here is that owners are actually using and wearing out these bikes. Don't they know the bikes are just for cleaning and polishing on Sundays and for use as garage ornaments at other times?

Hi Freddie, when you go to Cornwall don't just blast down the A30 or A38 turn off at Exeter and take the A379 it takes you the whole of the south Devon coast, I know you did a bit the other year but it's worth it. Passing Powderham castle, Starcross, Dawlish Warren and the Rd between Dawlish /Holcombe and Teignmouth is beautiful. Then across the bridge into shaldon and one of my favourites the twisty coast rd from shaldon to maidencombe ❤ the through torbay and on down to Kingswear and the ferry across to Dartmouth (still staying on the A379) past the beautiful Blackpool sands then Slapton sands (which you stopped before) this time check out the Exercise Tiger memorial. Then on to Kingsbridge (nice museum) and as you go through Plymstock on your left is Legends Cafe and GT motor cycles, well worth a stop 😎. Then cross the bridge into Plymouth turn right and rejoin the A38 to the Tamar bridge. There you go route sor ted 😂 But it's so worth it. M

Freddy, I have one of those enfields , its a 1986? 350 , and it's STILL going , no problems at all ! In fact, Im going to ride it to the allotment in a few min ! Rough as a bear's bum, front brakes are useless but I just keeps going and and ,,,, the spares are ALWAYS available ( cheap to ! ) can EVEN make them myself if I want, its so simple! Also, as a mechanic,the reverse is true, I have all the "old" skills , wheel rebuilding, points, condenser magnetos, lead filling bodywork, but I haven't kept up with the new technology, So If I was plunked back into a dealership,,,and presented with fly by wire injection mapping etc , I would have to ask one of the young fellas !

Get yourself an RE Interceptor 650, euro 4. Loads of opportunity for mild tinkering with good bang for buck, not to mention the opportunity to make some videos on each mod or tweak. You could tweak seat, handlebar risers (combined with seat for greater comfort), YSS suspension front and rear, disc brakes, master cylinder, rear rack, free flow exhaust + slip ons (keep baffles in for minimal volume change), tyres, air filter, booster plug, lights, etc etc ... Or you could leave it stock. At any rate, it would make a pleasant change on the motorcycle side of things to see a different long term bike, being used and tested in the manner you have been using the bonnie. While there's lots of Interceptor 650 content out there, it's mostly technical and not lifestyle or adventure vlogging in nature ... So there's a niche there to be filled.

I used to work in Ipswich from time to time, and along the Suffolk coast, one job clearing out overgrown electricity sub stations and another job delivering white goods to private homes. Suffolk coast is beautiful especially in the summer, twisty coastal roads and architecture from Roman and the middle ages. Always looked like the people had a few Bob to live there.

Also, if you have multiple bikes, you can always lend them out to deserving causes. Long ago, my flat mate with the project Hyde Trident in his bedroom needed a ride for a weekend trip with lads from the pub. I agreed to lend him my "sacrifical" bike, a well used but sorted Honda CB400T, but it turned out not to be taxed. So I ended up lending out my other bike, a nearly new XJ550, instead. I'm sure he enjoyed thrashing the XJ to within a inch of its life all weekend, but it came back none the worst for the experience.

Embrace the pedals Freddie! Funny been thinking the last few weeks about this, I have 4 pedal cycles ( one of which has a shimano mid mounted motor) and a Classic 350. Been out on the Enfield twice this year done 50 miles , but done hundreds on the pedal bikes, somehow can't bring myself to ride the motorcycle when it's so lovely to have the freedom of riding a pushbike. Commiserations on your long wait for spares. That used to be more of an Italian bike owners' thing back in the 1980s. In fact, after our V50-II destroyed its final bevel drive, we had to wait ages for a new full set of bevel drive internals, because Guzzi had completely redesigned the unit. I was fine because I had a car as alternative transport but my girlfriend had not passed her test so that was no use to her. Fortunately back then, there was a plentiful supply of cheap s/h bikes locally. So we bought not one but two other bikes while waiting for spares. First there was the Honda CD200 Benly. That cost us no more than two hundred quid from a bloke in the next village. It had minimal ground clearance, very bouncy suspension and limited brakes but a totally unburstable engine and was huge fun to ride. Then, by an amazing stroke of luck, a bloke who worked where we did traded his well used GS650 Katana for a shiny new Honda. Our friendly local Honda dealer had the GS priced to clear at £450. After placing £450 in cash on the counter, my girlfriend was allowed to test ride it. She returned 20 or 30 minutes later, grinning from ear to ear and confirmed that we were indeed buying it. I think her words were along the lines of "it's rock steady at 100 mph, so we're definitely having it". We had to put a new back tyre on and fix a failed voltage regulator, but even after that it was fantastic value for money and an awesome bike to ride. I'd actually been on the look out for a 650 Katana for a while, after experiencing one owned by a friend.

This is why i have multiple backups for my transportation. The public transportation here in utah is terrible if you don't live in salt lake city. So I have 3 chevy pickups, a royal Enfield interceptor 650, and if all else fails i have a ride1up revv1 electric bike. And I can say that the electric bile has saved my bacon several times this year.

@@FreddieDobbs yeah, I'd break down in one of those pickups. Get a lift home to get some tools or spare parts. Go back to the truck on the bike. Fix it by the side of the road or wherever, throw the bike in the back and drive home. I essentially did the same thing when I bought my interceptor 650. Drove a pickup to the dealership 40 miles away, rode the interceptor back, jumped on the electric bike and took the train near the dealership, rode it there, threw it in the back of the pickup and then drove it back home. They're extremely useful if you don't have any kind of backup transportation.

Approaching the big 70 yo. so wanted to get back to basics. Id give Triumph the big flick, no excuse not having a basic simple part. Wait for RE 650 Classic due out soon and switch.

I can't help but think that Triumph have let you down badly, I spent the whole of June stripping down and refurbishing an NC29 which is now 30 years old, maybe I was lucky but I have ordered and received over 20 items, one of which had to be sent back and replaced, one order was from a German supply and another from China and this is now back on the road with an MOT. Good luck getting this sorted and back again Freddie.

I think it's time for a change Freddie 😉 I can't believe Triumph can't easily lay their hands on the parts, this is very worrying or is it a marketing exercise to get people to upgrade. The Harley looks nice. I've owned two, an 1986 and 2000 softail and both cost me a fortune to maintain. Good fun, but expensive. If you've been looking what you would buy then you're already half way there to doing it 🤣

A lot of motorcycle manufacturers don't keep parts for older machines, which is crazy because they are the ones that are more likely to need them. Triumph in particular have constantly uprated their engine sizes for years now. Back in the old (pre Bloor) days you would always find some company making pattern parts to replace the O.E.M ones but it doesn't seem to happen nowadays unless you own something made by a company that still exists like BMW.

Retired expat living in Thailand. My 2003 Suzuki Caribean has been in the shop for two months getting some rust spots fixed. No worries, have another car and two mcycles. In Thailand ypu just have to relax and go with the flow. Drive past the shop every day, but cant see the truck as its inside somewhere. Hopefully will be done when we return from Vietnam on 1/29. Upside is cost will be 1/10th of US or UK cost and expected work quality should be excellent.

Freddie, ive been riding motorcycles since 16 . 20 years of riding and wrenching on my motorcycle, i finally bought a brand new Indian Scout Bobber. I still do my own maintenance, but it's pretty nice riding a brand new bike, without worrying that your bike will break and leave you stranded. Hopefully you can fix your triumph quickly and maybe think about getting a new bike and have both bikes.

Buying small run, limited edition bikes is going to get you into the no-spares scenario even quicker. Part of the issue is tight companies not making the volume of parts they used to. There was pride to keeping a bike running. Makers were proud of that. Now they want you buying new bikes every 3 years. Different business model & different rider mindsets. Built in obsolescence. Older bikes are greener too. Happy trails 🏍

It’s not just bike parts, a lot of car parts very hard to source in a decent time frame, in fact everything seems to be difficult in recent times, staff shortages everywhere & don’t get me started on Royal Mail with anywhere between 6 & 11 days for a first class letter to arrive!

From experience I know in Australia there is no Triumph after sales service or parts, same with many other brands . Importers will not tie money up in parts etc .

Freddie, you are costing me money! Your rant about how great the Pan European is caused me to look them over. I bought a 2000 1100 model. It is amazing! Being 23 years old I was a little concerned that it may break down but I’m loving the sport touring ride! Then your rant about BMW and parts availability got me thinking again. On Tuesday I will be taking delivery of a 2023 BMW R1250RT 😂 The Harley and KTM are now for sale. Making a gasket works on side covers and similar areas but a head gasket has to withstand tremendous temperature and pressure. They have special metals embedded in the gasket. Not something you can make at home.

Glad you are getting things sorted, the head gasket would not have been able to be made from gasket paper, due to the stress on the head gasket it's special material so it's different from say a clutch or stator cover gasket, guessing maybe head gasket problems might be rare so the gaskets are scarce ?. I love tinkering with old pushbikes (used to build them as a hobby), i'd have sorted that bike up for you in no time, pity I'm 400 miles up the road : ).

Parts are really getting scarce all over. When I bought my Bonnie this spring....I wanted heated grips and a center stand installed. The dealer didn't have the parts in stock and they said it was a 3 month wait before they'd show up. That's on a brand new t120. Ridiculous....

A very frustrating situation, good luck getting back on the road with the Bonneville asap. That BSA will never come up to 2013 standards and thank goodness for that, it's a terrific bike. Maybe you can chat up the owner when it's back on the road, I think you'd love it if you rode it ;-)

Sorry you got caught out like this Freddie, I've only owned Kawasaki's! Cutting your own copper gasket is just a personal convenience, I've always been able to get all sorts of aftermarket gaskets from eBay and Amazon in the United States, even on ancient bikes from the '80s, I agree that factory parts are always going to be the best solution sometimes you have to make do with what's available, anyway it sounds like you've got it sorted just something to think about next time

It's a BSA A10, the A65 was a unit construction engine, The 2008 Bullet was the very last year of the iron barrel models.

Thanks for confirming that. In the late 1970s, a number of friends at uni owned A10s, but most were not often on the road. That said, I think a well sorted A10 or A7 is a great classic to own and ride.

I have a sport glide , it’s the most versatile bike Harley do , It takes less than 5mins to take the bikini fairing and panniers off and the bike Looks more like a low-rider , comes with cruise control and remote preload adjuster. Monika will find the pillion seat uncomfortable in a short time

Could be that some people considering purchasing a roughly 10 year old bike may need to do some detective work on parts beforehand. The market is full of bargains but speak to someone with experience and make a list of what could be needed to keep your pride and joy on the road. Always keep your pedal bike maintained! LOL! I have a '72 Raleigh LTD3 i picked up used that i take out on the Hudson Valley Rail Trail/Hudson River Walkway a couple of times a week if i can make it. A bicycle is a great way to keep in shape, and the gas mileage is great! :p

Greetings from down under. I sincerely hope you,re sorted, however and this may not be relevant if your gasket is a specialized piece of kit. I used to make gaskets from gasket paper/sheets combined with gasket goo. Problem was solved, no oil leaks. The part needing the gasket is the template, cut out with a sharp knife, scissors. Hope you,re ok. Love your work. Thanks.

With modern overhead cam engines, there are usually key oilways through the gasket that must not be obstructed. So I'm sure Freddie's mechanic does not want to risk any "craft made" parts in the rebuild.

So frustrating regarding the parts, my little Fiat 500 just randomly had the gearbox mount snap last week but also damaged the driveshaft which was going to be 3 weeks wait from Fiat, thankfully as they are the same as the Ford Ka the garage managed to get one from Ford and i got my 500 back this morning, Mines only on 35,000 miles so im hoping it gets to 200, like yours!

You can't cut a head-gasket mate, they're made out of copper or similar heat resistant material. Interesting that Triumph don't have a single head-gasket for an engine they've been selling for years. If you needed one for that Royal Enfield Bullet Hitchcocks would get you one for the next day. :)

I'm sure H-D gaskets are readily available too - either from H-D or from aftermarket suppliers like James. I've heard that a lot of independents prefer James gaskets to the genuine H-D items.

First world problems Freddie. Really surprised that you haven’t bought a second cheap bike. Sellers are finding it hard to shift bikes at the moment as money is so tight for most people. I am sure you could find an excellent bike for under £1,500-2,000 even less maybe. Sell it later with only a small loss, break even or even make a small gain or keep it.

Hey Freddie, what gasket is it you need? I have most of a 900SE gasket set inmky shed in Sudbury. If I've got the one you need you're welcome to it. ....Sorry just read it's a head gasket you need, I have most of the bottom end gaskets. Hope you get the one you need quickly. This really isn't good enough from Triumph, these are common, popular bikes, all the spares should be readily available. Very poor.

Is this a Triumph problem? In Brazil where there are a lot of motorcycle couriers most own a Honda, because the parts are very easy and cheap to find.

Lots of trouble for an easy fix. 1. Remove head. 2. Tap spark plug hole and put in heli-coil. 3. Reassemble. Use new head gasket if you have one. If spark plug hole is accessible, no need to remove head.

I had the shock of my life I needed a new chain for my bike, a 128 link 525 to my surprise most places were out of stock of did chains the local garage could get one but it would be a month and £175 I nearly passed out. So I took to eBay and I had the option of one chain for £117.00 with a discount code so I got a chain for £100.00 and it arrived next day I had a narrow escape

Hey Freddie Since my suggestion to you that it was possible make your own gasket, I have gotten several comments informing me that you probably needed a head gasket. If so, then that changes everything,as it’s not possible to cobble together a proper head gasket. My mistake and I hope the source in Italy comes through for you. Must be frustrating for you. Gaskets can be cut, you can find blank sheets in stores - as long as you have a way to trace the original it shouldn't be that hard. Certainly it shouldn't keep a bike off the road for months. Might even be able to find someone that does it commercially.

Sorry to hear this mate, it happened to me that some assh*ole smashed my Kawa ZZR just before the summer and I wouldn’t be able to use it during all of it until the parts came to the workshop several months afterwards. Anyway I believe here you guys are paying the price of Brexit (as well in other areas) and it’s a pity…hopefully the UK would come back to its natural place! Have a good summer mate!

And think, that push-bike is 20+ years old, and you can still buy everything you need for it. This is the versatility of the bicycle, and why every biker should own one - just in case.

Imagine if you used your Triumph bonneville to go to work and back everyday and it was off the road for 10 weeks 😢 this is ridiculous. I was offered a Triumph Bonneville at a very good price and l love it, the whole cool factor 😎 thing was eating away at me but l decided on a 2002 Honda cb 500s with 13k totally immaculate. I simply don't trust Triumph, they plaster they're bikes in the Union Flag but build the bikes were ever they can get the cheapest labour. Sad 😔
