Decided to ride my bike from West Palm Beach to Key West. 270.2 miles in total over 4 days. My route took me along the eastern Everglades levee road, through Florida city, then along Card Sound Rd to Northern Key Largo. I followed US-1 all the way down to Key West. I couldn't have asked for better weather; cool in the morning and a slight tailwind in the afternoon. Traffic was light and gave me no problems the entire trip. For my gear storage I used a gravel bike with two small panniers in the rear, a half frame back, and a handlebar roll. I filmed this with a Gopro Hero7 (I didn't have room for my bigger camera) and I think it came out pretty good. White balance was off on a few clips and the FOV pretty much stays the same the whole time, but it was a pretty failproof setup the whole way. I really do love the new stabilization and hyperlapse.

UPDATE: Due to popular demand, I have created a GPS route that closely mirrors the route I took. Please use this as a reference guide but DO NOT trust that this will be 100% passable as construction along the Everglades canals can change from year to year. Do not expect to always be able to cross a canal over the control station (dam) as some of them are razor wire fenced and gated. I highly suggest using the most recent google satellite maps and scouting out the crossing points during a shorter day ride or with a vehicle. Some of the streetview pictures along these canals are many years old and may not be reliable or even located in the correct place. If you get stuck on the wrong side of the canal it can easily turn into a 15-30 mile detour... in the deadly south Florida sun. There is almost no shelter on this route, camping is illegal and impractical on most of the Canals in south florida, so make sure you thoroughly plan ahead!
This route starts at Riverbend Park in Jupiter, FL. It follows the eastern edge of the greater Everglades wetland area. As you travel south there will be civilization on your left side and expansive wetland wilderness on your right.

MM 17 GPS 26.722756, -80.167283 you can continue following the Owahee trail but this will lead through the back of a private gated community, I have never had a problem here as the road through the neighborhood leads out to Okeechobee blvd. If you have a problem with this turn East at the intersection and then south when you get to Jog Rd. Take Jog rd to Okeechobee Blvd then head west where you will meet up with the planned route after a 3.85mi detour. MM 28 GPS 26.684361, -80.292284 - Publix shopping center, great place for a break and resupply if needed... I def picked up a pub sub to go here. Unfortunately the closest access to the canal leads to an often locked gate at a control station... so you'll have to head south on Flying Cow Rd behind all the horse ranches to meet up with the canal trail. MM 43 GPS 26.498772, -80.221853 - Arthur R Marshall Wildlife Refuge boat dock and vehicle access point. Rendezvous resupply, or bailout location. MM 55.5 GPS 26.355488, -80.297640 - next taste of civilization at the Loxahatchee Everglades Airboat Tours area. No services or resupply available here, WaWa gas station is 6mi east on county road 827. MM 73 GPS 26.129629, -80.365461 - Markham Park, resupply and bailout location. GPS 26.129561, -80.365439 MM 80 GPS 26.144385, -80.447849 - former town "Andytown" is now the I-75 US 27 interchange, you will have to cross US27 and ride south on it for about 3/4 mi. an Access road with a closed vehicle gate on the west side will be get you back to the canal trail. Some flat land that may be secluded by bushes for an "extended break" if necessary. MM 86 GPS 26.060796, -80.443620 - Everglades Holiday Park, airboat tours, small gift shop, maybe they would allow tent camping? Bailout location MM 91 GPS 26.007742, -80.442448 - Pines Blvd Walmart resupply 3mi east, bailout point MM 95 GPS 25.942399, -80.440470 - bailout location MM 110 GPS 25.761606, -80.502402 - Miccosukee Casino and bailout location MM 116 GPS 25.667162, -80.498503 - Edge of the Everglades Trail, heads west around some homesteads... nice change of scenery. Several flat areas for "extended breaks" in the area, watchout for private property. MM 123 GPS 25.608566, -80.538227 - bailout location MM 134 GPS 25.484490, -80.573944 - heading south from this point presents a few possible options that may be impassible. Look at the satellite images carefully for the Frog Pond Trail area... I believe my route is correct, but the other roads may or may not be passable. The eastern trail along the C-111 canal leads to a control station at GPS 25.444445, -80.560077... I believe this is passable for pedestrians and cyclists. Unfortunately it is not easy to scout so I mapped an alternate route. MM142 GPS 25.403702, -80.558690 - Ingraham Highway, heading west leads to Everglades National Park and the Flamingo Marina. Visitor center is 1.5mi west, bathrooms and water fountain available. Gift shop may be open. If you continue south on the canal trail there is no other bailout point or resupply for 17 miles. Make sure you have plenty of water before continuing south. MM 159 GPS 25.235613, -80.432621 - you've made it to the Keys, but you still have 6 more miles of US-1 traffic before Key Largo. If you've made it this far, you should be able to easily navigate the Keys without any more mile marker hints. If you intend to ride to the keys you have 2.5 options: Option #1 Continue on the canal trail past Ingraham Highway (Everglades Nat'l Park entrance road) and eventually meet up with US-1 in the Southern Glades. I did not do this part so I cannot guarantee that it is fully passable. If you choose this option be very aware that you will not have any shelter or chance to resupply until Manatee Bay Marina approximately 7mi from North Key Largo. This is the route I have mapped because it is the most difficult to navigate. I do not suggest this option unless you are confident and prepared; also it leads you onto US-1 which is not fun imo. Option 2: This is the route I took and my suggested route for anyone interested in this ride. At mile 104.6 (GPS 25.483394, -80.566886) you will turn east toward a control station and cross the north/south canal into an agricultural area. The dirt road will have the east/west canal on your right and assorted ag fields on your left. The first road you will get to is SW 217th Ave. Your goal is to get to Florida City, most of the land between you and that location is agricultural and layed out on a grid... so not too difficult to navigate. If there is any significant headwind you can ride SE in a block by block pattern that looks like stair steps... or you can take 217th Ave south to SW 344th St (W Palm Drive) and then head east directly to Florida City. At the intersection of W Palm Dr and US-1 there are several restaurants and hotels. This is where I stayed before transitioning into the keys leg of the ride. From here you travel south on US-1 and then SE onto Card Sound Rd. This road is usually much less busy than US-1 but it is still one of the only two roads that lead into the keys! I had a great time by myself on this road at 4am, but it has almost no street lights so make sure you have a good light and possibly a headlamp too... no one wants to smash into a crocodile (yes, i mean CROCODILE) at 15-20mph in the pitch dark!. Once you get to county road 905, turn south and you'll be headed to Key Largo! Option 2.5: is the same as option 2, but you stay on US-1 as you leave Florida City. I really think Card Sound is a more enjoyable option unless there is road closure or something that forces you to take US-1. Now that you are in the keys, your pace should pick up significantly and you'll have a plethora of options for breaks, food, resupply, and overnight accommodations. Unfortunately, there are surprisingly few tent camp sites in the keys though. Most of the ride along US-1 can be done on bike paths. Keep your eyes out as they often turn and cross US-1 to the other side. Some paths are completely hidden from the main road. Construction on the bridges may close some of the paths and many are shared by pedestrians and fisherman... watch out for fish hooks! Seven Mile Bridge does not have a dedicated bike path, if you take the pedestrian path on Old Seven Mile bridge you will be forced to turn back around about 1/3 of the way. I have not visited Pigeon Key, so if you want to do that it could be cool. I hope you have a nice tail wind while crossing Seven Mile Bridge, but you may not so stay safe. My ride was very pleasant, but I have heard stories of very bad drivers swerving into the bike lane. Use google street view to prepare yourself for this bridge. There is no shelter and it is not safe to stop. After Bahia Honda State Park (great place to stop! also has tent camping sites, if available) you'll get back into several small keys and small bridges. As you get closer to Key West the right side view will be marshy salt flats that just suck the hydration out of you if it's mid day. Passing Stock Island you have two options, right or left... I like going left along the south side of Key West all the way to the Southernmost point. Take a selfie in between the dozens of tourists then go grab a celebratory meal and drink!

Great video, great route planning, I’ve been thinking about selling my road bike for a gravel, I used to ride the levee at the west end of Atlantic Blvd on my mountain bike, gravel bike looks more comfortable for this kind of trip. After reading all the comments, seems like I’m not the only one who would want to join in and make this a group ride. Thanks again for the awesome video!

Only a handful of miles were "uncomfortable" on a gravel bike... Where I would've preferred some front suspension and fatter tires. Except for the road section in the keys, a proper hardtail mountain bike with less aggressive tires would do just fine. I'm glad many people are getting inspired by this ride, that's why I brought the camera along. I definitely want to do it again, bit wouldn't attempt it in months other than December - March

FYI for anyone planning this route in 2020... There is currently a Google Maps glitch that will not let you plan a southbound bicycle route through 7 mile bridge. It will reroute you to Ft Myers to take the ferry to Key West. Even if you are starting in Key Largo or Marathon, it will still send you hundreds of miles north to the ferry!!! You can plan the route in reverse (northbound) from Key West without a problem. I dunno when Google will fix this, but it's like they think 7 mile bridge is too scary to pedal across. Regular vehicle driving directions work fine.

The greenway trail runs mainly along US-1 and A1A. It can be a nice ride in many areas, but in south Florida that usually means sharing the road with lots of traffic. I planned this route to avoid traffic as much as possible. The greenway sections I have seen down here are usually just a colored bike lane on the shoulder of the road with no protection from vehicles.... Didn't seem like something I would enjoy for more than a few hours at a time.

Nice! that is going to be a fun but difficult trip! I always carry 3x gopro batteries and a usb charger. I keep my gopro off and turn it on by pressing the record button. Since I normally don't record clips longer than 20-30 seconds I can get the battery to last all day... usually 40-60 clips. Timelapse and hyperlapse does eat up battery, but I only used it a few times and when I knew I was going to be able to recharge later on. I carried a 10k mah USB battery with me. Also, I just started using the program "Ride with GPS" and it's route planning feature is way easier than manually doing it with Google Earth.

There isn't really much tent camping in the keys, Bahia Honda State Park has tent sites but they usually have to be reserved months in advance. A few of the RV campgrounds have spaces for tents but not many. Most of the areas off the trail is either mangrove swamp, private land, or public parks that don't allow camping. I'm sure there are a few stealth sites but not easy to find.

Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties have publicly promoted biking trails on the levees. I pretty much just connected them together on Google Earth by making a custom path, then exported it to my phone as a gpx file. Had to download a gpx viewer app to use the file on my phone though. It would've also worked with any Garmin GPS unit. Really the only thing you have to be careful with is not getting stuck at a closed to the public pumping station (one in Palm Beach county just south of Southern BLVD) and not getting stuck on the wrong side of the canal; definitely zoom in on any canal junction and make sure your path is on the bridge side lol.

Camping is not permitted on most of the levees in south florida, it is also not very practical. Miles of exposed levees, very tall grasses, no room off the side of the road before it slopes into the water, and most accessible flat spots seem to be claimed by gators. There were very few sites that could be passable even as an emergency campsite in Palm Beach and Broward Counties. I got lucky with a recently abandoned plot that had been used to store construction equipment. The site was tucked out of sight so no one seemed to notice. South of US-41 there are more possible options. I would suggest reaching out to the airboat tour centers and asking if they would allow a tent to be pitched on their property.

A1A rides really require a lot of google street view research to figure out which sections to ride for your desired enjoyment.

@@TheHavnmonkey This is why I thought your route (bypassing all the cities and traffic) was so cool, and it's kind of disappointing to realize that there aren't that many places where I can pitch my tent. I know the Warmshowers and hotels option is there, but I prefer the tent (always being respectful, of course). A1A doesn't seem to be a good choice for that, does it? The other option I'm looking at is to go more inland (say 827) or even on 41 through the Everglades, up 29, around Lake Okeechobee, and so on. I know it's longer but perhaps more interesting, and I see a few campgrounds along the way. In any case, I appreciate all the information you've given.

@@TheHavnmonkey , so I just finished my Miami to Orlando trip. @TheHavnmonkey 4 жыл бұрын
The problem with US-1 is that it is not exactly continuous (it shifts several times to different roads) and it gets very congested with traffic as you near Miami. In several places the right of way is almost non-existent so your elbows almost touch passing cars and large vehicles. If you are wanting an urban adventure US-1 / A1A would be the route to take. I just didn't want to deal with that until Florida City.

I was actually a little worried about it beforehand. I took a nap at the park on the north side while i was waiting for the camp site to return my call on availability. My tires are tubeless so I was only worried about big pieces of glass and metal. I had a nice tailwind so I was cruising pretty fast and wasn't getting blown around. The shoulder lane was pretty wide and surprisingly clean. Didn't have any vehicle scares at all. I'm sure it's not always as uneventful as i got it though. My advice would be to time it with a tailwind, avoid the rush hour, and this last one applies to the separate pedestrian bike lanes on the other bridges: watch out for fishing poles and hooks! I didn't have a problem but did see some unattended poles and a few discarded lures and things that may have had hooks still attached.

word of caution about the everglades canal path... pay attention to which side of the canal to ride on, not all the sides have bridges to cross at the end. Very few places to camp if that is your plan, many sites that look good on google earth are either flooded, overgrown, or waaaaayyy to much evidence of large gators. Don't know where you plan on starting, but the last few miles in Broward (if you head west on the Conservation Levee Greenway, near W Atlantic Blvd / Sawgrass Expy) is realllly bumpy. My favorite section in the glades was probably the Edge of the Everglades trail about 7 miles south of the Miccosukee casino.

Amazing! Can I have a track route for this trip?

Hey, sorry for the delayed reply. I switched computers and don't think I have the exact track for this trip. But I may have another (very similar) route saved in my Ride With GPS account. I will check and see if I can share it.

From the satellite map view it looks more difficult than it actually is. I left the levee trail at the Sawgrass Recreation Park and headed south on US 27. The shoulder was pretty wide so it wasn't that bad of a ride. The key is to cross over to the southbound (west) side of US27 at the recreation park and then look for an old service road entrance about 1mi south of I-75. This road may be labeled "recreation rd" on google maps. Take that road back north toward I-75 and under the powerlines; it will loop back west and then south onto the L-37 Canal. This area is labeled "Andytown" on the map and is the site of an old town that was displaced by the highway construction. Once on the L-37 levee road you can go south through the Everglades Holiday Park down to Miami Gardens where you will head SW onto the L-30/L-31 Canal trail.

What bike are you on? Looks like some sort of gravel bike with some pretty dat tires. I’m already in Miami so I’m thinking my road bike will be fine. Great video, thanks.

I was riding my Motobecane Omni-Strada Pro... It's a gravel bike with 40c WTB tubeless tires. Not the best geometry for touring but it was good for a 300 mile ride. I would suggest at least 35c tires for this route along the everglades levees... A hardtail or rigid mountain bike (vintage even!) would be good too!

nice, can you mention how much of the route was bike lane vs shared w traffic

Since I rode on the Everglades levees, everything until Florida City was traffic free. From there to key largo (card sound route), I had to share the road but chose to do that section at 4am to avoid traffic. I was surprised by how much of the route from key largo to key west was actually on bike paths. I'd say 85% was bike paths, more if the pedestrian sections of the bridges have been repaired since then. 7 mile bridge is wide unprotected shoulder, but can be sketchy during traffic or high wind.

My g/f met me down there and we stayed for the weekend before driving back up. It is possible to take the bus back to Miami and then take the Tri-Rail or Brightline train back north.

A 9:15 you go from US 1 in Homestead to Bass Ave in Key Largo. I would have liked to see the ride on Card Sound Rd. Did you actually travel that road or stay on US 1?

I took card sound round into Key largo at 4am. That section from homestead into Florida City was tough for me, 15mph headwind and loose gravel road at the end of the day really did me in. Found a hotel and crashed out for the night. I wanted to video in the morning but was just too tired until after sunrise. Only had a few cars pass me on card sound and it was pitch black with no moon. Very enjoyable ride that early in the morning.
