Thank you for the video. A very common issue, then throw in a salt water submergence. My last stuck seat post was in a Schwinn KOM KING OF the Mountain. Took me four hours but no damage to the frame. Time well spent.

Bikeman & Team, great job! Everybody that has ever done this work, knows how hard stuck parts are. Similar stories and dramas with stuck bottom brackets, pedals, stems and sometimes also headsets and even wheels/axles. Where do the problems start? Bike manufacturers and assemblers put parts on bike frames dry - without any grease. Why? To save time and money. They forward the problems to the bicycle dealers and customers. Bicycle manufacturers and assemblers are only interested in selling new bikes. But the quality of bicycle is also a lot about mounting/assembling quality. Grease belongs to the mounting quality. On a naked frame without the mounted parts greasing is a matter of seconds or a minute, but makes a big difference. Not greasing when bicycles are manufactured/built means not respecting actually good parts and also not respecting customers. Not greasing means wasting resources and materials. Not greasing means that dudes like Bikeman, his team and many other people that work with bicycles have big hassles and struggles with stuck parts. How much money can they ask from customers for stuck parts? We are discussing all the time about the pollution of the environment, climate change and so on, but big companies just keep on wasting. They don't care. Always greed and money are the bottom line. In the year 2021 the demands of bicycles are way bigger than the supply of the manufacturers. This means: Very, very little or no grease at all on bikes from manufacturers. Just check all the parts that you can as a customer.

My recommendation would have been to remove the bottom bracket cause you have to over haul or replace it anyway. Next, cork the seat post and fill the seat tube from the bottom with your favorite penetrating fluid or anti-corrosive.

two ideas I have. 1- locate another tube or solid rod that has a slip fit inside the inner tube. if those are out of round at all, the corrosion inside that's already filling the gap will only seize more. filling the tube with something to prevent the slightest crush out of round would save the exponential increase of necessary Force to twist it. 2- the corrosion isn't a solid welding, it's granular. I might try a rod down the tube then a clamp similar to your stand clamp. vise grips may work too. use the crotch of a tie rod adapter for your air hammer and work it back and forth spraying that sauce and flushing it regularly. just my two cents.

Put something in the tube like a shisel or metal tube that fits snugly so you don't crust the post with the pipe wrench. Might get a better grip.

I was told you should drill a hole through the seat post, pass a strong rod half way through the post to give you leverage (like this +), and twist the post out, with one person on each end of the rod.

Chain is least of the worries. Flooded by salt water? Freehub internals are going to be completely toasted. Bottom bracket is also going to be trashed and need replaced. Hubs are going to need fully reconditioned (repolishing the races the bearings roll on to remove rust) and new bearings. Headset is going to need new bearings and reconditioned as well. Don't forget addressing linkages of the derailleurs and brakes, or the internals of the shifter mechs. And then finally new cables all around.

If the plan is to scrap the seat post anyway, why not drill a hole straight through it and use a long bolt or metal rod to try to rotate the post until it's free? Just an idea.

To remove the seat-post you should first remove the bottom bracket assembly then install an appropriate length of all-thread down through the seat-post until it projects into the bracket opening. Then install a steel washer that is slightly smaller than the seat post tube's inner diameter then install a pair of locking nuts (steel) to support the washer. Then apply a large steel washer over the upper end of the all-thread and simply snug down the upper nut and make gradual applications of half-turns to the upper nut until the seat's pipe is forced to relent as the force applied will be both linear and constant. ATF in the inner pipe and a hair dryer applied to the outer pipe should ensure success. With some patience this system is virtually infallible. Go with coarse, or acme threads for best results. Any short length of pipe to surround the all-thread at the top will allow the seat-tube enough room to slide against the inside wall of the seat-tube when the pressure is allowed to work.

Bikeman I think you were close with Air Chisel but wrong tool. If I had a drill press I would take an Impact Socket that fits over the seatpost and drill a hole that a bolt could be passed through. Then put on seat post and use as a guide to drill hole in seatpost. Insert short bolt passed through and then connect Impact Hammer. The twisting and mini-impacts of the Impact Hammer should be perfect to bust loose the seatpost impacting like you could not by hitting hammer & wrench at the same time.

This is precisely the method used by the Bike Guy here Yes. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hl68oaB6rZ1pmpI I have a 28mm socket on order but drilling a hole through hardened steel is not going to be easy without a proper bench drill. I only have hand held drills. Ah right they are called " drill press"? I don't have a drill press either. Maybe a local workshop will drill the hole for me.

I think all you have to do is hammer the seat post down until the vibration breaks the rust free from the tube. All these other methods are just destroying the bike. I think you want the rust to stay dry when hammering, so I would not use any penetrant.

why dont you try to bend the sides of the seat post? its more leverage on the stuck pieces.

Perhaps a cut piece of screwdriver shank placed against the tube and squash the tube in with a vice, The harder steel will crush into the tube and due to the ductile nature of metal it should squash in lower down the seat tube and should be easier to remove

Take your other bike to an old fashion plumbing company. Ask them to borrow their 36 inch pipe wrench. You probably will be able to loosen the seat post without much trouble at all given the superior leverage.

Yes. The Bike Guy on KZbin kzbin.info/www/bejne/hl68oaB6rZ1pmpI drilled through an impact wrench socket in a cross configuration (one hole may be enough) and bolted it to the sawn off seat post and used a 1/2 inch impact wrench (mains type) and took it off in no time. He used masonry drill bits to drill the wholes but I think it is gong to be difficult for me to drill through a socket. 18v rechargeable impact wrenches cost about 100 usd but I think it would work on many posts. I have a 28mm socket on order. If I can drill a hole through it I will order the wrench.
