Thanks. 😊 It’s a pretty neat area thats for sure. We usually have no snow 363 days of the year locally, but have had unusual weather. Im not risking another crash.

Count me as one of your international fans. I enjoy your videos immensely and agree entirely with what you said in episode 6 I think about taking you for what you are. I am on the uphill side of fifty and not svelte either but love being out on my bike. It is harder to lose yourself in jolly old England perhaps but great fun trying. Thanks for sharing - in these lock down times it is nice to have an adventure even if it is someone else's. Take care.

Amazing diversity on Vancouver Island! Pedals are a critical piece of gear. On my last trip one of our friends had a wonky pedal too. Fortunately, we were able to get a replacement set in a nearby town. I’m considering keeping a new set just for big remote trips along with a new chain. Looking forward to the next video👍

Thank for the comment! One can’t prepare for every mechanical failure but we can be pretty ingenious in overcoming problems. The trip series is actually all on mainland BC and not on the island. BC itself has an amazing range of geography & biodiversity.

Nice video! You do good work editing! You’re a risk taker, no helmet riding lol. I’m too old for another serious concussion!
@SaltyBeard_Adventures3 жыл бұрын
It’s funny that this particular trip I started taking my helmet off on easier back roads and long climbs. And to be honest I can’t really say why. On the first few days it was purely the heat. I do have to say, the GoPro makes it look your riding faster than you really are. I’ve had a few massive concussions and helmets saved me. Bad move on my part. I can’t change what I did on this trip, but I can change what I do on future rides. Thanks for voicing that.

I like the bells! I travel fairly populated trails and they would be useful especially during COVID. How do you have them set up?
@SaltyBeard_Adventures3 жыл бұрын
Bells are to let the bears know I’m coming down the trails. But I could see the use for COVID if your on bumpy trails. Bear bells are just Velcro’d on to my fork bags but you can put them on anywhere. Checkout @ 6:52 into this episode: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5bcmKdqq9-Gfpo

Another inspiring video! When doing your proposed route and you come across gates like In this video are the landowners typically okay with entering their land so long as your mindful of closing up behind you. I feel like this would sketch me out, lol or do you effectively have the right of way as a passer through in Canada?
@SaltyBeard_Adventures3 жыл бұрын
It totally depends on the area your in... in general, if it is locked or is posted private property then DO NOT trespass. However a great deal of land in Canada is Crown land (owned by the government) and its leased to ranchers to graze cattle. Gates are unlocked, but you MUST leave them as you find them. And ensure you’ve closed them properly. There are some special cases where the road access is public (the only way to connect roads) but all the land is private... if I don’t know the area I do a lot of research before hand, but I’m quite familiar with route I was on.

loved this trip! can i ask how you did the flyover map sequences? was it using stamens watercolour maps with adobe after effects somehow?
@SaltyBeard_Adventures3 жыл бұрын
The maps are all painted by hand, and I use DaVinci Resolve for all me editing, so the animation & flyover is built in Fusion. It’s a bit much for my older Mac laptop and takes an entire evening to paint, animate, and render that 15sec map.
@scwhatl3 жыл бұрын
@@SaltyBeard_Adventures yeah man i know how long rendering and animating and all that takes. add to that handpainting as well! great job!! i truly appreciate the effort.

Do you wave to the car and lorry drivers when they past because they slow down for you or are you just being friendly and saying hi? Greetings from the UK
@SaltyBeard_Adventures3 жыл бұрын
95% of big trucks do slow down. I used to haul and know time is money so I don’t mind the dust... they are working hard to make a living. I wave to just say “HI” - you never know when you may need a trucker’s help on the road or trail. And they have radios to pass along your whereabouts to other trucks. Be kind to all that you meet on the roads and trails. I like to think that good karma will come around.

Hello Rob. I'm a new sub and just binged watched (over a few days!!) all of your episodes, including the latest series in Northern Vancouver Island. I enjoyed them very much and especially appreciate the knowledge of the area you have. The videos are expertly crafted and as informative as they are enjoyable to watch. I've sent the link to your series to a friend who shall be bike packing Northern Vancouver Island this summer. Looking forward to seeing more of your travels. I'd like to do a BP trip in this area one day and wonder whether it is possible to just sleep in a motel in a small town, instead of camping. I don't have all that gear and would also rather not carry it, especially given that I live in Eastern Canada. Perhaps you could do a video addressing that question, on the map view in the video.
@SaltyBeard_Adventures2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for all the praise (blush). Yes, you can sleep in motels, however, in the northern remote towns, they are slim to none in some. Also check Air BnB in those locations. While I could ad this information in my RWGPS maps, it's best to utilize google maps when researching these areas. Each of these towns also have their own websites with up-to-date information ~ check them out too, including Tourism Vancouver Island. Various hotels open and close during the year for various reason, and some did not survive the pandemic.

The question is how many extra km you did to get some of those shots?

Filming adds about 10-15% more distance & elevation, and can sometimes double your ride time.

Would you ever consider Rene Herse tires for a trip like this?
@SaltyBeard_Adventures3 жыл бұрын
I haven’t ridden their tires yet, but the knobby version looks like a pretty good treat pattern available in a good variety of widths. I personally would not run the slick one unless I was running mostly road. I currently run maxxis Ikon 2.2 for my really rough trips, but I’ve also taken my Specialized Pathfinder Pro into some brutal rocky conditions with rigid forks. They’ve surprised me.

You get the prize for the first person who noticed I had a helmet mount, but didn't show any helmet views. In all reality, I used it a few times, and didn't quite like the footage and ended up not using it. In my defence, I only got my GoPro a week before this trip, still learning. Most of the times, I forgot I had the mount up there too! LOL
