Hi Ben and Tiff, we have just stumbled across your channel and are really enjoying catching up on your escapades. May i ask, what is the bag/backpack, that you strap to the rear rack? Hope you are still enjoying wonderful adventures, wherever you are, Neil & Maria x

@@wheelingfree Are there any bears in this area?
@wheelingfree5 жыл бұрын
2allure There are but we never saw any and we are used to dealing with them back home in Alaska. IMHO it’s a matter of getting educated about best practices, I wouldn’t let it stop you.

@@2allure There is quite a lot of Brown bears in sLOVEnia (well there is 500-600 bears but this means they are the largest (most dense) population in Europe). It is quite ulnikely to meet bears traveling northwest from Ljubljana...

Really loved your video and can’t wait to see the others. Are fat bikes good for touring, as it seeks like you are pushing a lot extra? Also May I ask what camera you use? (BTW I grew up in Anchorage but married a California girl who liked it better here in So Calif)
@wheelingfree2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mark! Right on, always fun to have the Alaskan connection! The cameras we used were actually just iPhones and gopros. The fat bikes were great for opening up off-road possibilities, but yes came with a trade-off of being pretty slow.

We did a little bit of wild camping but also stayed in lodging and Couchsurfing spots. I’m sure you can find places along the way if you stay open!

nice vids guys. are you still on your adventure? we are doing part of this trail in may next year but not looping back to the capital instead heading down into Pula in Croatia for some deepwater solo climbing. then doing a day mission across switzerland

Sounds like a great trip! Sorry for the late reply, we are still traveling but changing gears soon for a sailing gig we got offered.

Great videos! What brand are your backpacks? I like the how you have the option of wearing it or carrying it on the bike. Seems very practical
@wheelingfree5 жыл бұрын
FatTraction Thanks! Yeah it’s great having the option (perfect size for a carry-on flying, too!) The only downside is having to wear it occasionally on technical single track so it doesn’t break our aluminum racks. Upgrading to steel racks would take care of that issue. We just picked up whatever 30L waterproof packs we could in Australia - Tiff’s is a Seal Line which has held up really well, mine was an Amazon knockoff that’s falling apart now :P
@FatTraction5 жыл бұрын
@@wheelingfree Thanks for the info. Have you broken a rack before or are you just bring careful? I've got an aluminium rack and haven't had a problem yet. I am thinking of getting a new rack for my fatty. Either the tubus fat rack (steel) or the axiom fatliner (alloy) which has a bigger platform and is actually rated for more weight (50kg/110lbs!!)
@wheelingfree5 жыл бұрын
FatTraction Nice! Yeah that could work well. I’ve broken aluminum racks on other bikes, but not on these yet. Maybe the fat tires absorb a lot more of the shock to the point where it’s negligible, though we run on max pressure (30 psi) when we’re on pavement. I’ve wondered the same about Tiff’s aluminum frame, because it sure does help her having a lighter bike. Maybe it also helps that we try to keep as light as possible. Usually we only carry 10-15kg/each depending on how much food we’re carrying.
@FatTraction5 жыл бұрын
@@wheelingfree 30psi!! Thats crazy high pressure for a fat bike!. I run 12 - 15psi on paved roads and 5 - 10psi offroad. Most fat bike rims are only rated to max 20psi. What tyres are you running? My Schwalbe Jumbo Jim's roll incredibly fast at 10 - 15psi. Some cheaper fat tyres are slow at any pressure.
@wheelingfree5 жыл бұрын
FatTraction Haha yeah it’s the max pressure rating on our Surly Larry’s. We drop them way down to 10-15psi as soon as we hit gravel. Still figuring out what works for us :)
