As a 65 YO cyclist, actually just getting back into cycling after being a committed commuter, joyrider, and bike packer in my youth, I find your content inspiring and relaxing, I love your style from the camera work and narration, to the music. The one thing I would like some more info on is your bike and setup. Some particular areas of interest are gadgets and charging, how your bike is geared, any non standard kit like pedals, bags, clothing, and camping gear. Thanks for all great content!

Thank you for sharing! Came on this because I wanted to learn from bikepacking. We (me and my friends tried lakeland 200 in june 2022 so that gives me some reference. By then we stayed overnight at hostels and inns. And we had some beautiful sunny days. Nevertheles it was brutal and we skipped some of the hardest parts. But it still will be one of my most intense and beautiful biking experiences

OMG. So you hiked out of ennerdale up onto fleetwith (which if you’d carried on comes down onto honister pass) came back down and went over scarth gap (the route but unrideable) and then back up honister. Brutal!! Fair play fella, if nothing else you’ve had some amazing training for the HT550, which must be lining up to do this summer (you’ve done everything else in the country!) another top video, thanks for sharing

Komoot was on my phone for a few days and then I gave up on it and went back to the old man’s solution - OS maps! If following someone else’s route, I plot the whole thing on to an OS map app manually. I’m currently between apps. I used to use ViewRanger, which was excellent, and a nice big phone rather than a Garmin or Yahoo. I feel that plotting everything on to a map, rather than downloading a file, helps me to understand the route and also builds anticipation. In the case of the Lakeland 200, it would have stopped me from trying the official line. The mapped line doesn’t have the promise or logic of, say, the Highland Trail 550 as a holiday route for an adventurous cycle tourist (and there are bits of the HT550 I’d avoid on my trusty Thorn). But, having seen your reaction to the Lakeland 200, I’m seriously impressed by finding out that the FKT is less than 17 hours. I regard you as an exceptionally strong cyclist so that other guy must be an absolute beast!

it was a bit my fault really because i had the route for ages then on the way up on the train i decided to go the other way round so i just reversed the route, but the route i had had started in a different location so when i reversed it it mixed up the number points. hard to explain. Yeah it's an impressive time for sure if i ever have a normal Mtb in the future i will give it ago on an unloaded bike to see what sort of time i could do it in. There is a lot of start and stop with making these videos. i reckon maybe 18/20 hours sorta time possibly with the right bike and a bit of luck.

I’ve had the ‘reverse and divert’ route with komoot a few times. Annoying. And then you flip it back again and it normalises again. It’s a frustrating app for England anyway because it doesn’t differentiate the multiple RoW levels we have. I also used to be a Viewranger user. until they forced changed, shut down the app and became a komoot copy sub service. I’ve gone straight to the source now and use the OS app. If I’m having to subscribe for decent mapping I’ll stick with the folks that produce it for everyone else. It’s not too dissimilar in feel too Viewranger

Great video. I was aware you had to be careful with the Komoot "match to known routes" but reversing an existing route would surely have caught me out too, worth watching just to learn this. Sorry you had to learn the hard way but hopefully that means I don't have to. Thanks!

I was considering this a couple of years ago, but hearing peoples views on it and including yours, I think I am going to give it a swerve. I love a challenge and have done some massive challenges, but the amount of hiking involved in this route just doesn’t grab my enthusiasm. Love off road adventures, but like you said, more an achievement that a great memory 😂

I live in the Lakes. Definitely wouldnt use anything less than a full suspension mtb for that route! Hope the views made up for it. PS Keswick has a silent W ✌😎

Great terrain that you traversed and quite technical (excellent job!). Hiking a bike can be a pain, but unfortunately getting our butts handed to us is all part of bikepacking/bike touring. I really enjoyed this episode. Looking forward to catching up with the rest of your videos. Cheers!

Black Sail Pass on a bike packing trip! Who comes up with these routes? And do they ride them or just plot it on a map? We'll done for finishing. High Street is great but only on a full suspension. Keep up the good work.

Done this ride a few years ago with 6 friends. Awesome route but you have to accept you are going to need a full sus and will walk some of it. Black sail pass over to the yha hut was tough but amazing adventure! I have watched this video and it brings back great memories! Would love to do it again!

What a fabulous ride! Only recently found this channel. It popped up on my feed as I've been looking at bikepacking posts. This really is a great channel, and I'm definitely inspired by you to have a go st bikepacking. How do you get on with those bars; are they Jones H-bars? Really like the look of them..what made you make that decision, if you dont mind me asking!? The lake at 4min is obviously Lake Windermere (and Bowness), I take it? The reason why I ask is I'm an Aussie and spent the UK summers of 2002 and 2003 mtn biking all over the Lakes District will working in Bowness. The best time of my life and have so many wonderful memories. Still trying to get back there with my bike! Is the Lakeland 200 route available online anywhere? Thanks, Loz from Oz.

I enjoyed watching the vid. Thanks for your efforts to film it. Unfortunately I have experienced much of what you suffered with in my bikepacking experiences. I enjoy hard work and suffering. But ultimately I go bikepacking for a holiday, not a pure suffer-fest where every step is un-funny (like carrying the bike on your back up a number of climbs which you cannot even push it up!). But it seems like a lot of the guys who plan these routes aim for really tough, technical, unpleasant lines. Fine if you were just out riding for the day on a lightweight XC bike, but definitely not fine with the gear you have to carry bikepacking. I have even ended up short-cutting sections just to try and keep to a schedule when I have a train to catch at the end (a whole 50 miles a day, hardly unreasonable). I certainly wont be trusting other people's routes again when bikepacking. I'll be analysing them and picking the lines I want. I think we need to sort out some of these so-called 'famous' routes and do sensible lines for them. I'll be uploading my alterations when I do them and hopefully others will do the same and these stupid routes can disappear over time. Perhaps the people who create them will also start being a little more sensible but that's unlikely. All the best mate!
