I've just watched the video of the 2021 Fred Whitton Challenge. You both passed me on the summit of Honister Pass. The weather was changeable to say the least. Despite the Weather, the Brutal Climbs & Sketchy Descents in the wet I loved it. This was my 3rd Assault and even though you wonder why you put yourself through it, the Accomplishment of crossing the finish line makes it all worth, I'll definitely apply again for 2022 🚴 😁 🚴‍♂️ 👍 🚴‍♀️

Maximum respect for completing it 3 times, 68Baldy ✊✊✊ - thats a sensational achievement. I loved the day and the accomplishment - and like you say coming into the finish at Grasmere is a very special moment indeed 💯👌 I’ll likely wait a year or 2 before going for it again😅. Always a pleasure to hear from you Tony 💯 - and that’s a super super kind compliment thanks 🙏. Yes it was the selection of climbs - with the sheer gradients allied to the distance and the range of different weathers that made it such a challenge - and at the feed stop before Hardknott - I thought I was not going to make it around 🥶. Thanks for this, great video and I love the on-screen graphics. For anyone thinking of doing the Fred Whitton, a bit of a heads up. As I'm sure you know, GPS calculated gradients are very inaccurate once the road gets steep. There are stretches of all these climbs which are WAY steeper than shown on screen, well over 25% and even over 30% in places. Very important for us cyclists who are north of 85kg - I need well over 350 watts just to keep moving forward on Hardknott 😕
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy 3 жыл бұрын
Our pleasure Robin 💯 - and thanks ever so much 🙏. Very good points you make - because there is always a lag in the gradient shown on screen vs the one in real life - and for sure some of them are steeper - plus hard to traverse given loose gravel / moss / damp . Sustaining 350W up that demands max respect Sir ✊

Or is it just a standard gearing ?
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy 3 жыл бұрын
@@jemjones563 Lee stuck me on the front to hit some tempo in and out the saddle for the 10km to Hardknott - and that got the blood warmed up just in time….. the flats to give some recovery. I never change the gearing. The Colnago is a Compact on the front and a 32 on the rear, whilst the Wilier is a 52:36 on the front and a 30 on the rear. I reckon both more than meet my needs - including on the flat. The Wilier gearing was perfect for Marmotte - never ran out of gears. And was just as good on the super steep stuff for the Fred as the Colnago with the 32 on the rear. If I was focussed on flatter crit races with sprints, I’d run a shorter rear derailleur and a 28 on the back.

Brings back memories of doing ‘The Fred’ back in 2017. Great day. Thankfully it was dry, I imagine it would be a bit grim in the wet. Some of those roads were an eye opener, especially the descents, seen nothing like that anywhere else in the UK or abroad for that matter. If you come off you’d be in a world of hurt, which as it happens seems to be fairly common.

Thanks Tony 🙏 -that’s super kind of you 👍 And glad we got you on film 💯. I think my biggest tip is the one I discussed on Hardknott - you need the bursts of power out the saddle to get up the steepest ramps on Honister, Newlands, Hardknott and Wrynose - so the 60:30s and 40:20s are helpful. As is getting practice in on the steep stuff. The recce I did with Lee on some of these climbs (over 2 different days) helped me realise the gravity of the task. And then building the base fitness was the final element. Also riding with someone the whole way around it a big help - moral support 👍
