Just got my NBD 5S1 Ihad a very light weight road bike (15lbs) but after major ankle surgery my calf had no muscle mass and pedaling became hard virtually impossible. This Tern saved the day for me. When I test rode it, I thought yippee..today I took it out on the road through my community and did some hills and it was so great not having to struggle or breathe hard. Thank you Tern for getting me back on the road again…

Like the comparison at the end. Just today, I met a friend who rides a Vectron and we put his Vectron right next to my HSD and they are pretty comparable (length nearly the same, same handle bar, rack pretty similar) Just the seatpost angle differs and the Vectron has the folding mechanism and thus less loading capacity. I didn't expect the Vectron to be that big and that capable of carrying stuff.

Great video, I'm 5'2" and 57 y/o I was sold a large bike as a "small frame" bike with 29" wheels, If I was younger and fitter I'm sure it would have been fine, but I feared riding it. I thought I'd get used to it which I did, but had to use the kerb when stopping and starting as I couldn't lift myself off the seat to stop quick enough. The fear never went away due to the size and not being able to touch the ground while stopped. Lowering the seat which gave me sore knees. This is a great review and the dimension of seat height from ground helped me decide, I'll do a test drive. Explaining the 8i and 5i good as I'd assumed the 8 was better.

Sold my HSD S8i for an NBD S5i. The NBD is the only ebike that I know of that has a suspension seapost low enough where both of my feet can still touch the ground (i am 5'1"). I think i'll miss having front suspension forks - but what I actually needed was the suspension seatposts. I feel like the NBD rides better for me.

What I'm looking for is a cargo bike where the seat can be raised to the most efficient pedaling position while still letting me put both feet on the ground from the seat when stopped. That way I can brace a heavy load securely without dropping the bike. I have a Mongoose Envoy that I've heavily modified to bring the seat back and down, and I've still dropped it twice when I couldn't climb down the mountain in time. It's a ridiculously tall bike.

This is my dream bike. Even though I don't meet any of the targeted riders (short, limited mobility, new rider, etc), it's the only bike that meets the criteria I'm looking for: 20" wheels, internal gears w belt drive, step thru, plenty of cargo, not too heavy.

Great overview of the new model. I’m pondering getting this as I approach moving to my first ebike. Wish there was a dealer closer, but maybe if there are more folks buying them around me, someone else will sign up. I appreciate your obvious caring about the customer experience, as outlined by your opening story. It’s hard to recommend things for family and then see them not work out. Glad your relative is still getting out on gas-free wheels!

Thank you, Arleigh. You've clarified a few points for me, particularly the distinction between the HSD and Quick Haul. A question relevant to the models mentioned in this video: do all models have the same weight capacity for the front end of 40 or so pounds?
@BikeShopGirl2 жыл бұрын
Glad it was helpful! Yes, the CMT has the same limits on all bikes. Some handle the front weight better in riding and steering due to the head tube angle but all are capable!

Hi Arleigh Watching a lot of your videos and pretty much enjoyed them all. One of your videos you loaded your Tern into your van. I’ve seen one Brompton video where she loaded her bike into a smart car or maybe 2 bikes. I would love to see as part of your video whether you can fit a NBD or Vectron into a car or wagon like a Subaru? Don’t really see other videos by others do this?
@BikeShopGirl Жыл бұрын
The vektron fits in the trunk of a small car :) the NBD would require you to lower the seats

Which one would be best for a commercial driver, who wants to have a folding cargo ebike I keep in my truck for times I have to spend overnite out on the road, but would like have something I can ride to a nearby restaurant for dinner. I also live about 8 miles from where I park my truck every night and maybe I could just use it to commute from home to my truck everyday and just leave the car at home?

Thanks for the review. I like the Vectron, concerned about getting oil/ grease from the chain, on my pants. Does TERN have a "grease guard" for the Vectron, it looks like it was put on the NBD bike.Thanks.
@BikeShopGirl10 ай бұрын
The NBD is an internally geared drivetrain which makes the chain or belt in a fixed position allowing for this fully enclosed chain guard.

Will the Gaia rear rack accommodate an MIK adapter plate for mounting a Basil Buddy dog carrier? That might be a workaround for carrying a small dog (or cat) on the NBD.

Thank you, Arleigh! Great video! Look forward to test riding the NBD. It has all the features I’m looking for in an e-bike. Currently I ride the HSD. Another reason why I’m excited about the NBD is it weighs less than my HSD.

I like the NBD, it fits well in an RV, but with no suspension I miss a bit of riding comfort. I think I go with the Tern HSD S5i, that has suspension fork and seat and the comfortable automatic shifting 😁

Having recently lost by driving license due to failing eyesight but still wanting to get about, can I buy a TERN NBD Vectron in Scotland, as I live at the top of a pretty steep hill and pedalling up with a conventional bike would be useless, so need an EV Bike. Can you help?

It is a nice bike, and I know people for whom it would work very well including myself, but it is definitely on the expensive side. The price could be fairly easily lowered with a few changes. The display could be changed to the entirely adequate Purion display. Also, come out with a derailleur bike. It is much less expensive and again, entirely adequate and actually easier to service. I do see a major flaw in the design. The chain guard is very badly done. It looks to be the worst of all worlds. The last bike I had used a Nexus 8 but it had a fully enclosed chain guard. It worked great. I used a heavy oil and because it was fully protected I only had so clean and lube it twice a year. Never had a problem and I had that bike for 13 years with one new chain. The chain guard on this bike is not fully enclosed as the whole back side is open, but it also looks to be very difficult to service. On a bike like this I would want to service the chain every two hundred miles but from what I can see it looks to be very difficult to get to it. Perhaps it could be stood up and gotten to from the other side but that remains to be seen. From what I can see a simple clean and lube of the chain looks to be a major hassle.

I’m getting a little tired of Tern announcing products so far out from when they’ll actually hit your local market. Maybe wait until someone sees the mythical short haul for sale before again teasing us. And while I’m a Tern owner and a major fan, $3,900 in the US for the lower end NBD when REI just released a $1500 same type of bike (Co-op Cycles Generation e1.1) available now is a big swallow.
@BikeShopGirl2 жыл бұрын
Hey Frank! The Short Haul has landed in Asia, and parts of Europe. North American containers are in route but going slow. The e1.1 is a cool bike but more of a rad power competition. The NBD is a very specific bike with mostly custom parts and design (hence the price) for smaller, newer, or folks limited mobility. I haven’t been able to see the e1.1 in person but it’s a hub drive motor, super high step thru, etc. It will be a fantastic bike for the right person but the NBD is targeting a different market. I also don’t think the e1.1 will available until this fall? You can just preorder on the website. We launched this new product specifically due to the largest bike show in the world is next week. If we don’t launch for that, there won’t be another international show for folks to touch and test ride before they arrive to dealers (and dealers want to test ride before ordering.)

I like that bike I do but I'm not crazy about folded handlebars. I'm not crazy about folded up bikes either but I do like this fight that you're just talking about in the commercial and I do know that you do have a water bottle holder if I had the money I would buy one but like I said I'm not crazy about folding up handlebars but I do like it that you got to rack on the back and you can mount a rack on the front to carry more stuff if you had to go to the store and I do like the red color but I wish you can make it all different colors for the bike right now I'm still on my Schwinn bike it's where you have to swing your leg over I like that bike it's just that I want something where I can step through without swinging my leg over cuz I'm not getting any younger and I would like to ride my bike more often but a lot of health issues and I would like to lose a little bit of weight. Oh one more thing make sure you tell your customers to always wear a helmet cuz they can save your life believe me when I say this cuz if it wasn't for me I won't be here today cuz I was in the bike wreck if it wasn't for the skateboard helmet I will probably be Six Feet Under cuz my head and hit the back of the road but it was not my fault though it was the driver's phone but that was back in the day
