I just won an ebay auction for a January 1981 Carlton Criterium for a fiver. It's in a similar condition as this Peugeot. This video has inspired me to restore it. It has all its original parts apart from the front wheel and saddle. Thanks for great restorations of old steel cycles. Iv'e just got to source a front quick-release hub as I already have a spare original rim to build the wheel on. Can't find an original saddle as yet. Thanks again for the inspiration.

What a masterpiece! One of the best restaurations of the channel so far. For me, this video summarizes two things: how resilient and extremely durable bikes can be and what is possible to do in terms of restauration when you have the pacience, the knowledge and the right tools to do the job. You guys are a huge inspiration for us!

I LOVE IT! Seeing how you removed those cogs with the two chainwhips was a new one on me. What a fabulous restoration.

Superb restoration job on a lovely old bike. Brilliant work. That BB spun like a perpetual motion machine. Level of polishing perfect to preserve the history of the machine. Ace workmanship. Thanks for this film.

I've paused this 37 secs in to make a comment. The most knackered one I've seen so far and it's going to look mint at the end I'd wager.

Greeting from Toronto, Ontario, CANADA. I'm not one to leave comments on most videos I watch on YT, but I have watched most if not all of your repair and restoration videos and I must say, YOU DO EXCELLENT WORK!!! I've learned a lot from watching you with your expertise and attention to detail, especially when you clean, grease, re-lube, and torque everything. I especially like your longer form videos such as this one where you really get into the nitty-gritty of making a bike almost as good as, if not better, than when it left the factory.

My favorite part of the restoration was the free wheel and how that turned out way better than when it arrived.

Those unsealed bottom bracket bearings always spin buttery smooth. It's almost obscene 😂. Forever a fan of yours even if I can't always comment. Thanks for the videos, exemplary consistency 🙏

What an interesting episode. I have to admit I have no love for the old bikes I had to ride some right rubbish but I could watch you all day. Nice touch continuing the bar tape right to the stem, looks good in white.

You did a great job on it, very inspiring. Loved the free wheel, looked totally different after.

Very nice Lee! It will live a good second life now. Maybe even get new rims and paint/stickers for a full refresh in the future.

That was a fun restoration, cleaned up nicely. Well done!! Makes me wonder how modern bikes will be a few decades from now, and if we'll still be able to clean those up just as nice (I have no clue how modern materials like carbons and plastics will age).

Great job! it must take a lot of hours to restore everything in details, especially the chrome on the rims which is not always preserved. At least the braking surface on these rims are very durable. Also there are many cases where people try to insert standard pedals (9/16 inch diameter) into old french cranksets like Stronglight (14 mm). It works but it is very hard to remove the pedals after.. I have one crankset arm like this where the pedal is still stuck.

Thats good old fashioned engineering right there, amd one heck of a restoration 🇫🇮😎 If this isnt an advert for lubricating your bike, then I don't know what is...

When you replace old bearings with new ones how do you know the size, or are all bearings the same size or diameter?
@malcraghill74 сағат бұрын
They come in different sizes. A mechanic's metal ruler will have holes in matching the bearing sizes.
@davidburgess74137 минут бұрын
That would be a Maillard freewheel from the sound! If the springs had been steel, you'd have been fabricating new ones. They'd have been powdery rust.
@JohnPilling254 сағат бұрын
Lee, that was fantastic. It's a pity about the rims. A quick question, what is the thread on the pedals and did you chase the threads on the bottom bracket.❤❤❤

Most 'modern' bike mechanics can't even disassemble a vintage bike like that, much less assemble one! Technology is both a boon and a curse!
