@@timmo3351 Hahaha, yes, and I'm one of those Pan America owners, but then again I'll get my fill of what it can do on the asphalt, this is not to say that with some tutoring I'd actually like to gain some offroad experience, I believe if nothing else, despite following a different technique, some offroad experience would improve on-road riding.

@adventuretoshare3 жыл бұрын
@@timmo3351 Pretty much; yes. It's actually difficult to find anything significantly negative given that it's a brand spanking new model.I guess the only irritation is the infotainment system; Boom Box was a little dated, but it had everything you needed and more recently Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (if memory serves me correct). We're both added, Apple and Android support ensures that there would only be a handful of ppl that might complain :-) I have both on my Jeep, so no matter if my wife or I am driving, we both have complete connectivity. I'm sure H-D have some master plan around their approach. I've worked out how to get full connectivity between my phone, headset and the handlebar controls, but I know it's going to be a big gripe from many ppl. Apart from that, it's an amazing machine :-)

The starter issue is related to when a cylinder is stopped right before top dead center. There is too much compression for the starter to turn the motor over in that particular situation. The starter therefore cuts out and once engaged again it will power the piston past that spot and start up.
@maxlane92103 жыл бұрын
That kind of makes sense, but why couldn't the starter just do that in the first place?
@scattass2 жыл бұрын
@@maxlane9210 because of the torque curve of electric motors and the way they engage. it stalls out disengages then because electric motors have a lot of torque at low rpms it is able to overcome the compression of the pistons. they will likely put a more powerful starter and bigger battery if it really bothers people or isnt long lasting because of size.

I traded in my Buell Ulysses for my new Pan America, the Ulysses absolutely had a HD motor in it. It was also a brilliant road bike and I could cover 800 miles in day on it easily, not so good off road. I just did a 500 mile day in massive rain storms on my Pan Am, at one point it was raining so hard I was the only thing still rolling on the highway. Even the truckers had pulled off. I can't comment on its off road ability as that isn't what I bought it for. So far I love it, we'll see how it holds up.

Hi Chris great video and review. You certainly gave it some stick off road. Something I am hardly likely to do at 70 years of age. Hope to collect mine next week having owned a couple of GS's previously. Even the Special comes out a fair bit cheaper than a 1250 GS which swayed me towards buying it. Just returned from Sykes our local dealer and had a great craic with Harley owners saying its not a real Harley. Something I remember being said to me by Pre Unit construction Triumph owners when I brought my 1969 Bonnie. What I should add its also my ticket to Harley meet ups in the UK & Europe. Let's hope they listen to the customers and continue to make the Pan Am better while also sorting the bugs out, I can't wait to see where H-D goes especially as long as they stay competitive with pricing and specifications. I've owned both. Sold my BMW to buy the Pan Am and have not been disappointed. BMW has some annoying traits that you did not hit on which have plagued the bike for years. Overall though, I thought your review was well done. The Pan Am is not perfect but neither was the BMW. I'm at 7500 miles now with zero issues. Overall what has impressed me most about the Pan Am is its ability to chew up miles without effort. What impressed me the least about the Pan Am and something Harley really needs to address is the size and placement of the rear tail light. Small and hard to see with full bags on the bike. Borderline dangerous. I rigged aftermarket LED's on my tail box to help with that. Otherwise, good scoot. 14 Reply

Ulysses was the last new Buell with the HD based engine. Only the later 1190 twins (sportbike and CR) had the outsourced engine. Great review of the Harley. Reaaaaaly impressed with the overall package for a first effort. It doesn't do much good in Europe, but in North America, the act of touring on a Harley is the insane dealer network. You can be hundreds of miles from a spare part for any other brand but you're rarely far from a harley shop and they take care of people who are traveling and have issues. I dont love their bikes but the reasonable price and mid-pack results of the Pan America make it a really compelling package for us in the U.S.

Great review great videography. Great job HD! Perfect street off-road balance for my riding. Love the KTM but going to buy the Harley. 36” inseam I don’t mind the bike height so I will take the lighter basic model plus get the light weight exhaust to trim fat. Shorten the Db reducer for a better sound plus extreme air breather then tune it. At 56 in great shape I still don’t hit the dirt jumps climbs trails as hard and aggressively as I did in my 20s. Still a speed freak just a bit tamer. I pin everything I ride from time to time and appreciate a good motor / suspension. I have a super local dealership. And as I adventure travel with it Harley has dealerships all over. This bike is going to be great fun.
