Biking New York: The Erie Canal Trail -- Pittsford to Chili

Our ride on this section of the Erie Canal begins at Schoen Place in Pittsford, NY. We travel through Genesee Valley Park where the Erie Canalway Trail meets up with the Genesee Riverway Trail and the Genesee Valley Greenway just south of downtown Rochester, NY Take care if riding straight through as the Lyell Avenue crossing is very busy, with poor visibility. This ride took place on October 23, 2020 and is about 20 miles round trip.

I love the information about the Canal! The Erie was begun actually in Rome and went west to Buffalo and east to Albany.

I couldn't agree more. We've lived near the canal most of our lives, but didn't really understand it's significance, or the engineering marvel that it is until we started our research for our channel. Thanks for the additional info.

We haven't completed the canal from SYR to Albany, but from my research it appears there are more canal artifacts on the SYR to BUF section. Hope you have a lot of fun!

Hi. The "Biking West Virginia -- The North Bend Rail Trail" video has the fall I was referring to here. That accident was all user error!! I was playing with my camera and hit a bump -- grabbed the front brake too hard and crashed. Went into a pile of rocks and gravel. I did something similar a few weeks before that -- "This trail was TOO MUCH for us! [New York State Ontario County Park], but at least I could say I was riding a trail I probably shouldn't have with the type of bike we ride!! Thanks for watching.

Hi. Did you get what you were looking for? The Erie Canal Trail is pretty flat, so I don't know that an ebike gives you much of an advantage. Some of the rail trails are more hilly (see Great Allegheny Passage) and there was certainly an advantage to an ebike when going 50 miles on a gentle uphill climb. Thanks for watching!.
