Biking Virginia: The New River Trail -- Episode 2 (Tunnels, Trestles and more -- Oh My!)

Southern Virginia's New River Trail is one of America's premier rail-trails. The trail parallels the scenic New River for 39 miles. Our trip went from Byllesby Dam to Galax, Virginia. Along the way you'll see many railroading highlights -- the 1,089 feet long Fries Junction trestle, the 670 feet long Ivanhoe trestle, a couple of tunnels and absolutely gorgeous river views. If you haven't been to the New River Trail State Park, maybe it's time for a visit! This ride was about 25 miles round trip and took place in October, 2020.

That was an absolutely amazing ride and the lunch (with beer of course) with two new friends made it even more enjoyable. The Hiwassee bridge, by the way, that we were told was closed, is open again and another amazing view. Thanks for the video!!!!!

how long did the bike ride take? Did you have a shuttle take you to the Dam so you can ride to your car in Galax? Looks super....

Hi. We parked at the Dam, rode to Galax, then rode back to the car. One note of caution -- you might not have cell signal when you leave the Dam. So we had to just guess where to go for a couple of miles until we connected with a cell tower!! It was a 30 mile round trip, and we stopped for lunch. So we were out about 3 hours I would guess. It was a beautiful ride. Thanks for watching.

Where did you put your bikes while at Macado's? Are they equipped with racks you can lock to while inside?

There weren't any bike racks. We just chained our bikes to a railing. Our friends didn't secure their bikes at all and no one bothered them. I'm too nervous to just leave them like that though. Thanks for watching. Hope to "see" you on the next ride.

At that campground on the trail, could RVs stay there?

Hi Liz. I can't say that I know if RVs can stay or not as we didn't camp. I believe there are several campgrounds in the area, so there is likely to be one that takes RV's. I know there is a campground in Fries that connects in to the trail, but no more than that.

Galax is pronounced “Gay Lax”. My family is originally from that area and my three older sisters were born in Galax
