On our way home we stopped in the village shop to pick up a few groceries, and my grandson proudly showed off his morning’s haul. 26:40 you're probably already aware, but in case you're not - you can clean out the leaves and gunk from the blueberries with a hair dryer. Simply put the berries on a flat tray or something with a non-steep lip or frame, then gently blow into them at an angle to blow away the lighter leaves and stems while (mostly) keeping the heavier berries on the tray.

I love bil(blue)berries. This reminds me of an interesting story about them. A few years ago, a friend and I went camping on an island that is almost entirely crown land, and access is only by private charter boat. We loved to camp and hike and picked a weekend. In my province, summer is about a month or two behind yours, we get much longer winters. So it was mid-august and a heat wave struck just as we setted out. During a hike on the island, we had to start rationing our water before heading back to camp, and became very tired and dehydrated. Just as fate would have it, a clearing by an old radar post had a huge and massive field of wild blueberries, as far as you could see. Perfect ripeness. I couldn't believe just how many there were, it was incredible. We ate many, and it gave us the energy needed to return to camp. I still hope one day to return there and pick more properly to bring home. There is nothing quite like wild berries.

In my neck of the woods (West Yorkshire) you often find cars full of people, picking berries like they are going out of fashion. However you and Jenny have introduced me to what would be a new twist to my diet, using a biscuit base. Locally it is more common than not to find bilberries served as the filling of a short pastry pie usually made in an old saucer, with a pastry lid and a dusting of granulated sugar added just before the end of cooking to partially melt it on top but to keep the grainy texture on top of the crust. Usually the saucer size of tart can be consumed either by a single individual and slightly less often it is shared between two people.😊

I went to Sweden in the summer a few years ago and some of the rural areas were very similar in their flora to our acid heaths in Wales and England! Bracken, mosses, heather, brambles and bilberries. But in the summer when it rained, it would clear up and the sun would come out and it would be bright and warm again. Here the rain usually precedes cold and grey weather that seems to go on forever. I don't know if that's similar to Denmark. You should come over and visit There's too many gorgeous places to mention 😊.

I'm actually from somewhere halfway down germany and going up those thousand-ish kilometers makes a whole world of difference, here it's super hot, sunny and dry. I actually really like how rainy and cold it gets in summer up there in comparison! My brother went to norway for two weeks last year and they were constantly getting rained on but wow was I jealous by how pretty that country is too... I went wild blueberry picking once in the Cascade mountains of Washington state in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. We saw a young black bear on the road going in about a quarter mile from our picking spot. The people who had invited me had never seen one before. We made a lot of noises as we picked to ward off any more bears (singing and talking loudly). They never invited me again thinking I was bad luck and attracted bears!

Looks like fun! Years ago, while visiting my grandparents on summer vacation, we would take a day and pick loads of blueberries on a hillside near their home. The land had once been part of my grandparent's farm so they knew where these plump, sweet berries thrived. Outfitted with our blueberry buckets, we'd scour the hillside, under the blazing hot sun, and pick our fill. When we got home, it was time to make blueberry cobbler with grandma, saving some berries for blueberry pancakes in the morning. A real treat was a simple dish of berries with a splash of cream and a sprinkle of sugar. Your and Jenny's pie looked delicious, a well earned reward. Thank you for bringing back lovely memories 🌸

Bilberries are very abundant here in the Austrian alps (they can grow quite high up too) and they are absolutely some of my favourite berries, there's so much you can do with them and they are so much more aromatic than any store bought (American) blueberry. Probably not as abundant here as in Scandinavia but still amazing, and if you don't want to collect them on your own local farmers often sell them too (they collect them from the wild) when they're in season (also freezing them works very well too if you want some outside of the season).

It was really good to see Jenny's face on camera at last. I'm very camera-shy as well so two thumbs up to her. I have an elderberry in my front garden that's more ornamental than fruit- bearing. It does have a few berries but I usually leave them for the birds. However, I have barberry, cotoneaster and pyrocantha for them so I might steal the elderberries for myself this year. I'm in the middle of replanting my back garden and you have given me so many ideas for that as well. I was already gong to have supercolumn apple trees (great for small gardens as they only need to be planted two feet apart), but now I'm having fuschias and honeyberries as well, thanks to your videos. The rest of the garden is going to be purely for bees and butterflies; hardy geraniums, lavenders and herbs. And probably catmint as we have two cats to please. Thanks again for your videos. I learn more from you than from googling.

When I was very young I had to wait a long time to get oil paints. My mom was worried I'd get it in the carpet, the cushions and everywhere else. Well I did, but it turned out to be much better than watercolor, because if you make a booboo, the paint is opaque, and all you need to do is mix the right color to cover the error, and voila! Gone. It turned out to be good practice for mixing and achieving the right colors, as well.

It never got cold enough for a deep freeze this winter, we didn’t get any snow beyond flurries, and now we’re in a drought, so the ticks this year are just the worst. 😵💫 If my son and I are kicking a soccer ball (football 😅) around in our yard- ticks. If I walk my dog and stay on the paved sidewalk- ticks. If I take my younger son to the playground- ticks. If I pick my tomatoes- ticks. Ugh.

This was so enjoyable, and so good to see Jenny... she's a treasure ❤. Have you ever picked Rowan berries? I make Rowan jelly every year, and we have it with cheese, roast lamb, roast pork, and roast turkey (just as good as cranberry!). I'd really love to see you make it and hear your ideas for using it😊❤

The twenty-third thing I'd do if they ever put me in charge of reality is delete the ticks.

I'm inclined to agree. There are probably unforeseeable consequences that might cascade from such an extinction, but that never stopped us with all the other things humans have wiped out. This one gets a pass I say.
