This man is the funniest writer I've ever read. I've never read anyone who makes me laugh like he can.

Haven't you read Sir P.G Wodehouse novels, I think he has written the funniest novels so far. I didn't find Byson that funny, but in Appalachian trail he was.

This chap has made me lose far too many hours of sleep than is good for me, reading far into the early hours of the morning because I simply couldn't put the book down. I'm very glad that I still have most of his titles yet to read.

Bill Bryson is in the absolute premier league when it comes to writing books. His work is unbelievably good & hugely entertaining. Plus one learns a great deal on many avenues of life - with all it's complexities, foibles and nuances - along with many fascinating facts involving history, archaeology, art, culture, geography - and many more besides. I cannot recommend his books to those yet to delve into them - in a more forthright soundbite than the simple 'read them all now - you will not wanna put em down cos they're brilliant !!' Thanx Bill for keeping millions of us totally enthralled by the power of your pen and typewriter (along with other electronic gadgety I dare say you've utilised for said purpose. Wishing you all the best. With wishes and peace to you & your family - may you be safe and content in all future endeavours. Hey ho. Rx

It's a beautiful book. And a testament to Mr Bryson for showing that a walk in the woods (ok the Appalacian trail) can be utterly absorbing

One of my favourite writers, certainly my favourite non-fiction writer! Makes anything interesting. He's even inspired me to start writing my own travel book, which I hope will read pretty similarly to his own work. Bravo sir!

William Roberts is a wonderful narrator, his voice is perfect for A Walk in the Woods! I haven't listened to Bill himself yet, but I will get to that soon.

Mr. Bryson...even if you don’t read this, Thank you, your ability to convey some of the most mundane facts (A short history of nearly everything) is a remarkable feat, that coupled with Your Ability to entertain us with fascinating and wonderfully subtle insights and antidotes makes all those stories (all your other novels) irresistible. So....Thank you again and May God bless you and all whom you hold dear.

+dustypork Yup , Bryson was born and raised in the US and didn't move to England till I believe he was in his early 20's so even though a person will take on some of the accent of an adopted nation the amount Bryson has I believe to be an affectation .

His books just work as an audible experience. I listened to Short History first read by Richard Mathews, then William Roberts then finally Bill himself, both the abridged and unabridged versions. Each one was a much different listening experience. and although both Richard and William are most likely trained narrators, it is nice to hear Bill tell his own tales. That's what got me into Audiobooks, and I'm very thankful indeed for that. I am looking forward to this one coming out, Cheers Bill !!

Bryson is the best non-fiction writer that I know. He can take on any subject, even boring sounding ones, and turn them into top-class entertainment. Fascinatingly, the only boring bit in each of his books is the title, e.g. "at home", daring the reader: "You want to bet that I can even make this topic exciting?" And of course he does!

This bloke writes science in such a way that is both captivating and understandable. William Roberts, the reader of ‘A short History of Nearly Everything’ makes it a bloody good listen too, with his wit 🇬🇧.

I am now reading my fourth Bill Bryson book, as much as possible in roughly the order in which he wrote them I can't wait to get on to the next one, he makes me laugh continuously, just my sort of humour.. My husband hates me reading in bed, as when I laugh, I rock the bed. This man is hilarious, and as suggested below, his voice is not at all as I thought.

The question is, does this guy record his audio book readings at this breathless speed and then they slow him down in post?! Perhaps cut back on the stimulants Bill and take a breath! Love this guy's books.

Yo, Bill: Writing is ONLY good if it sounds good, the ONLY way you can get a sense of how well the words flow, and especially important if you want realistic-sounding dialogue (a problem for most writers). I invariably SPEAK my books when I'm editing them.
