There are plenty of real-life stories Haley could have told and instead intentionally created a fiction, presented it as fact, and only admitted the truth when confronted about it. Ppl believed that this literally happened because he lied about it and garnered acclaim, not for "giving us an idea of how the game is played" as you might put it, but for giving a biographical account of his family history. You're essentially saying that a person is free to make up any and all details as long as the central position is represented, and that is a recipe for disaster
