Seeing Bill Hader go from funny characters such as Officer Slater and Stefon to tragic hitman Barry Berkman was astonishing to see him evolve as a performer. Comedic actors always make a seamless transition to dramatic roles, they nail it every time.

Yes, totally! I think part of this is because comedic actors are usually using comedy as way to deal with/hide a lot of pain or trauma and they excel in dramatic roles because they are proficient in COMMITTING.

@@taylorbernier7966 Yeah remember "acting is truth," "use it," "you don't have to know what child abuse is like, you just have to know what it's like to hurt someone," he really hurt someone and he's using it...duh? I mean I wouldn't have even wondered if it wasn't brought up 15 times as what acting is, and then it kinda went nowhere, for Barry, if not Bill Hader? Here's what it might be: "Can you give me ANYTHING?"--Sally to Barry, in that scene that won the Emmy, after he murders his old marine buddy, with the agent in the audience. The biggest literary agent in the world had requested my novel--the real "Tale of Scrotie McBoogerballs" from "South Park." The book that makes you puke, that's inexplicably REALLY good. Bill Hader was there, in the "South Park" writer's room. That was a parody of a real book--that's why that episode made no sense, and people still ask Google if it's real, somehow. I had mailed it to the voice of Towelie. "Guys, this is MY LIFE. I don't want to sue you. It's the coolest thing in the world you did a 'South Park' about my book. Salman Rushdie's agent requested it because this literary genius Stanford neuroscientist basically said 'I think it's like the best thing I've ever read?' like an idiot, like the episode. You guys are actually talented, these people are not, it means EVERYTHING TO ME. I love you. Can you give me ANYTHING?" Cold. Under orders, like the Macbeth scene from Season 1--"South Park" guys didn't want to get sued or then, have it be known they were dicks like that. Unfortunately there's a bunch of evidence they left behind... Scrotie dot Biz in your browser.

When you listen to all these interviews. You realize why this show was a masterpiece. Hader was not the typical entitled director that forced the vision when it did not work. He listened to his people and their meetings talking about the show and how people recall characters and seasons . He had a vested interest in making the show memorable from the perspective of the viewers and those who worked with him felt the same because he listened to them.

I think we can thank streaming services for pouring money into people's pockets to make content, it opened us up to a fresh new wave of creators not held down by the chains of nepotism. When Hollywood tried to keep up with the content overload they were forced to take the same strategy, and thus fresh voices became mainstream.
@JalenRawley

When you do such a great job of casting, half of your work as a director is already done. Great actors who understand their characters and it is coming from a creative place, not an ego centric place will always be able to help make course corrections that get the show to the right place. Bill often talks about how running your own sketches at SNL puts you in a director's role. Your working with all of the various departments and your ensemble cast, and there's a necessary efficiency that comes from allowing everyone to do their jobs. Taking that experience and applying it to projects that have the benefit of more time and budget really works well.

I think you maybe need to rethink your definition of Masterpiece. The first two seasons were great, but this last one was an f'ing train wreck. No amount of quarterbacking will change the fact that it, like seasons 3 and 4 of fargo, sucked.

@@jhardycarroll you must've been watching a different show because Barry couldn't have had a better ending in my opinion. People get tripped up because the characters don't change or do the hard things necessary to grow as a person. The ending feels deflated because no one learns their lesson and it's all bleak, but that's the whole idea. Barry is about living with the responsibility of your actions and embracing who you truly are, because trying to be something your not can drive you crazy.

Look, as Season 4 went on, it was clear the show was reaching greatness, but the standout, among stellar actors, was Stephen Root. His transformation to a pater familias gangster from Barry father figure and then instantly snap back to tender father figure when he heard Barry had a son was.... the way you could see the tenderness fill his eyes, even if nothing really changed... I was floored by that scene. And the way he covered the child in the shootout. Just wow. That moment took the show up to a higher level for me.

It’s crazy how continuous, non-cut shots have become such a mark of quality for filmmaking, back in the day people didn’t think about it nearly as much, I mean, you had the “Goodfellas” moment, but you’re starting to see it everywhere now whether Berry or John Wick, etc. It’s starting to become a cinematography standard for a mark of quality.
@HaveabananaProductions

i think this is because not only are long takes really difficult to pull off, but in a way they really put you in the scene like no other type of edit or shot, as any type of cut or edit reminds you that its a show/film. In some ways I see how it could be a mark of quality but i mostly see it as a challenge to achieve realism that is set by the filmmakers for themselves

For me, long non cuts should be the norm instead of a novelty. One of the scenes that I first think about is the diner scene in Scarecrow with Al Pacino and Gene Hackman. It was just two guys just talking. It didn't have or need 10 cuts for just two guys talking. Just leave the camera there and let the actors do their job.
