I Saw Bill Haley sing Rock Around the Clock live in 1955.

Wow, I was 17 years old living in Indonesia and never heard of Bill Haley, untill my brother came over in 1957 from Holland and he brought me some singles: Rock Around the Clock, Tuti Fruti by Little Richard and Heartbreak Hotel by Elvis.... After one month when he arrived the movie Rock Around the Clock was finaly in the cinema in Batavia/Djakarta.. I went 7 times to watch the film and to learn the Rock 'n Roll movements...what a great time for us.. ...every weekend there was a Rock n Roll party with our friends somewhere in town, with my Bill Haley and Little Richard singles... PS: My name is Frits van Swoll, this is my story! Great time those days! I still have emotional memories because of al my great friends from school I had. By by Batavia (Djakarta..)!

Haley and the Comets ARE Rock and Roll. I love all the brilliant folks who came before and inspired him, but when I hear the Comets or see them in these early films, I hear, see, feel, smell, and taste ROCK AND ROLL. It feels like a shaved and chopped two tone '50 Merc' with street neon signs reflecting off the paint and chrome. Beautiful! Long Live Rock and Roll.

Hey, that scene has got to be from the movie “Rock Around The Clock” featuring Bill Haley and the Comets; it hit the silver screen in 1956. The band was on their way to being the Kings Of Rock And Roll until some kid from Tupelo, Mississippi by way of Memphis blew their doors off and they were consigned to the oldies circuit. But for two years Bill Haley and the Comets kicked some musical ass. Haley was just 55 years old when he passed away. I had arrived in West Germany, got settled in, and watched Dick Clark on Armed Forces Television that originated from Rhein-Main Air Base the following Sunday afternoon. There was a gang of musicians backing some old footage of Bill Haley and the Comets singing “Rock Around The Clock”, and one of them was Charlie Daniels swinging his fiddle. Great tribute.

I saw Bill Haley and The Comets live at The Kilburn Gaumont State in London, the date was I believe about 1956. I can remember hearing "On your marks, get set,now ready, ready,go" as the stage curtains were raised, and there they were Bill Haley & The Comets singing Razzle Dazzle - the audience went CRAZY, we had never heard anything like this before ! only Frank Sinatra and Perry Como, so we were all blown away by the original KING OF ROCK, until Buddy came along.

I'm 73 and remember so well how elders acted this way towards rock music. My church called it devilish so I gave away my collections. We have this attitude still, look at comments and youth rebel at our past also. I started looking at today's music and some are very good. I'm integrated now and listen to the music and not the ERA. Try it. Oh, I quit church.

@@kevinwachsmann3111 Oh yeah-People couldn't understand Jazz either and look what it led to. A million dazed and confused Hippies and a greneration of junkies. Of course just as Hippies seemed to think they understood their hallucinogenics the Jazzies thought they under stood their Jazz. Often the scene of today is the product of the scene of yesterday or yesteryear.

This is the rock n' roll I remember, not the swing, jive or boogie that passes off for R&R. Bill Haley was the first R&R band I remember listening to before Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino, all of which we used to dance to in England during the 50s.

This reminds me of an incident at the school i went to here in Britain in 1959. The headmaster had set up a plan to teach those in their final year how to interact with members of the opposite sex at a dance. The only problem was the music was of a bygone era and when he visited the first session he couldn't understand why most of the pupils were not dancing. The young male and female teachers who were in charge of the session tried to explain to him that things had moved on and music had changed but the headmaster was one of the old school from the 1930's and would not have it so the female teacher put Move It on to the record player and every boy and girl was instantly on their feet dancing. The headmaster stormed out and the sessions were cancelled.
