I grew up on Bill King, from the early Raider days, the Warriors days and the A's Days. Love the man

Re: your comment -- Davis wanting to cut Bill King's salary in half was a big mistake. Nobody remembers who took Bill King's place as the voice of the Raiders. But he went on to be the play-by-play announcer for the A's, and along with Lon Simmons, announced the A's 1989 World Series win (ironic, in that the final game of that series, Bill had laryngitis and could barely speak; he did pipe up once with a whispery "Rickey" in a reference to Rickey Henderson). But growing up with Bill King as the announcer for the Warriors and Raiders (at the same time), and then the A's -- all of whom Bill announced their respective championships -- what a privilege to hear him, and what a career. To my mind, the Raiders were never "The Raiders" without the voice of Bill King.

Kevin Harlan replaced Bill King the following year. You're right though, the Raiders went downhill after Bill King left. It wasn't until the year 1999, that the Raiders had a pretty good run with Rich Gannon and Jon Gruden.

We too turned off the TV and put on the Radio announcing of Bill King! The BEST!
@oldschoolhawking81914 жыл бұрын
Yeah that was in the 70s, when the television and the radio broadcasts were synced up. Now there's like a eight second delay. You see the action before you hear the announcer.

Wow was blessed to have hear this legend with the mighty Oakland A’s wish I could have listen to him calling Raiders games. But when the Raiders came back to Oakland they got Greg Papa another legend.

I still hear Greg Papa on the 49ers radio broadcasts, he's definitely a Legend. 😎👍

We went to most games in Oakland. Always brought Bill King on the transistor radio. Perfect combination 🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️

That's what we did too. I remember many times fishing at Lake Chabot during a Raiders game and having a transistor radio in my pocket listening to Bill King announce game. Or when we were out hunting rabbits and pheasants with our Goshawks. 📻🗣️🏴☠️🏈👍

Bill King’s play-by-play style is the reason I became a Raider fan. All those great games, all those great Bill King calls. “Get your big butt outta here! He does!” And real Raider fans always turned down the TV game volume to listen to the description by Bill King.

Could somebody please digitally put together bill king and Greg papa,!!! Now that would be a double all time raider broadcast team that would never be beaten both are all time hall-of-famer in my book and on my radio dial used to listen to them while turning off the TV sound that is how deep some raider fans really absorb the game !!!!

I more or less grew up hearing Greg Papa as the voice of Oakland, but bill king sounds and looks like like he should be a sports caster

It was a crying shame Al Davis tried to lowball him on his last contract. He offered half the salary and Bill said see you later.

Yeah, I love the fact that the great John madden became a big voice of football, as sportscaster and commentator
@oldschoolhawking81914 жыл бұрын
@@mikebernhardt92 Yeah John Madden was the original Captain Obvious. With such quotes as: "these teams are so evenly matched, I think whoever scores the most points will win." Then he starts talking and laughing at the same time you don't know what the hell he's saying. Total classic John Madden.

No offense to Greg Papa, he couldn’t hold Bill King’s jock. Second to Vin Scully in my book.

The GOAT. Crazy that he’s the GOAT of two franchises and two sports. (Could be a third but I don’t follow NBA. He was the voice for the Raiders, A’s and Warriors (NBA).

Yeah, back in the day I was only interested in football and boxing. It wasn't until I got older, that I started watching MLB and NBA.
