Yeah, Pat Riley doesn’t run from anybody. That sigh of relief you saw on Riley’s face, after he realized Lambeer was only there to congratulate him, wasn’t because he was worried about getting hurt, believe me. He was just relieved to know that he wasn’t about to have to wack anyone. He knew he still had interviews to do, and he couldn’t stand the thought of Lambeer’s blood messing up his classy suit.

That series came down to Detroit blowing Game 3 at home and going up 2-1 in that series. The Knicks whipped Detroit in Game 1 and Isiah hit the game winner in Game 2. In Game 3 at the Palace, Detroit was up 2 with 4.7 seconds and 90 percent FT shooter Joe Dumars went to the line to put the game away. He missed both shots, Ewing hit a shot to force OT and the Pistons never recovered. It would be a decade before they won another playoff series.

@Danny P Orlando was fortunate enough to get past Chicago in '95. They didn't have the maturity, experience, depth, or coaching to dethrone the '96 - '98 Bulls teams. Hardaway was the only serious threat who was actually talented and didn't rely heavily upon the officials (O'Neal).

@bubufubu 2 жыл бұрын
@Danny P No, you still don't get it. O'Neal _never_ matured. Ever. Didn't matter what happened in Orlando. He was/is always going to be a man-child. Hardaway was way more mature _and_ talented, but he never had the leadership qualities or mental strength necessary to overcome the Rodman Bulls. As far as coaching, the only other guy who could compete with Jackson (at the time) was Larry Brown. He was busy with Indiana and Philadelphia. Had Chicago gotten by Orlando in '95, then there's no guarantee that they get by the Pacers. By the way, individual NBA players don't have win/loss records. It's a team sport.

Per the New York Times: "It turned out that, after five grueling games, the Pistons had little dislike or resentment for the Knicks. They were proud to shake the hands of fellow gladiators, real men who were eager to trade elbows, shoves and stares. The Pistons could at least relate to the Knicks, unlike the jet-setting, high-flying Jordan, his tongue dangling at outclassed opponents below. After losing Game 5 on Sunday, the Pistons acted as if they'd been given a whipping by kid brothers who'd grown up bigger and stronger than them. "We created a style of play and kind of got beat by the style we advocated ourselves," said Thomas. "The Knicks were too big and physical."

The Knicks had the same exact mentality of the Bad Boys Piston teams. The main difference was the guard play. Isiah Thomas was infinitely better than any point guard the Knicks had in that era, and John Starks was a glorified sixth man for NY. The Knicks had nobody close to Joe Dumars at the two guard position.

It's sort of strange the Knicks followed in the Pistons footsteps. The Bulls had already learned how to get by the Pistons. It seemed like Riley would have understand that and put together a team that had a better chance against the Bulls, instead of going down the Piston 2.0 road. This Knick team with Jackson and X-man was actually closer to the Pistons though, playing tough physical D and having some scoring options similar to the Pistons. However the Knicks traded away Jackson and X-man, and they ended up with a lesser, more one-dimensional version of Pistons. They lacked the scoring options of the Pistons, which was part of the Pistons success. The Pistons where tough and dirty, but they were also talented and had a lot of different weapons on the offensive end. Seemed like Riley would have made his team more like the Pistons by getting some good scoring options to complement their tough D or scrapping the whole Pistons 2.0 plan and come up with some other approach to beating the Bulls. At some level it didn't really matter, because Jordan retired which helped them get to the finals. However, in the finals that lack of offensive weaponry caught up with them and they lost to team that was actually similar to the Bulls - which in this case was Hakeems Rockets.

In theory yes, but you’ve got to start with your means and your means is always centered around your best player. Ewing was big center bully ball. That meant you build your whole team around that idea or you blow it up. Blowing up your team and identity after passing the Pistons is a tough - not impossible - call to make.

Well there you go they did have class as well as justice. They never complained about the bulls when they played dirty or physical because they did it too. But when Jordan all the sudden decided to sound off on them after going up 3-0 as if he's losing a war against them and try to put an asterisk on their chips, THEN they walked out on the disrespectful Bulls. The Knicks lost to the pistons in the playoffs as well and they never became as salty as Jordan did, so the pistons gave them their respect. The pistons also don't disrespect the Celtics for walking out on them. The bulls were the media market so they got to play victim against the pistons.
