Making heavy modifications to Bill's boat. he wants it to be more versatile so we started welding... watertight compartments in the front, a seat in the front, reinforced transom so he could add a plate to adjust the height of the motor, next time its pods in the back for extra floatation .... it will be fully decked out by the time we are done

Gary, i would think so - they are a lot more money too ! and when i run them my blood pressure and frustration level is much lower too vs running a spool gun ....and those "cheap" couple hundred $ spool guns .. they are more toys to get you buy than real tools ... once a spool gun cost close to or over $1000 .... than you most likely have something good

I have a boat in my garage that I'm working for a customer and it been a nightmare because I'm not only welding butthere is some fabrication involved I'm using my snapon spool gun and the little problem that I have is that the boat is thinner than the plates that I'm welding if I turn down my heat I'm not going to have a complete penetration but I'm trying to do my beest cuz everyday I learn something great video zila
@ZILAwelds
@ZILAwelds 6 жыл бұрын
the problem is not the spool gun itself - that is probably the spool gun i use - the problem is the process..... "regular" aluminum mig can only weld so thin.... typically 1/8" or .100" or 2.5mm .... everything thinner than that - they don't work because aluminum is a spray transfer and it is too hot to weld thinner material .... now you need to add pulse to "cool it down" a lot of those boats are .060" or 1.6mm .... unless you want to tig we everything you need a pulse mig machine

so the baseline has a hi freq pulse, and then overall its hitting like 1 or 1.5 pps ? very nice results for sure... "mig like tig" lol
@ZILAwelds
@ZILAwelds 6 жыл бұрын
yes - the baseline is a single pulse which is "fast" - how fast? that depends on the wire speed, slow wire speed slow pulses fast wire speed fast pulses (let's say roughly 30-300hz depending on the material and wire speed)... that is a typically synergic (pre-programmed) scale. Then you introduce the double pulse which is a slow pulse (0-10hz, of course, it can never be 0 but just to give you an idea) and that slower pulse has an "on time" or "duty" that means for x amount of time you are at the settings selected and for the rest of the time you are on "background" or "base" .... now in mig there is no base-current it is a voltage-driven process so you would set base voltage .... but you cant do that because then your wire speed and voltage would not be in the same ratio ..... so you have to set (in case of this machine) the background wire speed or. motor speed which will because of the synergic functions also adjust your background voltage ALL at the same time ..... so effectively wire speed makes amps reducing wire speed reduces amp (but you dont set background amps because you need to lower wire speed and voltage so you reduce motors speed and the machine does the rest for you ....). if you are still reading this and following me Gary, ( i will make an in-depth video on this here over the weekend!) what this does it gives you full penetration on the pulse on time, than a long "cooling" period where very little metal transfer at a low setting happens ( just enough to "satisfy the puddle enough" to prevent "crater cracking" in the weld .... and then gives you full penetration again on pulse on time ... a very clean, very controllable process ... what makes mig itself a little uncontrollable is: in order to have an arc you always need to have material adding to the puddle. unlike tig - heat in one hand - material in the other. - so YOU can choose when to add and how much to add .... mig is like driving through the walmart parking lot on cruise control at 40mph and trying to get in the parking spot the right way at the first time ... that is what makes mig welding so "difficult" in the first place .... the way how the pulse and the double pulse takes some "heat" out the welding process" that would be like taking some speed out of the Walmart parking lot .... let's say knock it down from 40 to 1--15 mph .... that is a lot more manageable... tig though is like feathering the clutch and doing precision parking .... different animal ...

Dumb question from a New Boater: Is it possible to Weld A Jon Boat with Stick Welding???? Not necessarily looking to make it pretty just strong & waterproof.
@ZILAwelds
@ZILAwelds 2 жыл бұрын
First if all i think this is a legitimate not a dumb question. Could you stick weld it? Theoretically YES sure …. In all practicality stick welding aluminum requires a certain minimum material thickness. That thickness is typically give or take 1/8”. Now depending on your experience and talent level, and depending on your machine ( arc dynamic) and depending on your consumables ( stick rod brand, type, diameter …) you might have to use material thicker than 1/8” …. Generalizing : 3/16 or 1/4 is “easier” to stick weld aluminum than 1/8” or .100”….. Also cost can be a factor …. Aluminum stick rods go for about 35-45 dollar per lbs, mig wire 5-8 dollar per lbs tig rods 5-7 dollar per lbs …. Seeing that you might use as much as 15+lbs of filler to build your john boat you may spend hundreds more using stick …. Stick is definitely the slowest of all these processes, but its the best to do outdoors in the elements ….. stick aluminum also requires a good level of talent or practice to make it happen where mig and tig might be easier to learn for most people …. And again, i have seen guys just pick up and weld aluminum sticks like ….WOW!

Hi Peter, Very nice work mate , This is what I'm hoping to see or similar from that Everlast 253 DPI when you get a little more time on on it . As per our last disscussion I'm some what aware of setting the pulse frequency as the machine a guy in town is letting me practise on has a pulse freq of 1 to 5 HZ on the double pulse . It is a Cigweld 320 SP 3 phase machine. Peter the only choice we have in Australia for 240 Volt 15 amp single and double pulse machines for the home guy in his shed is a CEBORA 200 amp supposed to be an italian made machine and a T&R 200 amp Aussie made machine by UNIMIG i believe and both these are well in excess of $ 5500.00 , $ 6000.00 plus dollars .That is why I'm looking at the Everlast 253 DPI and if it can come some what close to what you did in this video with a little tuning then I'm sold Keep up the great work mate. Cheers from Australia Troy
@ZILAwelds
@ZILAwelds 6 жыл бұрын
troy, the Cigweld 320 SP is a Lorch machine made in germany (at least designed in germany) it is the same as a thermanl arc 320SP or an Esab xxxx something master 320SP??? anyways when you compare these european machines to the 253 DPI. - you should do that personally for yourself .... you should not take anyone's word on youtube for it .... I dont know what the Cigweld 320 SP cost but the thermal qrc 320sp comes in single phase and cost about $7000US .... just looking at the price - i dont think that you pay OVER 3x as much money just for the brand name on the side ... that is all i am going to say .... I mean if you build anything today - or a welder or anything .... its all full of electronics .... and those electronics you have to look at 1) what components are used 2) what does the circuitry looks like 3) the software ! even in cars - by remapping the software you can totally change the vehicle .... with welding machines it is VERY similar... Try one ! and let me know how it works for you.

Thanks Peter , As always i appreciate your input and advice and I'm pretty sure many others appreciate it as well . Peter we are extremely over priced for everything here in Australia, just 1 example i shopped around for a bottle of 75 /25 argon helium mix just to try and the cheapest quote i got was $ 450.00 plus and just out of curiosity i asked for a price for a b0ttle of welding grade helium (straight no mix ) i hope your sitting down, $1400.00 plus And I'm pretty sure others will back me on this . Im pretty sure cigweld is owned by ESAB and the 320 SP only comes in 3 phase here in Aus and it is around the $ 10 000. 00 plus here . I just started following you on IG and hopefully i am going to start posting soon . i will send you a dm and hopefully we can have the odd chat and you might understand a little better about the position I'm in. Once again i thank you for your time and appreciate all that you do . Take care , Stay safe Cheers Troy

Yes i seen that video , i was wanting to try it out with Tig on some thicker items but for what i do that is just too expensive . That video chucke did about that F Truck he bought and said was $ 49 990 .00 drive away that same Truck is probably around the $ 150 000.00 here in Australia thats what I've heard . Even my Argon is $ 90.00 a bottle ( G size ) which i believe is the same as you large bottles over there and ive heard some horror stories of people paying $ 150.00 to $ 200.00 for a bottle of Argon . Any how thanks again .Cheers Troy

@ZILAwelds
@ZILAwelds 6 жыл бұрын
Sharn, I want to say no but all things considered - the warpage is VERY minimal....! what happens is - back in the days I used to tig weld stuff - it warped like no tomorrow - then I started MIG welding it - that was a lot faster and less warpage ... Now with the double pulse being soooo much cooler. - I didn't even back step it, and it is awesome !!!! nice and "cool" the reason why the orange level is out is to check how much the front "pulled down" ... and it is about 1/4" only ...... you cant even. tell just looking at it .... if I would have back stepped it and not just welded the whole thing one shot .... I would say there pretty much would not have been any warpage...

Just looking at the weld it appears to be 4043 or 4943 definitely not 5356. 4043 will leave that really nice frost line and zero soot where 5356 has a smaller frost line and a lot more soot when mig welding with it.

@ZILAwelds
@ZILAwelds 6 жыл бұрын
Austin, i personally would prefer a machine with double pulse (that reduces the heat input even more than "just pulse" under $3000 ??? the air gets really thin ... there are not many machines out there that you can buy for that kind of money. There is the HTP Pro Pulse 200 and there is an everlast machine 253DPI (that this this point i dont know enough about it yet) that is all the machines that i personally know for under 3g then when you say under 4g - that makes no difference there is still nothing there and when you say under 5g there is the Lincoln 350MP (which has double pulse (because the miller 350P does NOT) and the HTP Pro Pulse 300, which BOTH of those machines are excellent machines .... however the HTP Pro Pulse 300 compares more to the Lincoln C300 (which is over 7g) than the 350 mp - it has excellent double pulse features .. and you can weld thicker than 1/4" and you have a duty cycle to weld all day long .... so its a tough call ... if you need to stay under 3g - buy the HTP and the Everest - HTP has a 90 day money back guarantee everlast has a 30 day money back guarantee - run them both, try them both - fins out which one is better for you - and send the other one back .... that is what i would do if i was you

@ZILAwelds
@ZILAwelds 4 жыл бұрын
appearance is the "side effect". the main effect is reduced heat input without any loss worth mentioning in penetration or integrity .... the double pulse allows for less heat input, the warpage, less distortion and a smaller heat effected zone (where the aluminum is annealed and looses it's strength) ..... I have a video on that I think its called aluminum 101

ZILA Thanks for the explanation, why in your video do you switch fro double pulse to single pulse? Why not weld everything with double pulse? Is there any benefits to single pulse, speed? Thanks again for your help, I’m considering building a aluminum boat and want to buy the best equipment possible to make up for my lack of skill.
@ZILAwelds
@ZILAwelds 4 жыл бұрын
Matthew Ackerson the single pulse is synergic ( which means it does everything by “itself” ) Slower wire feed rates = lower pulse frequency Faster wire feed rates = higher pulse frequency The ins and outs of this is a LONG story.... i will have a video about more details eventually
@ZILAwelds
@ZILAwelds 4 жыл бұрын
Matthew Ackerson oh - maybe i should read your reply correctly .... lol Single pulse is “easier” / forgiving ..... with double pulse it takes more “torch discipline” you have to go in a straight line at the correct speed .... Hot start and crater fill gives you more control in single pulse. Technically you can weld what you want when you want .... single pulse is easier for the operator .... no fuss no muss

Pete, if you had only one mig welder which welder would you chose of the ones you have, the Stehl looks a lot like the pro pulse, is the company related or perhaps both using some licensed technology?
@ZILAwelds
@ZILAwelds 6 жыл бұрын
David, Stel and HTP share a lot of the same technology and R&D.... some of their machines are 100% identical in hardware - others are really close but not 100% identical - some are 100% identical in software - others are not and some are identical 100% in hardware AND software... The accessories are typically different though... they used different mig and tig torches, foot pedals, regulators ... and you can't really buy Stel machines in the USA (at least not walk in a store and get one) but therefore outside the USA you cant really buy HTP machines ... ( i mean you can order on online and they typically ship worldwide ...but that is if you want to pay the freight and want to deal with service 5 countries away halfway around the world ...
@ZILAwelds
@ZILAwelds 6 жыл бұрын
David, I guess I never answered your question."if I only had one mig welder" I this a tough question... out of the 30 machines I have my personal favorite the one I like the best by far is the HTP Pro Pulse 200. Now if I could only have one - I am not sure that this is the one I would pick..... why not? Because I would probably have to pick the Iron mig 303SP or the HTP Pro Pulse 300...... Those machines have much more power when I weld big stuff and a better low end for aluminum work on very thin material. Now why I not prefer the 300 over the 200 to begin with? because the 200 is AWESOME - the right size, highly portable, little power draw (can be run on a 30 amp breaker) - i mean i LOVE it all the way around !!!! and it is priced WAY to cheap for what it can do so why not the 300 - the 300 is heavy (more than twice as heavy) that makes it less portable (i mean if it would live in a ship on a cart - it wouldn't be too bad) ... but I do a lot of mobile work ... and also it is more than twice the money. So that being the only drawbacks I can think of - and trust me - portability is a BIG deal in my business ... although i like the 200 better overall - I would have to go with the 300 if i could only have one mig welder ... but luckily welder are not like women - you can have more than one and one is not jealous of the other one .... LOL

I don't know what you want to do with the machine. I don't know the size of your project - what works for me may or may not work for you - but you be the judge - if you want to know what the actual differences between the machines are - I will fill you in as far as hardware and software differences ... generally speaking: personally, I prefer most of the HTP accessories like mig and tig torches. Also from what I have seen if there are software differences the HTP (besides having software matched to the US markets as far as gasses and wires) has typically a couple additional programs that the Stel version does not have .... and the PP200 has this plugin for the remote control ... which is beyond awesome! I don't know if you saw my remote control video .... it was really worth watching... but both machines are GREAT!
@davidcarroll2908
@davidcarroll2908 6 жыл бұрын
I did see the remote and yes its awesome. I am just an overly obsessed hobbyist. I am a youtube trained welder and have spent thousands of dollars in supplies so far, I say its a hobby because I haven't made any money doing it, as its only items for myself or my jobs. I consider this my education, I have a mobile welder set up its Ranger gxt 250 ACDC machine set up on a 19' trailer, a Lincoln 180 was my first mig, then I wanted to learn tig so I purchased a AHP Alpha Tig, then I wanted an electric stick so i got a cheap 250amp stick Chinese unit just to practice stick. Then I purchase an eastwood 250 mig. at this time I wanted an HTP but I ended up cheaping out. I also have 2 plasma cutters one small hobart and a 45xp hypertherm which is really a great machine. I have yet to try welding aluminum but this is my next step. I really want a good aluminum welder with pulse preprogrammed settings. I have seen you weld a lot with the propulse and others so that is my dream machine but i am worried about needing more power than 200. I somehow stumbled across Chuckie and saw some of your Videos from there and have been watching eversince. Its crazy, but I actually view my you tube watching as educational as much as entertaining. I have always been someone that does not get a sence of accomplishment unless I am Building something or repairing something. I appoligize for my grammer not being the best but for whatever reason as long as someone understands what I am trying to say Then my spelling and grammer is not so important to me. I am 47 years old, have 2 adult boys and a 13 year old daughter. I am a general contractor building commercial offices or is what I do as my day job. I figure since I now you a lot more than you know me I would at least give you a back ground as to the Welder side of the person you are talking with. you are a great teacher and you keep it real. I really like seeing real projects rather than someone welding on coupons all day but all has its part in learning. There is so much i need to learn, the hardest issue i have todate is a vertical stick weld, my welds just never turn out like i want them to.

Zila what is the best mig welder with pulse to weld aluminum?
@ZILAwelds
@ZILAwelds 6 жыл бұрын
Juan, it all depends... does it need to be portable? do you have a budget in mind? The best machine I have ever welded aluminum with is a Lincoln S359. here are the specs. www.lincolnelectric.com/en-us/Equipment/Pages/product.aspx?product=K3554-1(LincolnElectric) This has AC mig pulse it is pretty awesome !!!! BUT you better have REALLY deep pockets too. This will blow most machines including fronius out of the water! but you better be 100% serious about aluminum mig... if you want to learn more about this technology read this: www.lincolnelectric.com/assets/global/Products/Consumable_AluminumMIGGMAWWires-SuperGlaze-SuperGlaze4043/c8100.pdf read page 36.... If you are a little bit more on a budget. The Stel Iron mig 303P or the HTP Pro Pulse300 is a GREAT machine !!! way better than other machines that are even $2000+ more! now if you are not in the market to spend $5k+ then the only machine is the $2000-$3000 price range that works really exceptionally well is the HTP PP200 .... the arc quality and features that this machine has. unmatched !!! even at twice the price other manufacturers don't have that. What I like about it - it is very portable and affordable !!!! The limitation is how thick you can weld with it. 1/4". .... that is about it on aluminum .... and you can not do this all day long either .... but most certainly i feel it is a good machine for the $ what are you planning on doing ? how thick do you want to weld ? do you ever want to take the machine with you somewhere or does this all happen in the same place (at your shop) always?

ZILA Pete does the different liner allow a longer mig gun? To let you use longer than 8ft
@ZILAwelds
@ZILAwelds 6 жыл бұрын
its a combination of a lot of things: the liner is only one component - if you run 5000 series wire which is stiffer than 4000 series wire that works in your favor, if you run bigger diameters it works in your favor ... swo it is all a combination between liner, alloy and diameter - that determine gun length .... i have a water cooled gun at is 12' and i weld with it all the time and I don't have issues .... some people have 8 ft guns and have issues
