Trumpet Soloist - Danny Stiles
Tenor Soloist - Frank Perowsky
William Russell Watrous III (born June 8, 1939 in Middletown, Connecticut) is a professional jazz trombonist. He is perhaps best known by casual fans of jazz music for his rendition of Sammy Nestico's arrangement of the Johnny Mandel ballad "A Time for Love," which he recorded on a 1993 album of the same name. A self-described "bop-oriented" player, he is well known among fellow trombonists as a master technician and for his mellifluous sound.

In memory of David Marc Fischer, 1962-2009, who loved Bill Watrous. We listened to Dirty Dan and the Tiger of San Pedro over and over back in 1975ish, when we were 13-year-old trombone and trumpet players. Thanks for posting this. After David's death last week, it brought back a lot of fond memories.

Very sorry for your loss. I bought the album when it was new. I wore it out. I am in your same age group. There has been no album or band to equal this level of talent since that time.

I was honored to play a cover of this solo with my drum corps, back when drum corps was drum corps. I remember sitting in a practice room for a couple of days figuring out then could only play a portion of it (for Obvious reasons). Bill was one of the greats!!!

What a tight band - Danny Stiles rules on lead trumpet. Watrous makes it sound so easy. Bill is also the nicest guy you will ever meet and a great storyteller. He had us all laughing until it hurt! The album cover shown at the beginning was a special promo that was sent out only to radio stations and is pretty rare. Columbia finally re-issued the original MWR albums on CD a few years ago. Thanks for sharing this man, great stuff.

Bill was my inspiration as I was a teenager. I never became anything big in music, but I still have amazing respect for him today. He can do things that few could ever dream of doing. Also, still love Tiger of San Pedro! GREAT tune!

Wow. I hadn't heard that. I heard him live with the Navy Commodores in I believe 1977 at the Navy School of Music. I don't know what was better - his playing or the stories he told from when he was in the Navy. Luckily I took my little trusty Panasonic cassette recorder so I have a recording of the concert.
