Agreed. I am guilty of being somewhat dismissive of Eilish. I had seen the Bad Guy video a while back, and although its hook was catchy, I didn't like the track's heavy production on the first listen. It acted as camouflage. That, combined with a bit of ageism did not help. I don't care for many "tween sensations" now that I'm in my thirties. In any case, after seeing this stripped-down, pitch-perfect performance, I'm very impressed. With her and her brother. Anyone who can hit it out of the park with their voice alone (or with minimal accompaniment) wins me over. And they write their own stuff? That's quality, right there. Even the lyrics are clever.

@SunflowerSpotlight5 жыл бұрын
Uh oh, seems like that’d put her solidly in the good girl camp. You know what that means. 😳 I agree though, it’s so rare to find someone who’s even better live. The only other one I think of that isn’t semi-classical is Nothing But Thieves, especially with their songs If I Get High and Lover, Please Stay. Connor has this way of being just... encapsulated by the song, and flips into falsetto so effortlessly. She has that sort of effortlessness, but in a totally different way. It’s really interesting. I can’t imagine the level she’ll be on in ten years, when she’s actually had a post-puberty voice for, you know, more than a few years, has time to tinker more. It’s really unbelievable how talented she is. Awesome in the original sense of the word.

I am in my 50's now but my taste in music has always evolved with the times. My older brother isn't so open to new music so when he called me and said, "you heard Billie Eilish?" My eyebrow went up. Ok, I need to check this out. Masterclass musicianship, strong writing, sweetest voice and control since Eva Cassidy passed away. She paints colours, every verse a palette, I get constant shivers from the harmonies. Finneas is a studio pro. Acoustic, actually they seem even better without all the carefully crafted production, as good as that is. And you have to be damn good to pull that off. I'm just blown away by these guys they're the real deal. I saw a couple of docs on her and Finneas and man, my kind of people too. So many of the young artists working for labels are elevated by their PR people into being like icons that are inaccessible to mere mortals like us. These guys are like your cool neighbours.

Much harder: Holding a note without any perturbation. THAT takes fucking skill. Vibrato is often used to hide that weakness in one's voice.
