She had a wild life. I think the imperfections in her voice show her pain and trauma. Her voice did suffer a lot before she passed Bc drug abuse. But an icon that I look up to nonetheless. Rest In Power

You have to know the history of popular singing to understand what is so great about Billie. Having said that, I liked her way before I new any one that stuff and I actually only know about it because of her. Her style was a synthesis of everything that came before and yet she owes little to other singers. Her approach was truly original and groundbreaking. She was not really a big deal during her lifetime and had pretty much only a cult following but was loved and honored by other musicians. It was mostly the newspaper headline elements of her later life that helped create the legend and this propelled appreciation for her artistry into the mainstream. Often described as a singer's singer, she was the first, and is probably the only true, jazz singer. Listen to any other versions of this song by any other singer of the time and you should be able to discern why Billie's rendition stands out. Many of the songs she sang became jazz standards and she sang the definitive versions of them. This track is a fine example. Here is original singer of the song.
