Billy Holliday has style, grace & a unique ingredient that is lacking nowadays sincerity…she pours out her heart & soul out with every lyric…this lady was a consummate artist a top shelf kind of girl…love her voice…take a listen, you will never be disappointed…Reeka.

Sinatra's favourite vocalist, and his biggest influence. When he heard of Lady Day's death he locked himself in a room for three days with a bottle of JD, weeping copiously over his copy of "Lady In Satin".

Unsurprisingly, she makes it her own. The exceptional backing of her sidemen (generously listed by the poster above, in the notes), didn't hurt the performance any.

No singer can "cover" this song, and no one but Lady could get within a universe of what Frank did with it during virtually live performance. Yes, it's a lovely recording, but it won't make you forget Frank's versions -- he owns it in perpetuity. Look on youtube for an incredibly intimate 1962 live performance with a quartet at Royal Festival Hall. Yes, Lady and Prez were Frank's inspiration, but it's clear from this recording that she also dug Frank. And in her last recording sessions, she sang several songs associated with him. An important fact that I slept through for 50 years is that the song is the work of two of the greatest of American song writers, composer Harold Arlen (Over the Rainbow) and lyricist Johnny Mercer. And I didn't know that it was introduced (in "The Sky's The Limit," a film that introduced another Arlen/Mercer standard, "My Shining Hour."

Why argue the point! Frank is great, but Billie owns this song!
