Nice touch Gustavo, really enjoyed the video. What year is the Viking, and are those the stock pick-ups?
@GustavoSampaioLP3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I'm not entirely sure but I believe it was built in 2008 or 2009. And yes, stock pick-ups.

Can't figure out how to play that fast lick.

I read it from the Omnibook, it has a lot of Charlie Parker transcriptions! It is still very difficult to get right.

@@GustavoSampaioLP I'm not that fast of a player. How long have you been working on this lick?
@GustavoSampaioLP2 жыл бұрын
@@icemaster9728 fast runs like that one need to be played reeeeal slow in the beginning, note for note. I haven't played this in a long time but I remember practicing that line for a long time!

Hey (again), I liked the sound of your Viking so much I got one myself. If you don't mind my asking, what kind/guage strings are you using in this video?
@GustavoSampaioLP3 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul! Wow, I'm really happy that these videos made you want to get the same guitar! Unfortunately as this was over 4 years ago I can't recall exactly what string gauge I was using, but I can tell you what I've tried over a few years: - At this point, I might have been using an Elixir set, which I used for a long time. I usually went for 009 or 010 and tried to get those "hybrid" sets with heavier bottom strings like 010-052 instead of 010-046. - There was a time in which I put D'Addario flatwounds (011) on it and it sounded really nice for jazzier stuff (check my video playing Wes Montgomery's solo on Mean to Me and Chet Baker's solo on Autumn Leaves to hear that). - Currently I'm using Ernie Ball's 010-052 set because I ended up missing roundwounds for other tones that weren't completely clean, and also I missed being able to bend strings as I did with normal strings, and they still work perfectly fine for clean tones. Flatwounds do give you quite a different feel to the touch and feel stiffer, but unfortunately I did not find them very versatile. Maybe I'll get another set once I have more guitars! I hope this helps! All the best.

@@GustavoSampaioLP Fantastic! Thanks so much Gustavo! The guitar came with strings that would be fine for blues, but I'm looking for something jazzier--I'll try these out. I'll also check out those solos--i'm a huge Chet Baker fan.

@@paulgordon3113 Glad to help! I just remembered that my cover of Peter Bernstein's solo on Lady Bird also features the Viking with flatwound strings. I'm sure you'll enjoy those videos more than this one as they are a lot more recent :) I hope you enjoy your guitar as much as I've enjoyed mine so far!

I had a hollow body Hagstrom almost identical to this one in 1972 (final year elementary school). The only difference is that mine had the classic "Fender" head shape, same color as the candy apple red body. I bought it for $199 with hard shell case and sold it three years later for $125. As has happened other times over the years, I wish I still had it.
