I'm addicted to your videos. So didatic for me as an english learner! The first rule "n before p,b,m" remembered me a gramatical rule in portuguese that we learn when we are kids: "before P and B, we only put M" (we don't have M and M together within words, so it's only before P and B). It seems clear that both rules exist for the same reason: phonetic sounds. But in portuguese the graphemes are quite similar with the phonemes, what doesn't happen in english. Thank you for your videos, they are helpping me a lot.

It should occur naturally. However, when you learn English as a foreign language you may pronounce words without linking them in this way.

Thank you . Just a quick question, this must be something natural , right? How can I get it without studying it by hard?. Love your way of teaching. Regards from Argentina.
@BillieEnglish Жыл бұрын
Yes, it is. It is a process that happens naturally if the speaker follows the rhythm and patterns of English as a stress-timed language. All features of connected speech (e.g. assimilation, elision, weak forms etc) exist because English is a stress-timed language and sometimes we need to speed up pronouncing words to keep the timing from one stress to the next the same. You can find out more about this in my video on 'sentence stress'.

@BillieEnglish2 жыл бұрын
Im glad to hear it was helpful 💛🙏 In this video I give you only examples of regressive assimilation (also called anticipatory assimilation OR right-to-left assimilation). I discuss place & manner of articulation when, e.g. we look at the example 'in Barcelona' = /b/ is a voiced consonant formed with both lips closed, so /n/ in 'in' changes to /m/ because /m/ is also formed with both lips closed - unlike the sound /n/ where our lips are open. All the best for your exam!! 💝

Does the assimilation from voiced /TH/ to /d/ sound exist? I'm a Portuguese native speaker and it's very hard for me to pronounce the /TH/ or make the transition to it in the middle of senteces when I'm speaking fast, so I end just pronouncing the beginning of words like ''this'', ''those'' and ''the'' as a /D/, like ''desire''. Is it correct?
@BillieEnglish2 жыл бұрын
Hi Matheus! A good question - there isn't really assimilation in the way that the 'th' does not become a /d/ sound. Remember that your tongue is a muscle and as with all muscles, we need to train them to become stronger and faster. New movements are hard to learn at first but if you keep practising putting your tongue forward towards the teeth to say a voiced 'th' and then retract it to say /d/, you will eventually become faster and those transitions will be much smoother. Why don't you practise it for 5 minutes each day for 2 weeks? I am sure after that you'll find it much much easier!

It's impossible to memorize all these pronunciation rules. Because such rules are descriptive rather than proscriptive, native speakers follow them without even knowing that such rules exist. If you want to learn to speak another language, the best way to do it is to spend a lot of time listening to native speakers and just trying to sound like them, rather than trying to memorize dozens of descriptive rules.
@BillieEnglish Жыл бұрын
Yes, of course. However, my videos are also for people studying phonology and linguistics with the aim to develop AI speech systems like (my personal background) and for that you need to know about those things to recognise natural speech. It also helps the average learner understand why spelling and pronunciation differ so much in English 😊
@radjaradja4878 ай бұрын
Yes I am student and i need this lesson
@Isagutto8 ай бұрын
The purpose of the video is not necessarily to make you memorize every single pronunciation pattern in English, it is to allow you to understand why and how these phonological processes happen, which is wonderful for non-native English speakers, English students, English teachers and linguists and as for me, a Venezuelan English teacher and linguist. Latinos struggle with pronunciation since English is not a phonetic language like Spanish, so it can be very difficult to learn pronunciation because the spelling may not tell you much about how to pronounce a word. This video has the purpose of making learners familiar with the phenomena we find in connected speech, as patterns that have been identified in real language, which is more than helpful for those who notice things in speech that aren't explained by spelling rules and also to understand why sometimes some words change in their pronunciation.
