Hi teacher, from Argentina. I find your videos very useful! I want to ask you if the word "ADJECTIVE" is stressed on the first or second syllable? many thanks for considering my request 😀

Is lunchtime not a compound adjective e.g. lunch-time rest? In that case, the rule was to stress the second syllable i.e. time rather than lunch. Pl guide.

I’m a bit confused. The words apple and table are two-syllable really? You explained in the previous videos that we count quantity of syllables on quantity of vowel sounds in words. These example words have only one. Please, could you clarify this issue?
@BillieEnglish
@BillieEnglish Ай бұрын
Hello! These 2 words have 2 vowel sounds and therefore two syllables. The last syllable contains a schwa in both words and that's a very short vowel sound, e.g. 'apple' = /ˈæp.əl/ ... the final schwa is very short and the syllable could turn into a syllabic consonant! However, it is correct that both of these words contain two vowels and two syllables.

Why we say in disagreement stressed in third and not second ??
@BillieEnglish
@BillieEnglish 8 ай бұрын
Hello! You can see the stress in the phonemic transcription here: /ˌdɪs.əˈɡriː.mənt/ Also, remember one of the 'rules' concerning word stress is that prefixes and suffixes are generally not stressed, so that means 'dis_' & '-ment' are ruled out already and what we have left is 'agree'. In fact, the word 'disagreement' retains the same stress pattern as its root word 'agree'. 'Agree' is stressed on the second syllable. Say it out loud and listen to it. The first syllable is the unstressed schwa sound. It is much shorter than the vowel in the next syllable 'gree'. This second syllable is also much louder and clearer = it's stressed. I hope this helps!

Mam, I've seen somewhere else that apple should be broken down as ap-ple, happy as hap-py and so on. That is double letter should be equally parted to the two syllable🤔
