It is much appreciated when members of the medical profession make the additional effort to learn how to communicate via signing. It doesn't replace having a qualified / skilled interpreter but it sure does make it nicer while waiting for terps to arrive and/or during extended (multi-day stays) when a 24/7 interpreter presence may not be warranted. So I work in a nursing home. And there was a rumor going around that we were going to receive a elderly gentleman that is deaf, he speaks very little. And he can sign, but no one knows how to use ASL! He can get aggressive if he gets upset, so some of are trying to learn as quickly as possible. Signs like it’s time to eat, and time for shower, here are your medications to take, stand, let’s walk, time for bed, brush your teeth, and some others I can recall right now

I have a niece that I would love to be able to talk to more. I'm of hearing and learned the 'sign' alphabet when I was about 12 years old and it stuck in my head. To be honest this video is helpful but In 10 second sections. So fast to understand, but it's there to learn. Thanks.

I love your videos, i just have one question. I noticed in this video, the student often signs with reverse handedness to you- ie using her left hand instead of right for some signs. Does this make a difference?

That particular class has a prerequisite of "ASL 4." So if you haven't finished Lessons 1 through 60 yet I recommend you do those first (and maybe some of my other videos as well) "then" come back and watch the medical signing videos later on..

What if you have bangs? Does it make a difference in how others will read your facial expressions?

Question: A student asks: "What if you have bangs? Does it make a difference in how others will read your facial expressions?" Response: If your bangs are long enough to cover your eyebrows it will have an impact on how easily your signing is understood since the eyebrows play a significant role in the facial grammar that is used to indicate whether you are signing a question -- and if so -- what type of question you are asking. Most skilled signers can still figure out if you are asking a question and what type of question you are asking simply by evaluating the tilt of your your head, small changes in the muscles in your face (particularly around your eyes) the signs you use, and the context of your signing. I know some ASL teachers who are not overly thrilled when they have to grade video submissions by students with bangs because it requires more attention to determine if a student with (long) bangs is indeed using proper facial grammar for their sentences. This becomes onerous (requiring a level of effort that becomes burdensome) if the signing is being evaluated from a poorly lit video viewed in a tiny window frame in which the student's head is approximately 3/4 of an inch in size. Does that mean you should cut your bangs? I suppose it depends on if you are taking a graded ASL class or not. If you become a professional sign language interpreter you might seriously want to consider a hair style that doesn't involve bangs. Might I recommend to you my own personal hair style? It is easy to maintain and I literally never have a bad hair day. Ever. Warm regards, - Dr. Bill

I'm only on lesson 7, so this is jumping ahead, but I am a phlebotomist and I want to learn signs appropriate to what I do. I have found the sign for BLOOD-DRAW, but when introducing myself would it be better to say MY-WORK-BLOOD-DRAW or to fingerspell phlebotomist? The general public isn't always familiar with my title. Is there a sign for phlebotomist? This is what I was thinking: HELLO-MY-NAME--L-A-U-R-E-N. I--P-H-L-E-B-O-T-O-M-I-S-T. I-BLOOD-DRAW.

Woah...you are watching one of the medical signing videos. Those are for advanced students. I recommend first going through the instructional series for levels 1 through 4 prior to doing any of the special topics.

Instead of wishing for captions, might I instead suggest that you invest the time and effort to prepare yourself to benefit from the video. This video is of an actual class going on. Students in college are expected to complete the prerequisites before taking an advanced class. That is a real student sitting next to me. In the studio audience are other students. None of them are using captions. Instead, they completed ASL 1, ASL 2, ASL 3, and ASL 4 , and ASL Fingerspelling classes BEFORE taking "Medical Sign Language." They did the "work" necessary to become ready to take that class. Go to my channel's home page and work your way through the beginning level videos until you have completed Lesson 60 THEN come back and watch this medical video. How advanced is she? She couldn't sign "alright" very well even after several of his examples.

That particular student had probably completed ASL 4 and was likely taking ASL 5 concurrently. She probably had several different teachers prior to showing up in my class. Interestingly, it is sort of a good thing when my interns struggle with a sign -- because if the sign is hard for them it is probably hard for quite a few folks in the viewing audience who will benefit from the struggles of the intern as she progresses ever closer toward fluency.

Bill Vicars Thank you. Looking back, I hope I didn't seem overly critical. I'm struggling, so I often compare my progress to others. When I took a general knowledge test years ago, I failed the "spatial relationship" part, so I think I have trouble recognizing shapes as well as other students.
