Lyrics:
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
It's not warm when she's away
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And she's always gone too long anytime she goes away
Wonder this time where she's gone
Wonder if she's gone to stay
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And this house just ain't no home anytime she goes away

Fun fact : he actually sang "I know" 26 times because he realized that he forgot to write a verse during the recording. When it was over, he wanted to quickly write one, but everybody in the studio told him to keep it. 😉

Bill Withers' 'Ain't No Sunshine' is a timeless classic that captures the universal experience of loss and longing. Withers' expressive voice and minimalist instrumentation create an atmosphere of melancholy and reflection that is as powerful today as it was when it was released in 1971. A masterpiece of soul music.

The absolute craziest part to me is that this song has been covered COUNTLESS times, probably hundreds ... and yet, ive NEVER heard a single cover match the original. literally every cover misses the small details that make this song so beautiful ... withers voice being the main one, but also the footsteps, the plucking from the guitar, the bass, those old school strings ... man, i love this song

RIP, Bill Withers, and thank you for your music. “We are devastated by the loss of our beloved, devoted husband and father. A solitary man with a heart driven to connect to the world at large, with his poetry and music, he spoke honestly to people and connected them to each other,” the family statement read. “As private a life as he lived close to intimate family and friends, his music forever belongs to the world. In this difficult time, we pray his music offers comfort and entertainment as fans hold tight to loved ones.

Bill Withers proved that you do not need to be a music degree graduate or a guitar virtuoso (who knows all the chords, the scales, the licks and riffs) or a multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire to craft meaningful songs with simple but poetic lyrics and without complicated chord changes and kilometric solos. Bill is one of the best singer-songwriters ever.

Message to the ether: The woman had been wronged. She told me that she just wanted someone to take care of HER for a change. No problem, I can do that. Two years on, I landed a great job 150 miles from her Grandma, her Mom, and her sisters. Six months into that gig, I came home to a good-bye note and an empty house. Two months after that, I got a phone-call from her telling me that she was pregnant. I spent the next 30 years trying to make her happy. I finally succeeded by granting her a divorce which blamed me for all.

In 1971, this thirtysomething guy walks into a studio with a guitar and something simple he wrote between shifts. Booker T. Jones, a master at keeping things simple, handled the arrangement, and came up with this here single that does in two minutes what Isaac Hayes took four albums and symphony orchestras to accomplish. "Just As I Am" indeed; just Bill Withers, his guitar and the bare naked truth. And I just can't seem to get enough.

This song is about an older guy in love with a younger girl and how bittersweet it makes him feel. He aches for her when she's not around, but at the same time he knows she's too young and the relationship can only bring him heartache. I have walked down this road. After the 22 'I Knows' the lines that get me are: "Hey, I oughta leave young thing alone But ain't no sunshine when she's gone". (Oh my God I know that feeling...even now)

In an age when charlatans so often claim to be 'authentic,'' Bill's lyrics speak to an everyman honesty/authenticity that echoes down the years, simple yet great writing, emotions writ large without a trace of pomposity or self-indulgence, true to himself always. He walked away so early, but his legacy will long outlive him. RIP Bill, and thank you.

My mother passed in 1970. My Father was devastated. I remember hearing this song playing on the radio some time later. It played every hour on the hour right after Ms. Jean Knight's Mr. BIG Stuff. This went on for quite a while. My Dad would go off to himself and cry like a lost child. Because this time he knew she would not be back. He never remarried. In 2001 He joined my mother in Heaven. Now they have all Eternity to be together. Mom, Dad. I love and miss you both. I hope you both know, that your little girl grew up to become a Minister, Bible Teacher, and Gospel Singer. Thank you both so much for what you have instilled in me from my youth. I never departed from it. And I never will.☺ Now everyday is a lovely day forever! RIP Mother Mrs. Naomi Lee Johnson 1923-1970. This song will forever remind me of my late dog. She passed away last summer. Some time after I was sitting in car as we drove past a beach I had taken her not so long ago, on a very special day as we had been on a roadtrip with just the two of us. And as I looked into the horizon, this song started playing on the radio... It hit me hard. I was 13 when I got her and I took her everywhere I could with me. She was with me for 13 years. A very special dog, and the best friend and teacher I could've hoped for. Needless to say, I miss her terribly.

Someone issue that we're having is we're having good people like this artist in your father pass away each and every single day. One year later and things have just gotten worse and I just discovered this artist. Right when you do like this the most where it's not possibly selling about money, sex, drugs, and/or material possessions.
