Hi, I use 316 stainless steel for outdoor pieces. Will this finish last outdoors or does it require clear or powder coating? Thank you.

Wondering if the stainless matel still retains it's corrosive resistance after this treatment? I imagine so but wanted to double check. Thanks in advance!

Hi Bill, I have done some cold bluing on guns here and there through the years and as you know those receivers on some can be tough unless you can do actual color case hardening. I was wondering though; would you recommend heating the steel slightly 1st for better results or does that not really matter with this product? Also, do you think any certain oil would help it last any longer or just a good gun oil a person would normally use? Gun wax maybe? Thanks!
@BillWorden
@BillWorden 3 жыл бұрын
Heating will have no effect. I use Renaissance Wax or SprayMax 2K, both available on my website. steelfxpatinas.com Thanks, Bill

Bill, LOVE this!!! How do you think this patina wow hold up on a stainless countertop?
@BillWorden
@BillWorden 8 жыл бұрын
@Kipling...It would be fine, but I'd still recommend an Epoxy Resin Coating or a 2-Part Automotive Clear. The 2-Part Clear would be really hard to do if the counter-top was already installed, though. You'd have to live somewhere else for a few days! ;o) Bill

It would depend on how much abuse the counter-top receives. Personally, I would do an Epoxy Coating on it.

Would this work on aluminum tubes? I make Lightsabers if you see my videos and I want something like this or with stone. I've played with a few just by sanding it with 600 and then using alcohol aniline penetrating stain and it seems to come off fine. Although these were samples, I haven't done it to a hilt yet. Then I just used a clear sealer over it.

I am getting ready to do a knife. Is there any way to make sure you get more blues or is it just whatever?
@BillWorden
@BillWorden 7 жыл бұрын
@ Bob...The amount of 'blues' is controllable, by the length of time (dwell-time), that the patina is in contact with the steel and whether or not you do one application or more. Plus, you can add any of the "Blue Family" of Gels, like: FLAME F/X™ Gel or for Darker Blues, BLUE-BLACK F/X™ Gel. You're in total control of the colors produced by the patinas. If you get an area too dark, you can always 'back it off' with some #0000 Steel Wool. If you go to my site, just use the Search Bar and type in "Gel Patinas". Thanks, Bill steelfxpatinas.com

You're welcome. I forgot one thing: When using STAINLESS F/X™ and any one or more of the Gel Patinas, the STAINLESS F/X™ goes on first. Then, if needed, the Gel/s. Thanks! Bill

How often do you use those specific alloys? and "etc....",?? Which alloys are those? (just curious)...Bill oh, btw...STAINLESS F/X™ works great on all alloys tested thus far, with the exception of Al, Ti, and some extremely hard/brittle Chromium-Molybdenum alloys. thanks!

you're spraying is causing the empty spots, its pushing away the activator. try backing up and using more a fine mist than a spray

@ThirtytwoJ...Noted. However, a lot of users prefer to see some base metal (parent metal), in they're finished results. 100 Craftsment Will Yield a 100 Distinct Results with Color Case-Hardening Patinas, or any of my water-based patinas for steel. Patinas come 'free' with all the artistic expression the user desires. 😎

Do I need to top coat to protect the color? Traditional color case hardening fades with time if it is not varnished.
@BillWorden
@BillWorden 6 жыл бұрын
@ shihster88...It is advisable to top-coat. Renaissance Wax is a good option. And some folks use Cerakote or a 2-Part (catalyzed) automotive clear-coat. thanks! Bill

Hi, Bill. I need to get back in touch with you. Last time I tried a refinish of my O/U shotgun, I got some pretty good results with about three of your Pantinas and a few splatters of Copper F/X. (Remember, the gun where I accidentally polished through the case colors on one side?) But that was going on nearly three years ago and your new Stainless Steel Patina is clearly the case color holy grail (nice blues...yeah)! I'll give you a call and send some photos of my last attempt, which was pretty darn nice too. To contribute an answer the above question, I love the Galazan Case Color Lacquer for a top coat. The Galazan Case Color "Enhancement" kit is worthless (no color or "enhancement" at all), except for the included lacquer top coat bottle so it's best to just buy their lacquer stand-alone and use your products for true color enhancement, if needed or desired, on an existing color cast hardened gun (or a new never-colored gun). Being Galazan, the lacquer is kinda pricey, though. To apply, just wipe it on with a fine flat camel hair brush using only a few really quick swipes to coat the entire surface. Ya' gotta work fast for a perfectly level coat, because it dries fast, but it will dry absolutely and invisibly level and it is durable too. To remove it, I use acetone but then I clean the surface thoroughly with denature alcohol after the acetone to get rid of any oily hydrocarbons before applying your pantina. Best Regards, -Cal

WHY THANKS BILL...IM HONORED even though i was being sarcastic, will you list what you use instead of code wording "activator'?
@BillWorden
@BillWorden 7 жыл бұрын
I didn't detect sarcasm. my bad. so, you'd like me to divulge a proprietary formula? I'm afraid I can't do that. You can always review the SDS, although all of the constituents aren't listed, as they fall way under the percentage & V/V requirements set forth by the D.O.T. In other words, both of the formulae, the Surface Activator and the Patina itself, are closely guarded secrets. Sorry, can't do it. Bill

@BillWorden
@BillWorden 7 жыл бұрын
It should work just fine. I'm testing it on 440c SS tomorrow. There are a few proprietary, exotic SS alloys (mostly used by gun mfg's), that don't respond well to the STAINLESS F/X™. it works, but the colors are not as vibrant. bw
