Part of being a leader is knowing that you just may be stuck in your ways. Tunnel vision when planning causes problems. It’s always good to let new people know that their input is important. They just may see something that you missed and will never see or even think about.

Did a Cadre course at Singleton in the 1980s - Aussie SASR. Wing SerMajor - never saw him in anything but his US cams, civvy wool beanie and civvy soft sole leather shoes. Never raised his voice at all. SASR works on self discipline, if you lack this, they don't want you. There were no showy, loud, prima donnas. It was tough but I was surprised cos I enjoyed the course. Learned a lot!

Its not that unusual to have 23/24 years olds. Youngest you could possibly have is 21/22, as you have to do a minimum of 3 years service before applying.

He's building your confidence as well as evaluating you. Team building as well known. Quickest way to show your unit if you judgement is sound or do they need to teach you up. Everyone there is responsible for the lives of their mate's .

When making plans go in the reverse order of rank. This way every one is involved. If the ranking member gives his opnion the the planning session is over. You have your orders. No one is going to tell the boss we need to do something different.

Is they instantly, you're trusted, I mean if you're wrong they'd know and change your plan, but then if you're wrong but choose enough that they could carry it off, they would instantly put their lives in your hands. That's part of what that is, it's this instant bonding trusting ceremony of acceptance. Tell me what to do, be my equal, know that if your plan is close enough, your brother's and sister's arranged around you will carry it through, and anything that happens we trust you'll take responsibility for getting us through it. There's no fucking around, just instant acceptance. Good shit.

One of the factors here is that when you join the regiment, your rank is brought back down to trooper (lowest rank). One of the reasons that everyone gets a voice is because that newbie could have been a sergeant major himself before he joined, with decades of experience. Theres probably limits for which ranks/ages can enter selection, but i used a sgm as an example
