I can only imagine how Tolkien would feel watching that scene. His works were always filled with songs and poems that gave his world such a deep story a world's vast history. For him to write a song that not only was one of the greatest moments in the film, but felt like the song was ripped right out of the heart of Pippin where there wasn't a song to begin with. Masterful work. Always brings chills everytime you hear it. Tolkien would be proud.

Watching this one year later after seeing all the Hobbits extended editions and I have to wonder: How does Billy feel seeing as they used the lyrics of "Home is behind and the world ahead" as part of the script for Gandalf in Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. I'd think it'd be an incredible honor, not only to affect future movies, but also to be quoted from such an historic figure like Gandalf.

@@kevinj4204 he didn't write the lyrics. Bilbo did. Bilbo wrote it to an old tune lost to history. The hobbits sang it while on the way to Buckland. @Meyb4l9 жыл бұрын
Well... I just wanted to mention it cause most of the very popular singers wouldnt have hit a single note
@Yesica19939 жыл бұрын
Meyb4l People who can't hit a note are not singers. That's what a singer is, someone who can properly sing on key. If you have to rely on technological tricks to make you sound like you're hitting the notes properly, guess what? You're not a singer. What is sad is that this type of thing is now so common that someone like Billy who can sing is looked upon with surprise. It really does make me despair sometimes. But that's why he gives me hope. He reminds me that there ARE still people with actual, real talent in the world. It's why I love him so! (Well, in that way that you "love" someone that you don't know, and who doesn't know or care that you exist.)

Okay I just figured it out; for Tolkien, the LANGUAGE and the MUSIC IS THE MAGIC!!.... I can't believe I didn't think of this before. But think about it, how Eru Iluvatar the Creator sung the world and the Maiar and the Valar into existence... Or how a simple conversation between Legolas and Gimli can draw such emotion as to bring you to tears.... just by a greeting. Or how Saruman's magic is in his voice and the spells he can cast on people.... That is the genius of Tolkien, that is what society does not have anymore, is the magic and power of language and the love/virtue it carries between souls
