This is when the public TV form my country (Italy) still was transiting good TV shows. Clarinet is a wonderful instrument in Jazz, and your grandfather is the reason why I'm here searching for some good material on that formation back in 77-78. I think that Alvin fitted very well also in such particular music. Check Puff'n Stuff for example (not this which is On A Magic Carpet Ride)

Randy’s playing is off the chain here. Maybe I’m biased but he’s just driving the whole thing for me. Perfect perfect tone for this music and his style of playing too. So much Growl. Im sure he’s a lifelong fan of tube Amps

First off I have to give props to Mr.Billy Cobham. What a gift to the music world. He is a BEAST of a BULL on set. The band is quintessential. Have you heard Tom Coster lately? Still smashing. Billy trailblazed in his own way and this group of musicians just added the spark that created fire. Well Mr. Randy Jackson. This is what I have waited so long to see. I have heard plenty of stories of Randy Jackson playing jazz fusion, specifically with Billy. This clip proves Randy Jackson was formidable, with groove and chops to spare. He was on Billy Cobham like a bad cold. I am also into vintage instruments and that P Bass has unique character, and coming out of an Ampeg amp no less. Some of those bass runs you can actually hear in some of latter his pop work. I won't even mention his killer R & B work. Since his American Idol days I don't know how much he plays bass anymore but I will submit my vote for Randy to be placed in the same company as top fusion bassists at that time. Much RESPECT. You have to have something special as a bass player to be able to hang alongside Billy Cobham. Randy Mouton? Killing. Charlie Singleton? Of Cameo? WOW.

Clarinetist Alvin Battiste taught at Lousisana State University music department. Randy Jackson was one of his students.

I've always liked the sound of Jazz piano played on a CP-70. Its such a distinctive tone, yet also a tone despised by so many keyboardists and non-keyboardists alike because of its sharp attack and lack of perceived warmth. I always viewed it as alternate voice for pianists in the same mold as the Rhodes and Clavinet were/are. Its also interesting to watch two of the youngest players(both stage right) in Cobham's band before they went on to the next level. Charlie Singleton(guitar) would go on to become a key member of the funk group Cameo. Randy Jackson(bass) who would go on to work with numerous superstar acts including Aretha Franklin, Journey, Whitney Houston, and Mariah Carey before becoming a household name as one of the original judges for American Idol.

Saw this same lineup sans batiste in Orlando fall 1979. Incredible show still Recall walking down the middle aisle of the theatre all the way to the front of the stage during Billy’s solo. Unbelievable!
