@jspthesecond0723
@jspthesecond0723 2 жыл бұрын
@@amandaowens1008 He is generally correct on middle earth, for starters. Just to be clear I am not saying he is always wrong as he is rather knowledgeable. Nevertheless, in his IGN video on the Rings of Power he addresses "hobbits in the second age" and one of his points to rationalize this is that Tolkien wrote very little on the second age saying, "He never wrote the story of the second age, it doesn't exist in Tolkiens writings". This is false, Tolkien did in fact write about it twice, once in the Silmarillion and again in the appendices of Return of the King. He also goes onto say that Tolkien gave very little in terms of physical description of characters, even central characters. He uses Merry as an example bringing up his hair color then states it is not known but this is also false as Merry's hair was described in the Two Towers. He also gets the geography of middle earth rather incorrect when talking about the complexion of races despite Tolkien being rather explicit (Tolkien said the third age middle earth was done dramatically and not geologically or paleontologically). He also gets dwarven women having beards, he is asked in the video if it is from the books and gives an unequivocal "No". He gets by on a technicality on this because in the appendices where Rings of Power are getting source material it says they cannot be distinguished from men in looks and garb (I am paraphrasing) which infers they have beards but doesn't actually say it. However, in the book the War of the Jewels by Christopher and J.R.R. it explicitly says dwarven women have beards. That is off the top of my head. These videos explain what else he gets wrong and some stuff I covered better. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jIvGcqCaYtVqkLM kzbin.info/www/bejne/emrVe3uYYtepj9E

Corey’s Tolkien Professor podcast introduced me to Old English something like ten years ago. A couple of extra points about the Eagles… First, they would totally have been susceptible to the lure of the Ring, and they might well have taken it straight to Mordor if they didn't try to take it for themselves. Second, Sauron wasn't without aerial resources of his own before the Ring was destroyed, and even one huge Eagle would have been easy to spot and even easier to intercept. Third, those Eagles that rescued Frodo and Sam were in fact the exact same Eagles who rescued Beren and Lúthien in the First Age. In JRRT's drafts Gwaihir and Landroval get named, but Christopher edited that out for the published _Silmarillion_ as he thought it might confuse people 🤦‍♂️
@paulmercia9109

AND the eagles were susceptible from the ground as well i.e. a well placed orc arrow - especially given that at all times there were 10s of thousand of orcs on plains of Gorgoroth and no cover - or any obstacles (such as a tree canopy) to take them down.
@silverdragon710
@silverdragon710 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. I actually expected a Tolkien professor to give a better answer than just "well eagles have their own mind they don't _have_ to help". He omitted or maybe forgot to mention the imperative of the SECRECY of the whole mission. The ring has to remain hidden which is why a hobbit carries it otherwise you could ask the same question about any of the people in ME, why don't Galadriel or Elrond take it? Apparently they wouldn't make it. It had to be someone Sauron would never suspect.

@@silverdragon710 I also (assuming you don’t) don’t think this guy is that great of a Tolkien expert. I heard him review the new Amazon Prime show making the claim that there was a good chance Numenorians were brown (without any proof or reference) because Numenor was on the equator of Middle Earth ie hotter climate means darker races. However, ME was flat before and during the fall of Numenor - the “curving” taking place after the fall.

I am heading over to his KZbin channel right after I finish writing this message. Guys, today's episode reminded me of a daydream for Tolkien/Jackson I had years ago. Wouldn't it be great if Peter made one more Tolkien film, called Untold Tales. It would be a movie with two parts. The first part would be the Hobbit's adventures in the Old Forest/House of Tom Bombadil/Barrow Downs. The second part would be the tale of the Scouring of the Shire at the end of the books. It could even be animated rather than live action, and all of you Hobbit actors could be reunited. Wouldn't that be awesome? Love your podcast! Thanks for everything. Steven Seattle WA

I love this discussion. I always have wondered, though, how in-depth of a rich history did Tolkien create versus how much we, after the fact, have infused and just made to work. The history of Middle Earth seems so rich-- was Tolkien just THAT brilliant and thoroughly attentive to detail, or was he smart enough to leave gaps, to leave things ambiguous enough that folks like Corey Olsen could put more meat on the bones? Either way, Tolkien created a rare gem in literary history. Love this podcast for everything LotR and beyond. Well done, gentlemen.

It's an amazing read when you remember that.

On the subject of how quickly the ring corrupts you, based on your intent upon receiving it. I feel like Elrond knew that and answers the question of why he didn’t just kill Isildur and throw the ring into Mount Doom. Elrond was incredibly wise and likely knew had he taken the ring by murder or even force, would literally mean he succumbed to violence for the sake of the ring. And how quickly the ring got Sméagol, probably would have gotten Elrond too. He’d be walking out of that mountain with two rings of power

Can you try to get him and Colbert on at the same time? I like how the first thing he brought up is a Boromir meme. 😆😆

Regarding the Q&A: “Is Gandalf stronger than Galadriel,” I think context is really crucial to understanding it. While Gandalf is a Maiar, and while Galadriel is one of the Children of Illuvatar, both are in physical form within the bounds of Middle Earth, and therefore both subject to its limitations. Spiritually I think there can be no question that Gandalf’s spirit is immeasurably more powerful, given that he is of a higher order of Angelic beings. But on the physical plain, Galadriel is far older than Gandalf and has lived through all three ages and even seen the trees of Valinor. She’s survived countless wars with Morgoth, dragons, Balrogs, and Sauron in the past, as well as the de-flattening of the earth by the Valar. She also wields one of the 3 rings of power (but so does Gandalf). And while it is rare, there are notable cases of both Elves & Men killing Maiar (Glorfindel killed a Balrog, Hurin killed a dragon, Isildur killed Sauron, and Wormtongue killed Sauroman). Fingolfin, king of the Noldor elves, nearly kills Morgoth in single combat; and Morgoth is of an order even higher than that of the Maiar.

The late and hilarious Sir Terry Pratchett's "Unseen Academicals" takes on the EXACT Orc discussion with a great result. Oh, and its about football as well.

This was a good episode, I liked the discussion of the orcs. Interesting stuff! Makes me want to find a baby orc and raise it just to see what happens. And Olsen raised a fair point about time compression in the Amazon ROP series. It makes sense, and I’d do the same if I was in charge of that show. That’s not what makes me feel great dread about that show, though; it’s the changes made to Galadriel. Giving her a sword, armor and a caustic personality is ludicrous. She was already incredibly powerful mentally, spiritually and magically, and changing her will be problematic for the fans. (And I’m even a woman, one of the audience members that the changes were presumably made for. 😂)
