@@Hugh_Morris Also it's important to note that none of the South of Italy was ever on board with what Mussolini and the Nazis were doing from the start considering they had their sights set on exterminating them somewhere down the line as well. Mussolini actually went as far as to enact a number of laws stripping Sicilians specifically of their rights during this period as a precursor to eventually rounding them up and killing them but luckily that never came to pass. Bruno was from Abruzzo (which is culturally and ethnically considered the South in Italy), and during that period no one around there would have been considered "racially pure enough" for Mussolini's vision for Italy in the future.

Professional wrestling was put on the map by Bruno Sammartino. The man headlined Madison Square garden more times than ANYONE else in history. You don't get to headline Madison Square Garden, unless you are putting asses in the seats. And back then, it was wrestling, not shooting endless promise to fuel fueds, and pay per view events. As a kids d growing up in NYC during the 1960s I cannot overemphasize what stature Bruno Sammartino had in pro wrestling in the Northeast during the 1960s. Unlike the case with Billy Graham, there was no need to append “Superstar” to his name - he was the hands-down Elvis of pro wrestling in that era.

Superstar turned out to be correct: there is an interview out on KZbin titled (nicely lol) 'Bruno Sammartino on why he hates Vince McMahon'. Liston to it and Bruno goes through the whole story and says that Vince can start with the same money Mike Tyson got. Bruno Sammartino DIDN'T want to go into the WWE HOF because it was documented that VKM Jr owed him a significant amount of money AND due to the salacious nature of wrestling, Bruno's opinion, that the WWE was promoting for many years. HHH DID go after Bruno to go into the HOF. They ALSO went to great lengths to demonstrate that the WWE was over the attitude era and endorsing a more "family friendly" product. The "official word" was that Bruno had a change of heart about the money and the product which led to his accepting the HOF induction. This is the FIRST time I heard about Bruno getting "Mike Tyson" level money to appear at the HOF induction. Even in 2013, Mike Tyson WASN'T getting NEARLY the level of money he used to receive for appearances when he was at the Top of his career. However, whatever amount of money Bruno got, he certainly DESERVED it for what he brought to the WWE, WWF and the WWWF. Billy Graham has a long, documented history of making up stories, IF NOT outright LIEING, then changing his tune when confronted by the truth or given a few bucks. Billy is pretty BITTER about his lot in life but nobody forced him to take steroids nor to abuse other drugs and alcohol. Considering how terribly he abused his body, knee / hip replacement surgeries, liver transplant for hepatitis C, he's LUCKY to be ALIVE. It's kinda SAD because he was a good entertainer if NOT a good wrestler in the ring.

Wrestling was local more back then than it was national before hulk hogan. The tri-state metropolitan region was more popular than the Knicks, Rangers Circus, Dog Show, Track n Field.. ect....or any other even that was held in Madison Square Garden.. Sammartino held the title for several years but when lost to Ivan Kolarff created morning very close to the JFK assassination.. 20,000 people in that arena were crying and loved him like he was superman and lost to his arch rival.....Back then wrestling did have the good guy and the heel like in the Hulk Hogan era was real old school although staged of course.. Hogan was more of a celebrity than a true wrestler.. If it wasn't for Samartino and Backlund then hogan would not have ever had the opportunity to excel... Plus from learning about his true character behind the stage he was a hated person also... The WWF has lost its persona and it is just entertainment with steroids than actual wrestling ever was.. So in my opinion,, the Hogan era was the start of the downfall in comparison to its stardom.. It made more money at the time but its charisma was lost forever...

Robbie Deery Those small town local venues were great back in the 60s. Hogan helped (with McMahon backing and influence) put wrestling on the map again. Although Hogan wasn't much of a wrestler, his appearances filled seats and set the stage for what is now an athletic soap opera freak show. The McMahons, like PT Barnum share the same philosophy: There's a sucker born every minute. Unfortunately, There isn't much realism on the tube, however wrestling can be very amusing and funny. Gone are the days of the late, great, and the original "Nature Boy" Buddy Rogers, Dr. Jerry Graham, Bruno Sammartino, Ricky Starr, etc. etc. Cheers.

What I find funny is, reading post on here, as to what Superstar says that IS & ISN'T true, from people who was never there. lol Those people, are allot like me in that, all we have are OPINIONS. Speaking for myself, I don't know what IS or ISN'T true. But at least I'm smart enough to admit it. Not taking sides one way or the other. Maybe what Superstar said IS true, then again maybe NOT. But for those who post "thinking" they know, all I can say is, I hope you have the proof to back it up. But since I highly doubt you were even there, I'll take what they say, with a grain of salt. You know the old saying? Show me the money. Well there's another one. Show me your PROOF! Without it, all you have left is just an opinion. But at least I admit to as much. lol

i feel that any living legend that the WWE wants in the HOF should get a nice check from the WWE because they didnt get paided the way WWE sta r s get paid today. just my opinion.

Not sure why there's any controversy here. Neither Bruno nor WWE owe it to any of us to tell us what was paid. I never trust hearsay, but it's true- most fans wouldn't care. If Bruno got it, he got because it was worth it to WWE. Bruno in turn, can ask for anything he wants - goodness knows he worked way harder than the guys today do. IF Bruno got it , I'd say there's one obvious and very plausible reason why he wouldn't admit it: Vince insisted he not tell so that they wouldn't get held up for money, and in endless negotiations for every other guy going in the HOF. Who would want to deal with that?! It's a totally legitimate concern from WWE's perspective.

Everyone is paid min 5K to go into the WWE HOF, it might me more now but that's what it used to be. It's been confirmed by a lot of credible people that Bruno received an incredible sum of money to go in because he had been anti-WWE for decades prior to his induction. I'm sure they paid Donald Trump more than 5K as well!
