The cover to Billy's "Nylon Curtain" album reminds me of the cover to a New York Times bestseller novel.

I think I have to agree with him. I love his albums, but I always find myself wanting to listen to this one. Most of his records are basically pop rock. This one has a lot of progressive influence to it. For example, the synths on Surprises, and the way that Scandinavian Skies develops. And it's impossible to miss the Beatles tributes, but he does them very well. Great album

This is Billy's Sergeant pepper to me You have the radio-friendly hits still hitting pop radio with pressure and Allentown but the deep cuts on the are just so stellar. Especially cuts Laura with the unannounced f-bomb, and the absolutely Beatlesque Scandinavian Skies. And of course the fan-favorite Vietnam off to war goodnight Saigon.
@canadaman17867 жыл бұрын
It's intense in its depth. There might always be something new to discover on this album every time you listen to it. Hearing his point of view on the recording process just adds another layer to listen for... I heard him say once in an interview that his approach to songwriting and performing was at least partially based on defying the typical notion that to be a rock star, a person couldn't be "too good" of a musician, or "too good" at lyric writing. I'll always remember that because it's all at once respectful to the art aspect, in that he wants to put his best into what he does, and cocky at the same time...

As much as I love your stuff, and I do, Nylon Curtain is not only your greatest album in your catalog, but I have consistently placd that album in my Top 10 of all-time greatest albums. That album is up there with Captain Fantastic, Revolver, Full Moon Fever, Darkness on the Edge of Town, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Abbey Road... And for me, "Laura" is probably the coolest song I've ever heard. And believe me, The Stranger and Turnstiles run neck and neck when it comes to your second best album.

"Sgt. Pepper" is great, but for me "Revolver" is better as an album. I think that the seeds of "Sgt. Pepper" were planted on "Revolver". What made "Sgt. Pepper" work was the album cover, the concept album feel of it or the perception that it was and coming out during the "Summer of Love" in 1967. But if you strip back all of that, it's the next Beatles album after "Revolver". And I think that "Revolver" is far superior and the best Beatles album. But that's just me. :)
@charlie-obrien2 жыл бұрын
You kind of hit the nail on the head there. Sgt Pepper is more than just the album it was the entire musical, artistic and social zeitgeist of 1967. But Revolver lit the fuse that sent the whole thing off. Listen to "Tomorrow Never Knows" and tell me if that fits into 1966...I think not.

I never saw the cover as a paperback book as he mentions here. I met him late one night on an empty street in upper east side Manhattan, he was with a woman. We said hello and asked him how his thumb was, and asked when his new album was coming out. I believe it was this one. He had a really red tan from being out in the sun. I don't think he remembers meeting me lol.

*Holy crap! Billy has an awesome sense of humor, doesn't he? He mentions how 'gay' the Allentown music video is. He said the following about it (although I AM quoting him, note that I DID paraphrase part of his comments):* _"Allentown is a great song... but the music video is quite gay. I re-watched it years later & only then did I finally realize just how much of a gay music video we actually made. I say this because there are quite lot of naked men in a shower scene. As I'm watching it, I realized it's quite a gay video."_ *LMAO! 😮😂👍🏼*

Its 3/4s a great record and then it falls apart a bit near the end, gets too Beatley. It's not quite cohesive, but its ambitiousness is incredible and the highs are possibly his highest. I never realized how great Goodnight Saigon was until I heard it in that tribute video done by, I want to say, Garth Brooks? Allentown has always been an obsession, fabulous song... 'The Stranger' is the most cohesive start to finish. Nothing on it really seems unnecessary.

I am not a Billy Joel fan, but I am a fan of "The Nylon Curtain" - one of the first digital recordings in pop & a testament to what an album should be. Ironically though, I prefer the original vinyl pressing than a digital copy. Listening to my vinyl, now.

Does anyone know why he called it The Nylon Curtain?
@seanscanlon90674 жыл бұрын
It was a play on words around the Iron Curtain that divided East and West at the time but when all is said and done, it's just people behind either side who are not that different and so the nylon part was meant to symbolise the flimsiness and transparency of what kept either side apart. And then a few years after this album, Billy toured Russia.

Not his best album by any measure, but certainly ambitious, interesting, and strong work.

@LABCall Pretty much every comparison you made here was right on target except for your interpretation of "Where's the Orchestra?" ...This song is actually, imo right along with "Laura", one of the best tunes on the album. "Token Ringo vocal"??? are you kidding me? First of all, there ISN'T a "token Ringo vocal" anywhere on the album. Secondly, that assessment, imo, is not correct. If anything, that song is all Paul inspired. It's a gorgeous marriage of melody and lyrics.
@dingothing12 жыл бұрын
No question about the Beatles influence although I disagree completely with your examples! "Where's The Orchestra" doesn't sound anything like Ringo!! In fact it's the most obvious McCartney tribute on the whole album, and also the most sophisticated chord-wise.Totally opposite any Ringo-vocal type song. "Surprises" is not as much George as it's John, "Goodnight Saigon" is a mix of Paul and John. The most obvious John songs would be "Scandinavian Skies" and "Laura".

I laughed when he said, "That was the gayest video."

It's maybe because the recording process was so exhausting, the Nylon Curtain has got some classic tracks on it but they are all on side one. Side two is far less memorable. Albums like The Stranger, Glass Houses, 52nd Street and An Innocent Man are great all the way through.
