For all and every vet out there, who has endured, existed and who has returned with the burden of brethren left behind Those you fought for, no matter how screwed up the "logic", the political rhetoric and simply bullsh^t that was vomited from the mouths of politicians - I salute you ALL, with immense humbleness and complete understanding. Please guys, be at peace!

they heard the hum of our motors, they counted the rotors, and waited for us to arrive. I did that for 336 straight days behind an M60 before they sent me home. I still see the small arms fire from the LZ's, never got hit, came close, still wake up at night, some brothers didn't get home. This song haunts me.

As brilliant as Billy Joel is, and with as many great songs as he's done, this is hands down his best song. It's powerful, brilliant, tragic, and honest all at the same time. It's entirely possible to hate war and love the soldier at the same time. Remember, most of them were kids that were drafted and sent into Hell on Earth. They were sent to fight a war that they didn't start (the politicians started it) and did what they had to do. They earned every tribute they have gotten.

On a technical note: if you watch closely this looks like footage from one or more different performances (on the same tour) synced to another live audio recording (the one released on the album). It has been masterfully done but you might notice the edit avoids all but brief shots of Billy while he's singing. One tell begins at 2:55. On 'We held on to each other...' in the closer front facing shot of Billy he begins to reach out with his left hand and arm. Then it cuts to a wider side shot of him at the piano and he is not reaching out. Also, the footage looks like it was shot yesterday. Speaks volumes about shooting things on film in the 80s and 90s before hi-def was even thought of.

I was too young for the Vietnam conflict, but was involved in the first and second gulf war. The thankless disrespectful way those vets were treated is why my generation received so much love for our efforts. This song grabs me and makes me feel, as much as possible for someone not there, what the common foot soldier must have felt. It also speaks about how the Vietcong were resilient. It's also NOT preachy. It admits that maybe the US was wrong or maybe right, but in the heat of battle it matters little. This is by far the most passionate and emotional song I have ever heard from Billy Joel. AND he gave the subject the respect it was due.
