We Didn't Start the Fire has become a Boomer Anthem over the years. Starts with the events from Joel's childhood and moves into the 1980s, when the song was written. Boomers may have screwed things up - but... we didn't start the fire. It's always been burning.... right up to this very day. Instead of "Russians in Afghanistan," we have "Russians in Ukraine." And on and on and on.

I remember analyzing "We didn't start the fire" at school in my history class! Fun fact: Analyzing "The catcher in the rhy" was my class work in german. So you can see, my german and history teacher and me were (and still are) huge Billy Joel fans!!!

Check out the video that goes with the song "We Didn't Start the Fire" to see the progression thru the years. I think you are close on the meaning of the second song. History goes in cycles and everything old is new again. Like the Who in "Won't get Fooled Again" they say "meet the new boss, same as the old boss" our leaders and our history repeat themselves.

I hate Billy Joel, because a buddy of mine was listening to "small town boy" when he fell in love /w my ex-gf's best friend, and it was such a pathetic beta song. Good it's blocked in my country. @@seanscanlon9067 right, the Bronski Beat song is actually pretty good. I confused the lyrics of "downtown man" /w "small town boy" LOL. Billy Joel actually goes like "I'm simping for an uptown girl... and now she's looking for a down town simp" something like that. It's just a real beta attitude song that I hate, because my buddy was 'in love' with some stupid rich bitch and listening to the same song, and putting her on a pedestal and had this inferiority complex somehow.
