@@paulj.klosterman2809 Agreed. It's a song about trying to come to terms with the reality that your wife isn't coming back, with Christmas and everything that it evokes in terms of sentiment and memory providing an evocative backdrop/stimuli. I've always assumed that the song is autobiographical, which is suggested by someone else in these comments suggesting that the song was written in December of 1981.

One of the things I love about him as a songwriter is that he writes songs with Bridges. Not just Bridges but great Bridges. This song has one. That's an increasingly lost art in songwriting. All you get these days is Verse Chorus Verse Chorus. Great songwriters like Billy Joel Paul Simon Jimmy Webb Give You Verse Chorus Verse Chorus Bridge Verse Chorus repeat Bridge. And the reason people don't write with Bridges anymore is that it's hard. It's the Composition within the composition. You'd be hard-pressed to find a Billy Joel song that doesn't have a bridge or a C section

Gorgeous chord progression. E pedal with descending slash chords with constant tension and resolution. Subtle musician’s humor relating losing the meter with the dissonance of Asus - A going to the familiar ii V I progression on the comfort lines (relating her dependability). Absolutely love this tune. Ethereal, powerful. Pure Billy Joel.

You can see from the songs that Billy himself picked that they are staples of his concert set and that means he, himself does not tire of playing them. Not to mention that they are an eclectic group that are musically intricate and span his years of composing.
