“Turn The Lights Back On” (2024) is Billy Joel’s first solo song with lyrics in 17 years❗️ Co-authored by Joel with Freddy Wexler, Arthur Bacon and Wayne Hector, this piano ballad serves as A SELF-REFLECTION AND AN APOLOGY to his fans for his long songwriting absence. Asked why it had taken him almost two decades to bring out new material, the “Piano Man” replied : “It was fun. Music is fun. Rock n’ roll was fun. It was all about having fun - and I kind of lost that and I TURNED THE LIHGTS OFF BECAUSE IT WASN’T FUN ANYMORE. I studiously avoided it because songwriting had become painful. I HAVE THIS HIGH BAR. I said to myself, ‘If I don’t reach that bar, I beat myself up and I punch myself and I hate myself.’ So, I stopped doing it because I got tired of feeling like that.” Wearing sunglasses, the American musician performed this piece for the first time at the 2024 Grammy Awards. He also closed out the ceremony with “You May Be Right” (1980). WELCOME BACK, MR. JOEL❕ 💙🎹💜
