On this special edition of Stories with Brisco and Bradshaw, our hall of famers Gerald Brisco and John Bradshaw Layfield pay tribute to who some call the greatest catch as catch can wrestlers to ever lace up a pair of boots, Billy Robinson. They guys don't do this alone, they welcome Jake Shannon, owner of Scientific Wrestling and Billy Robinson's right hand man and the "King Of Connecticut" Matt Granahan, promoter extraordinaire!
The guys discuss the career of the legendary Billy Robinson, his impact on each of their lives and on the business of professional wrestling.

Watched Inoki vs. Robinson recently, Billy is the only guy to make being trapped in a headscissors for 5 minutes absolutely captivating. One of a kind wrestler that deserves to be remembered.

Will never forget the first time i saw Billy wrestle. It was in the mid seventies on AWA television. A Japanese wrestler named Kobayashi was tearing up the AWA at the time. Kobayashi was in the ring first. Then in comes Robbo and we all said sucks to be you Billy. As the match went on our eyes got real big and mouths were wide open. Billy won that match and the studio went wild. Fans screaming, Roger Kent, the announcer, went bonkers, and Billy made his bones that day with the fans. Was an absolute privillege to watch his work in the AWA.

My friend! We are old timers together! I watched that match also, on all-star wrestling out of Minneapolis. I think it was earlier than mid 70's but I could be wrong. The way I remember it was that Billy was this large man in the audience for several weeks. The announcer kept pointing out this large man. I think that Billy came out of the Audience to challenge Strong Kobayashi, and the crowd went wild when Billy beat him. And that was Billy's introduction to the Mpls audience. As I grew older I realized what a special match because Strong was a known shooter in his own country. There is a match on youtube of Strong beating a young, prime, mobile, Andre in a 2/3 fall match.

“A lot of wrestlers I met throughout the years fancied themselves as shooters. They were adept at demonstrating holds. `Let me show you this,’ or `Let me show you that,’ but the real test was if they could get these devastating moves or submission holds on in an actual match. Most of these guys suffered from delusions of grandeur. They couldn’t hit those moves if their lives depended on it. Billy was the exception, by far. He not only could demonstrate the move, he could hit them from anywhere.” - Jack Brisco on Billy Robinson

I feel like people always said Maivia took Robinson's eye out to try and ruin his reputation, Maivia was known for being violent when he drank and Robinson wasnt one to shy away from a fight, a Japanese journalist talked about how he spoke to George Gordienko who was there and he stated that Robinson took Maivia down and that Maivia bit his face out of desperation. Sailor Ed White DID beat down Robinson pretty bad but it was a sneak attack while Robinson was drunk, in his 40's and White left the territory the next day.

Billy told me personally that when Maivia bit him, Billy then KO'd Maivia with a suplex. That's his side of the story anyway and like I said, he told me that in person at a seminar

Billy's eye was hurt as a childhood injury. The proof is in childhood photos. Maivia had nothing to do with Robinson's eye. Here is what Robinson told me personally..... Billy said there are many sites on the internet that post dates and who won and who they defeated. Billy said that he is documented to have fought the day after the incident. Billy said that if his eye was poked out as Maivia claimed, dont you think that I would call in sick the next day? Or do you think I would go to work with a missing eye?

Billy Robinson intentionally tried to injur Khosrow Vaziri (Iron Sheik) in Verne Gagne's training camp, when he was giving his body to him. Obviously, he was not tough enough to do it in a shoot.
@theemperorcharlemagne
@theemperorcharlemagne Жыл бұрын
The story is that the Sheik was talking shit about the coaches at the camp, including Robinson and Verne Gagne. Robinson had the Sheik lay down flat on his stomach to do a freestyle wrestling drill where he would try to turn him over. Robinson couldn’t turn him over. Robinson then had the Sheik go on his hands and knees for a folkstyle drill and Robinson kneed Sheik and started slapping him for talking shit. Ric Flair recently told the story on the JRE podcast. To say that this one incident proves that Robinson wasn’t the real deal is retarded. Robinson was an amateur wrestling champion in England and Europe and beat a Bronze medalist in a freestyle match. Also he knew more submissions than anyone. He taught Josh Barnett, Kazushi Sakuraba, Kyoshi Tamura, Erik Paulson, Chris Taylor and many others.

@@theemperorcharlemagne Trying to hurt/injure someone, when they are giving their body, is a chicken-shit punk move and there is no way to justify it. If he was so tough, why did he not attempt to handle Khosrow (less than 200 lbs.) heads-up and teach him a lesson other than not to trust Billy Robinson?
@theemperorcharlemagne
@theemperorcharlemagne Жыл бұрын
@@John.Flower.Productions there is no justification for it but as Flair said, that was what the business was like in those days. Guys were like that, not just Billy. I started wrestling two years ago and I did the same drill with a national champion within my first week of wrestling. The national champion couldn’t turn me over. I was stronger than he was from that one position and we were about the same size. That was one drill. The national champion could toy with me from another position. My point is that this was obviously a terrible moment between Billy and the Sheik but this doesn’t mean that Billy wasn’t a top shooter and hooker. The man was 100% legit. Also the Sheik himself was a top level freestyle wrestler who would routinely beat heavyweights in freestyle.

@@John.Flower.Productions Sheik was bragging and got humbled, Robinson said he'd turn him and he did, he just didn't play by Sheik's rules.

@@kevthegoat8774 It is not Khosrow's rules or even wrestling rules, it is THE RULE. When someone gives their body to someone else, that person takes care of the other above their own self. Otherwise, any sort of combat training would be impossible. It is the lowest chicken-shit move that someone can pull and the fact that Billy Robinson fancied himself to be a hard man makes it even more pathetic. Satan scripted his wife having an affair with a cheap Dynamite Kid wannabe, which turned into an actual affair. They had matches together after everything was known by everyone involved but Satan never "accidently" dumped the smidget on his head because men do not hurt someone that is giving their body to them.
