That was spectacular and a helluva treat. The reason Bobby (trust me) practiced those hot licks, is because night in/out he simply can't play at that pace sustained, as Sammy Hagar said, he is the best complementary rhythm & color guitarist to ever set foot on stage. Can you think of anyone that was in Bob's shoes with a different band? Not to mention the greatest American rock band of all time. He is one of a kind (all time), but we saw a jolt of good ole Grateful Dead Weir there because String & Co are fantastic and fast, Bob was not unprepared. Brought tears to my eyes. Over 6 tours spanning 7.5 years, Mayer is a master, from the outset he followed Bob's lead, deferred to Weir, and geared his now soaring otherworldly style of play to an average speed to fly when he needs to for the Dew but crawl when Stella comes calling. It works. Imagine John and Billy on the same stage, with Chimenti and Oteill, hopefully, Bob but at his age, we can only hope. You can be damn sure Mayer saw this and was smiling!
@jaytoday102 жыл бұрын
Mayer is a douche. Difficult to listen or watch him with Dead and Co. I actually enjoy some of his own music. I saw one show each from the first two tours. But I fell asleep. After seeing the Billy and the Kids show at Red Rocks, with Strings and Tom Hamilton, I’d like to see either of those two or both in Dead and Co. They can bring an energy that Mayer doesn’t have. That Red Rocks show proves that Kreutzman can still play fast. Phil’s bands always get down too! So we know the incredibly incredibly slow tempo of Dead and Co is a Bobby thing. He was one of the most unique guitar players I’ve ever heard. But he’s a really old guy and whatever tone he’s got doing just doesn’t work. All my opinion of course.

Worth saying -- Garcia was of course Garcia, and lots of people have figured out how to do his style and quirks pretty well, on way or another (including Billy Strings). But who does Weir? Only Weir. Wow, Bob Weir has consonantly adjusted playing styles to accommodate situation . While it takes more than a few one offs to accomplish a full fruition or soundscape like most of 79 / 80 where Brent took up so much melody space Bob started doing harmonics in off time to be heard and not muddle everything. Or the Ratdog tour where Kimock sat in so Mark could heal. A way different scenario we wold see Steve off in the corner taking dead songs to completely different directions. Almost like deconstructing the music from the inside and there Bob could not be aloof or else it would have gone off the tracks so he held down the harmonies. Or going back to early experimental to where when I learn Bob songs I feel like he was trying to do more difficult music perhaps to keep up with Jerry's soul touching and sometimes technical but often just in the pocket magic. bla bla bla ... I would like to see what a whole tour with a boot camp as starters would develop into. Billy Strings approach has been a gradual and respectful hard working representative of Americana music/ I mean you can tell he loves it and doesn't feel the need to show off or try and steal any show instead jumps right in as inspiration, I don't know how long he has liked the Dead music but for preforming live it's been fun to watch him dabble to immerse in the last few years.
