to me this smacks of the sexual abuse perpetrated by the catholic priests... "put my trust in God that day, not the man who taught his way" ( a priest teaches the way of God),"footsteps down the hallway floor/ hold your breath and count to four" (the dread felt by the victims when they hear someone approaching at night), "forgive me father don't make it right" and "silent night for the rest of my life" (How abuse survivors often keep silent), and finally "devil in a midnight mass"

Ben Kowalewicz, the lead singer said the song is about John Geoghan, a catholic priest who molested over 130 in 30 years in Boston who was then murdered by an inmate while serving his prison sentence "whisper, whisper don't make a sound your bed is made, it's in the ground". The movie Spotlight actually revolves around the Geoghan case.

the lyrics sound like it was a man that abused one of the deadly sins and could never get forgiveness as he was discarded after the sin was committed as to the reason why he was vulnerable to the devil that was out to get him. he had a sin, didn't get forgiveness from someone holy or from God himself, it didn't work. he tried to get a clean slate on his own but it didn't work as to when he is standing before death or possession the lyrics state "forgive me father!" as his last words.

Cb_182 it's not a theory. The inspiration for the song was a priest that molested 100+ kids. The church knew about it and just moved the pedo priest from parish to parish.
